Oh my god....are we still sticking with this pitiful two conference idea? I thought the Member unions would have gotten home, sobered up and all did the big night after story catch up.

"Did you see SA licking that strippers tits"
"Haha, yeah, that was after me and Argentina fell down the stairs at the Casino"
"Umm, by the way, did you have a look at that fucked up conference model we came up with"
"Oh my god dude, yeah. I'll call Japan and let them know now we're sober they're gonna have to come in the Aus Conference, you call Arg and let them know they're with you and we'll Rock Paper Scissors to see who has to call SA and let them know they're back to a 6 team conference"
"Whoo, that was one wild weekend, next time Japan says they're supplying the party starter I'm staying home"

Is there any news on the format of the S18.
The TV rights deal has yet to be finalised and I am hoping that common sense has prevailed and the idiotic 2.37 conference system has been aborted.

It's the same as was announced ages ago.

Aus conference of 5, NZ conference of 5, 2 South African conferences of 4 with one including the Japanese team and one including the Argentinian team.

Each team plays 6 games in their own conference, 4 matches against one of the South African conferences and 5 matches against all the teams in either the NZ or Aus conferences (so the Australian teams will play all the Kiwi teams and vice versa, while the South African teams will play one or the other).

I was initially in favour of the 3 conferences of 6 teams model as well, but the problem is the Argentinian side would be playing most of their away matches in the middle of the night in Argentina if they were in the NZ or Australian conference. Not good for building a fan base.

The structure is clearly a bridge to further expansion in Asia and Argentina. It's a little messy but once the rugby starts I think it will be okay.

I would hazard a guess that most viewers do not understand the current system too well - or, to put it another way, only care about matches that involve their own nation's teams.

So it probably does not matter how complicated the thing is, frankly. If it can bring in more bucks for Australian rugby, it is a good thing.

Otherwise it is a bad thing,

NFL has a rather confusing conference system as well, the only thing people need to know is that for a team to win the championship it needs to win the majority of its season games and all of its finals games.

And just to clarify, the structure of the competition has been agreed upon, SANZAR are just negotiating the final details with the various broadcasters.

Too confusing and stupid. I would have preferred the two conference system. Easier to relate to. Interest wanes even more.

Well there are 2 'groups' - the South African group and the Australasian Group - each of which have 2 conferences. The ARU originally wanted these groups to be closed, with the top few teams from each only meeting in the finals series. But SA and NZ knocked this proposal back.

Seriously though, when you're watching a match does the structure of the competition really affect your enjoyment of it?

I'll be quite frank, I didn't understand the format that you posted initially and have not made a second attempt to understand it. If it is even slightly too confusing, I'm not that interested. That is just me, but suspect I'm not alone.

As you say, when the matches are played, I'll can just watch them without much thought, but this is the point. I have quite a low buy in to the Super Rugby comp as a whole and am not fussed if I miss matches these days, even involving my own team. I expect it will be even less in the new comp. I hate playing our local derbies so many times a year (since we have the Currie Cup too).

The groups will never be closed for two reasons: NZ want regular competition against South African teams and South Africa don't want another version of the Currie Cup.

Given how much money for SANZAR comes from European TV these days (SA time zone), I wonder if even the ARU is right behind mixing the conferences now.

Given that whichever way the competition is organised it's going to involve a lot of travel and have a complex structure, the ARU should be going for whichever option brings the most revenue (within reason).

Well win your conference of 4 teams and your team makes the finals. Come 2nd and they have a chance (it will come down to how many log points they have compared to the team that comes 2nd in the other South African conference).

From next season the South African teams will play 7 matches against other South African teams in Super Rugby. Compared to 8 at the moment despite the fact there will be a 6th team. They'll play two other South African teams twice, the others only once.

More signings for Argentina. They're looking like a proper Test side. I get the feeling they're going to be too strong for the rest.

I think they'll be a very good chance of making finals but doubt they'll be too good for everyone. I don't think the top super rugby teams are that much weaker than the test teams. And I'm guessing the Argentinian team will rotate their players a fair bit as they'll want to give playing time to different guys in anticipation of picking their test team.

Interesting that Argentina are to become full members of SANZAR. I guess Japan will probably join at some stage too.

Argentina are looking to start an American 6 Nations next year with USA, Canada, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay, to be played in February/March. This would give more game time to their fringe players that aren't regularly playing super rugby.
