Rugby News from unexpected places

The name of the long mooted LA MLR franchise has been reported. The LA Loyals. Not the original LA Coast group but another that emerged after that one fell through. Interestingly enough an Australian backed group.

Yes. But that still doesn't take away from the fact they had to beat Hong Kong which run a professional 7s set up to get there.

No doubt a good achievement to beat Hong Kong. I guess my premise is that it is potentially a one off for them and hard to capitalise on the opportunity.

Koreans love the Olympics, tho. A lot.

They win more medals than us these days, as well. A sevens boost could be a chance for Korean rugby to reboot.

In the amateur era they could compete with Japan and occasionally beat them. These days they're back in #3 behind HK

I saw them play a few times during my first spell in HKG. They were notable for their fierce defence. Yes, they were certainly pretty competitive (talking about XVs of course).

There is actually a few South Koreans playing pro rugby in Japan, they brought a few of these guys into the fold for the first time in a while to play this tournament specifically. One of the Japanese props at the WC is actually South Korean as well, he’d be comfortably their greatest export at the moment.

The biggest thing for them would be the money they will now get from the government to support the sport in the lead up to the Olympics. Interesting that they already have a modern rugby specific stadium that holds 5000 people, which is more than most unions have at their disposal.

Spot on mate, my brother was playing in Korea. The clubs and universities have been seeing rapid growth.

No idea where to comment on this but this will do

Really pleased to see Semi Randranda signed for Bristol and not lost to rugby (and moreso league) and even moreso moreso not lost to representing Fiji. This is big win for the game imo.

Regards, I value it.

Funny how the bot script has almost mastered first names but gets to the surname and generally rogers it up completely and gives the whole game away. And then stuffs it up with absolute transparency by failing to separate the 2 names. Welcome to the board "GeraldTax"

A hyphen or space between your names seems a bridge too far. That's like opposable thumbs in the bot world.

Ok, according to Americas Rugby News (that ones for you Kiap) Dallas and LA are set to enter MLR in 2021 taking the total number of teams to 14. There is apparently strong interest from another 4 cities to acquire teams as well. No word on who those are but it's known that Vegas which will host 5 games this season has an active bid and rumour that Mourad Boudejellal alongside billionaire investors in Christophe Lavigne and Bernard Lemaître (who just bought Toulon from Boudejellal) are part of a group looking to bring MLR to Miami.

There's also apparently moves to get something up and running in Chicago.

It has also been reported that the league will be expanding its broadcast this season with both ESPN and Fox each getting a game a week alongside CBS Sports who will still hold exclusive rights to the finals series.

It surprises me that there hasn't been any strong move for a 2nd Canadian team in Vancouver. You'd think this would be a priority for Rugby Canada - not necessarily for them to own the team but at least to work with and support interested partners/investors to make it happen.

Canada are at high risk of being left behind and could easily miss qualification for the next world cup.

There were two bids fairly early on but neither could make the jump on their own and nor could they find any middle ground. Issue now, it's a lot more expensive to acquire a licence now then it was then. So. There's still plenty of opportunity for Canadian players though. They don't count as foreign players in the US so could end up in a number of different teams. Still a 2nd Canadian team would be good.
