Queensland Reds v British and Irish Lions - Wed 2nd Jul 25 8pm

The Lions are coming to sunny Queensland. I remember them coming previously, in 2001 & 2013, and there were Red coloured jerseys of the Lions supporters all over Brisbane, it was an invasion of the 4 home nations out to have a good time.
I noticed in the 'Queensland Reds 2026' Discussion thread that posters were putting comments about the game next week, which was out of the context of that thread, so thought I'd start this thread early (although only a week away).
So, go for it.:)

Going to be interesting to see who is released from the Wallabies squad for this one. I don't think it'll be too many given the 8 reds named but Schmidt did suggest Faessler could be to get game time. Unfortunately Hooker is one of the stronger positions in the squad depth wise, so it doesn't move the needle as far as others would.

Beyond that, I'd think that maybe Nonggorr, Lynagh and possibly one of Daugunu or Paisami might miss the 23 against Fiji and be available, I think any of these guys could come in for at least bench roles for the Reds on shortened prep, but it does require Schmidt to make a relatively early call on his 23.

All of this working under the assumption that Schmidt will be aiming to name something close to full strength against Fiji, if he wants to go a bit more experimental it's a harder to predict whose in or out.

Someone mentioned Golsbrough is over his elbow injury, but has twinged his hammy, he was short of a gallop anyway.

No word on Aidan Ross, it was suggested earlier in the year he might be up to playing, but perhaps still been under contract and insurance etc is hindering that one.

I believe his contract was set to swap over immediately on the conclusion of super rugby - announcement of his signing has "from July":

Whether or not there's enough time for him to come over and get integrated is another story, but with our prop injuries I'd back him to slot in at least from the bench if he can get a week or so with the team. Very tight turn around though, so he might be more of a chance for the Au Nz game.

Aidan Ross joined the Reds this week:
The Australian-born loosehead prop trained on Tuesday at Ballymore alongside his new Queensland teammates and is expected to be available for selection against the Lions.

Hodgman and Toomaga-Allen both reported as fit, as well as LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) and Uru, so a decent amount of cavalry returning who missed the finals

That's some big ins on the prop side of things - could go Hodgman/Toomaga-Allen to start and Ross/Fa'agase on the bench for what would probably be our strongest prop grouping all year.

This would be the 23 for mine:

1 Hodgman
2 Faessler
3 Toomaga-Allen
4 Canham
5 Salakaia-Loto
6 Uru
7 Bryant
8 Brial
9 Thomas
10 HMP
11 Ryan
12 Paisami
13 Flook
14 Anderson
15 Campbell

16 Asiata
17 Ross
18 Fa'agase
19 Smith
20 Blyth
21 Werchon
22 Henry
23 Murray

That said you could shuffle the locks around a few different ways and I wouldn't mind, though I do think it makes some sense to favour the two who are staying.

I get where you're coming from, but all but one of Salakaia-Loto's starts this year were with Canham, so I don't think Kiss sees any issue pairing them. The exception was with Smith (in Salakaia-loto's first start) and he's also the lock I think is most likely to split up a Canham/Salakaia-Loto pairing, given he is the most capable of going 80. With 4 locks in the 23 I'm not sure that part matters too much though.

Reds looking very strong for this game it's going to be a cracker!
Hopefully go one step further than 2013 and beat the great unwashed whingers!
