but also who may be particularly well suited for it.

We might find that Luke Jones actually is a bloody good 7s player, or that Stirzaker just doesn't cut it or that CFS is sensational, etc.

It's called trialling things

Well 2010 CW is the only time we took a decent amount of 15s and we lost in the final 24-17 to NZ

This was our squad

Bernard Foley
Brian Sefanaia
James Stannard
Kimami Sitauti
Lachie Turner
Liam Gill
Luke Morahan
Nick Phipps
Nick Cummins
Pat McCabe
Pat McCutcheon
Robbie Coleman

Out of that list the only dedicated XV's players were Turner, McCabe, Morahan and Cummins, the rest of the squad were involved in the 2009-2010 IRB Sevens Season.

This was also the same squad which finished 3rd in the 2009-2010 IRB Sevens Series. 2010 CG was also the last tournament the squad player together before 9 of the squad signed super rugby contracts for 2011.

Woman's Running Qualification after Round 2 (Canada)

Host - Brazil

1st WS - New Zealand (96) Qualified
2nd WS - Canada (76)
3rd WS - Australia (76)
4th WS - USA (62)

Next two teams are France (62) and England (60)

Regional Qualifiers (Tournaments to be held 2nd half of 2015 but I will assume the they will go the way of the World Rugby Series rankings)

Africa - South Africa
Asia - China
Europe - France (Great Britain only 2 points behind)
North America - ??????????
Oceania - Fiji
South America ???????? (only South American team to have played Brazil who are already qualified)

Final Qualification tournament (assume the next best team gets this)

Lucky Bastards - Great Britain

Tournament Points

20 - Cup Champs
18 - Runners Up
16 - Third Place
14 - Fourth Place
12 - Plate Champs
10 - Plate Runners Up
8 - 7th
6 - 6th
4 - Bowl Champs
3 - Bowl Runners Up
2 - 11th
1 - 12th

Provided Australia finish higher than 6th in the next tournament they will qualify. Should happen but this is 7s and Aussie rugby.

There is a huge bun fight between USA, France and England (Great Britain) for the fourth automatic qualifying palace. If USA get it the comp will be weaker in the Olympics as only two of France, Great Britain and Russia can qualify.

Yeah I think Fiji were below par but it was still the best performance from us all season. Very clinical, error-free and physical. Where has it been..

So realistically we need to beat Samoa and PNG to qualify for the games of the XXXI Olympiad. . . does American Samoa have an Olympic committee, and do Tonga even compete in sevens anymore?

Yes, pretty much only Samoa are competitive with us but we should beat them pretty comfortably.

American Samoa have been at the last 6 Olympics & have competed on the HSBC circuit so presumably will have a crack at qualifying. Tonga haven't been on the circuit for some time now, not sure why but suspect it's money-related.

So realistically the Oceania qualifying tournament is Australia, ranked 5 & full access to their players v Samoa, ranked 10 & with well-canvassed, ongoing player-access issues, PNG & anyone else who shows up.

I think we will probably win but anything can happen in a one off game. Could also be influenced by professional XV's players. It's only been the last 2 years that we've finished ahead of them in the series. They must have a few guys that played on their superior sevens team 3-5 years ago that are now playing in European rugby but who could transition back for a one off tournament.

I reckon its great that the women's team is in front of the men's one, gives them more of a chance of being noticed and sevens has alot of development potential as a woman's sport. Would be cool if they could get a national circuit going.

Men's Running Qualification (Round 9 - England)
Host - Brazil
1st WS Fiji (164 points) - Qualified
2nd WS South Africa (154 points) - Qualified
3rd WS New Zealand (152 points) - Qualified
4th WS England (GB) (132 points) - Qualified
(Next three teams are Australia (101 points) and the USA (86))
Regional Qualifiers (Tournaments to be held 2nd half 2015 but I will assume the they will go the way of the World Rugby Series rankings)
Africa Kenya
Asia Japan
Europe France
North America USA
Oceania Australia
South America Argentina
Final Qualification tournament (assume the next best team gets this)
Lucky bastards Samoa (Final v Canada/Portugal)
Regular Tournament Series Points are
22 Cup champs
19 2nd
17 3rd
15 4th
13 Plate Champs
12 Plate RU
10 7th & 8th
8 Bowl Champs
7 Bowl RU
5 11th & 12th
3 13th
2 14th
1 15th &16th
So all eyes now turn to the qualification tournaments in November where Australia has to take on the unpredictable Samoans while making sure they don't slip up in a pool game

So after all the rigmarole, assuming the qualification tournaments go the way of the series results as @D_Box has identified above, it will be a fairly fair collection of countries at the Olympics with the only real surprise omission being Samoa or Canada, whoever loses the final Qualification tournament.

The Australian women's team has secured a position at the olympics, they've reached the top 8 in Amsterdam which means they can't be overtaken by anyone outside the top 4 of the overall rankings, thus have qualified.

Don't think JOC (James O'Connor) will get picked for the RWC after his performance last night so perhaps he might set his sights on the 7's along with Gill?
