Kua hinga te rakau tino kaha (The mightiest of trees has fallen). Saw him play just the once, his testimonial at Athletic Park in 1973 & was under the stand when he walked past & into the after-match room (I was 8 so obviously not allowed into the room). Fair to say I was awe-struck. Met him a few years back at the Dinsdale Tavern just down the road, somehow or other he was patron of a hunting &'fishing comp that was run out of the pub & he was there on the Thursday before the comp plus at prizegiving on the Sunday. He'd have been 70-odd by then but you got the feeling he could still knock over a few trees or run several miles of fence, probably before lunch.
