Train Without a Station

Watching the Scotland game I recorded I was thinking about how often the stat "1st to the ruck" is discussed in regards to work rate of players. The way it is discussed though, we seem to imply that if a player isn't the first player to the ruck, they are just leaning in doing nothing.

Does anybody else think that perhaps the more measurable stat would be it considered an effective ruck if they remove an opposing player?

I just think this because if a player comes in 2nd, taking one of 2 opposition players out all day long, he would be discussed as not doing enough work, which really isn't the case and his involvement is quite necessary.

I don't disagree with you.

I think it comes down to the fact that the only statistic freely available to any of us is first to the breakdown so that is what gets discussed.
