Someone has just posted something very interesting on Reddit regarding where the name Gilroni comes from. And if true may shed some light on at least one of the investors in the venture is. A pretty well known bloke.

Edit: So the name was Adam Gilchrist. But apparently its not him. Just someone who shares the name.

For those curious - Based off the delightful cocktail negroni. Gilchrist + Negroni = Gilgroni.

Would've been hilarious if it was our Adam.

Adam Gilchrist is the boss of F45. He is also part of the Loyal group (the new owners of the team) and they put on the Randwick v Argentina game last year. The dude is loaded.

Just found out who this Adam Gilchrist is. He's one of the guy behind F45 gyms. The same guy that was looking to invest in a Western Sydney franchise in GRR.

Anyone heard how the New South American League going? Kicked off in late Feb I think.
teams are

The teams:

Argentina: Los Ceibos (based in Córdoba - Argentina) - will be made up with mostly the Argentina XV players.
Brasil: Corinthians (based in São Paulo - Brasil)*
Chile: Selknam (based in Santiago - Chile).
Colombia: Cafeteros Pro (base unconfirmed, in Colombia)
Paraguay: Olimpia Lions (based in Asunción - Paraguay)*
Uruguay: Peñarol (based in Montevideo - Uruguay)*

* share brands with football clubs.

World Rugby will provide a rather important share of the funding in order to sustain it during the first two years.

A second Arentine franchise (still TBD) and a second Uruguayan (Nacional, the classic football rival club of Peñarol) are set to be added in 2001 too, to make it an 8-team competition.
Also teams will have 4 Island or ITM cup players from NZ, paid I think by WR (World Rugby) and NZRU

It hsn't actually kicked off yet. They've been playing trials. First games are next weekend.

Los Ceibos win their first game 48-8 over Olimpia. No real surprises in the result. They are the clear frontrunners. Hopefully, Olimpia will learn from this. As before good crowd on hand. Full stands and people lining the fence right around the ground.

In the MLR game going on the Colroado Raptors are leading Toronto 14-12 at home in Denver.

Apparently been struggling to keep up with the arms race for talent both domestically and internationally. There's been a significant influx of financial clout since they initialised the MLR movement which they seemed not to quite anticipate and have struggled to keep up. They also seem to be struggling with the fallout from this which has seen them go from the top of the tree back when they were the only semi-pro club in a amateur enviroment to a middling force in a properly professional league.

Rumours of them leaving before season 3 emerged last November but they seemed to find the funds to compete. With the pandemic in place and the 3rd season being cut short they and being funded primarily by a small municipality within greater Denver they seem to have come to the inevitable decision.

There's a lot of speculation of where they'll end up. The National Rugby Football League has popped back up in recent days. Once again stating their big plans of converting AF athletes and paying players $250k a season. Playing out of NFL/College stadiums etc. Some wonder if they're heading there but considering they don't have the finances to compete in the more modest MLR (which I should note has a lot more actual money behind than the NRFL ever has or will) they'd never be able to pay out $9m/ season in salaries.

They'll likely go back to the Pacific Rugby Premiership. Which they dominated in the past. Which would be a bit of a boon for that league. The goal should be to elevate both it, the Red River Rugby Premiership, MidWest Rugby Premiership and Atlantic Rugby Premeirship to solid semi-professionalism as a means of building a solid base of talent for MLR to draw from.

TBF, they didn't really leave - the amateur team was rebranded to Merlins (with the same bird on the logo) and they played on as the MLR started -- when the Raptors name, with other backing, went that way.

They did for a short period. Relocating to the Red River Rugby Premiership under the Merlins name.

What will be interesting is whether they'll bring forward another bid to fill the space. Los Angeles and Dallas are still due to koin next year and if they want to balance out the league they'll have to look to find a 14th team. From what I've seen that shouldn't be too much of an issue. It's just more a question of time frame for them to get up and running.
