From Ho's in Hi Def to thumb the socceroos winning the FIFA World Cup, this 250gig beast is pretty cool.

Ok, talk me through this. My old man just got one for free for buying a big kick arse tv.

I am not a gamer, nor he. He asked me to connect it all.

What's a PS3? What's it good for? etc. Sell it to me baby!

Do you know much about the portable gamers like PSPs and Nintendo DS? My wife and I are looking to get one for him for his birthday but are baulking at the price ($178 with no games for a DS lite). Where is the best place to go for a cheap one?

PS3 can play games, videos, music and can connect to the internet for free.

I'd argue that it's primary use is a gaming console, but if your dad doesn't play games (I'm assuming this is the case) then you've just got a DVD/Music storage as well as internet capable console.

Don't waste it! I'll get AIDAN to post some stuff, he's a big user.

FIFA 10? Depends what you're looking for. FPS (shoot em up), Sports, Racing, I think they have some Age of Empires style games.

Or, you could wait until next year when they reboot the Rugby games franchise.

hmm, never really got into games. Don't have the patience. I guess sport. Perhaps I will just wait for rugby.

I haven't played games seriously for a couple of years, but my opinion is racing games is where it is at with consoles. the flagship racing title for PS is Gran Turismo so whatever the latest is is what I would look for.

im waiting til gran turismo 5 comes out to buy a ps3. its been delayed a number of times but come christmas i think its coming out, best game ever.

as for digital media, get an accessorie called play tv and it turns the ps3 into a DVR and kick arse EPG aparently. its worth getting.

playstation move is coming out soon too, meaning that the ps3 gets a wii like controller when you get an eyetoy.

It plays blu-ray. It stores music. It can access tv on demand. It also eats time with games like Fifa 2010, Rainbow Six Vegas 1 or 2, GT 5 Prologue is shite though. Grid is good for a driving game.

Most games I've got are sports games that you can easily pick up and put down not long after. I've recently bought Red Dead Redemption but have been too busy to play it, a lot of the newer games require a lot of time to really get involved.

Get sport or racing games. Ice hockey is always fun to belt people and get into fights, even with no comprehension of the rules.

Aussie D I bought a psp at the start of the year, because I had a lot of plane travel at the time, and i went to www.ecogamer.com.au and they usually have a fairly up to date list on where to get the cheapest consoles. Check this page out http://www.ecogamer.com.au/forums/action,printpage/topic,1128.0/

Cheers Cheezel, bit pissed off I missed the DSi special at KMart as it apparently was on sale for $120.

I have big problems playing rugby as a console game because I can't do everything I want to with it. I find NFL and League are much more suited to this mode of play.

I have had to cut out the amount of time I have spent playing games since having kids but am looking forward to when they can play so I can get back into it. It will steal time from you like nothing else. Played GTA Vice City for 2 days straight many years ago, only time I stopped was to eat and for toilet breaks.

The new rugby game should be much better than previous installments. The creators (HB Studios I think?) have opened a forum where you can suggest ideas and identify problems with the previous games.

They also posed an interesting question. If a new rugby game is made, would you prefer a game that has brilliant licensing and player likeness, or a gameplay that is 100% realistic?
