Kua hinga te rakau tino kaha

(The mightiest of trees has fallen).

Saw him play just the once, his testimonial at Athletic Park in 1973 & was under the stand when he walked past & into the after-match room (I was 8 so obviously not allowed into the room). Fair to say I was awe-struck.

Met him a few years back at the Dinsdale Tavern just down the road, somehow or other he was patron of a hunting &'fishing comp that was run out of the pub & he was there on the Thursday before the comp plus at prizegiving on the Sunday. He'd have been 70-odd by then but you got the feeling he could still knock over a few trees or run several miles of fence, probably before lunch.

News reports now saying he is still alive. Hopefully he pulls through and evades mention in this thread for at least another 20 years.

Have to say I'm quite partial to most of the Macs range, particularly the Gold and also Mid Vicious when a lower alcohol content is appropriate.
Stoke Gold is quite tasty as well. But I'm no connoisseur.

Sampling a MV on your recommendation (prepping a hanging for 80+, gunna be a long day & night) & while it's a bit fruitier than I normally like, it ain't half bad :)

I've been telling my Aussie mates that's there's a strong call for a return to old time justice in NZ but news of this one had previouly escaped me - getting it over in a night means that a decision for a mid-strength beer should minimise unfortunate mistakes.

Vale Ken Catchpole 76. One of the greatest Wallabies of all time, 'twas no joke when Pine Tree pulled his leg.
