Not sure if it will draw much attention but for its worth Aus SA tour starts today with a T20 on Newlands.

I am looking forward to the Kirsten era in our cricket. The perfect man to lift us to the top level.

Feel a bit sorry for the Aus cricketers, their rugby lot havent done them any favours after sunday.

Was thinking the same thing last night. A lot of newbies in that Aus side. Like the look of the 18 year old bowler and the young spinner. Next one is on sunday and we'll have Kallis and Steyn back. There was a lot of rust out there after the off season. Graeme Smith continued to be kak.

You guys should win that one with Kallis and Steyn back, Cummins is a great prospect, hitting 150km/h at 18! Some of those bouncers were vicious.

He sure is an impressive prospect. Dunno I dont like this "mik en moer" cricket that much, the two tests is more my style.

I'm not feeling a lot of faith in this Aus side. Predicting the Saffas to wipe the floor with us

South Africa won the toss and elected to bowl first on a flat-looking SuperSport Park pitch.

South Africa are relying on a tried-and-tested combination with the returns of batsman David Miller and wicketkeeper Mark Boucher being the only changes to the squad that did duty in the World Cup.

Unlike on the sub-continent, South Africa are playing just the one specialist spinner in Johan Botha, allowing the selection of Lonwabo Tsotsobe and six specialist batsmen.

Australia, with two top-order batsmen on the injured list in Shane Watson and Shaun Marsh, have been forced to open the batting with stalwart Ricky Ponting.

They will be relying heavily on their top four of Warner, Ponting, Clarke and Hussey, while they have decided to bank on the pace of left-armer Doug Bollinger, rather than the accuracy of James Pattinson, who impressed during the Pro20s.

    Teams

South Africa - Graeme Smith, Hashim Amla (capt), Jacques Kallis, JP Duminy, Faf du Plessis, David Miller, Mark Boucher (wk), Johan Botha, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Lonwabo Tsotsobe.

Australia - David Warner, Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke (capt), Mike Hussey, Steve Smith, Brad Haddin (wk), Mitchell Marsh, Mitchell Johnson, Xavier Doherty, Doug Bollinger, Pat Cummins.

1 all in the ODI's and friday the decider. Good to see Kallis and Smith shake off the rust.

Meanwhile the SA test side and the side that will play against Aus in the warm up leading into the tests have been announced:

Castle Lager Test squad: Graeme Smith (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras, capt), AB de Villiers (Nashua Titans, vice-capt), Hashim Amla (Sunfoil Dolphins), Mark Boucher (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras), JP Duminy (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras), Paul Harris (Nashua Titans), Imran Tahir (Sunfoil Dolphins), Jacques Kallis (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras), Morne Morkel (Nashua Titans), Vernon Philander (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras), Ashwell Prince (Chevrolet Warriors), Jacques Rudolph (Nashua Titans), Dale Steyn (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras), Lonwabo Tsotsobe (Chevrolet Warriors).

    AB and Tahir back.

South Africa A squad: Alviro Petersen (bizhub Highveld Lions, capt), Farhaan Behardien (Nashua Titans), Marchant de Lange (Nashua Titans), JP Duminy (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras), Dean Elgar (Chevrolet Knights), Heino Kuhn (Nashua Titans), Pumelela Matshikwe (bizhub Highveld Lions), Ryan McLaren (Chevrolet Knights), Wayne Parnell (Chevrolet Warriors), Robin Peterson (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras), Vernon Philander (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras), Stiaan van Zyl (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras).

Some exciting youngsters. Kuhn should have been in Bouchers place in the tests. Also good to Stiaan van Zyl making his mark to the top. Played his school cricket at Boland Landbou and started off in Boland club leagues.

Paarl, how come they have named the squad so far ahead of the test series? Anyway looks like a strong squad there, I think Philander is the only one I am not familiar with.

Feels like we stole the series last time with freakish performances by Johnson and Hughes. Neithe rplayer has done an awful lot since then but both will get their chance again this time in SA. What are the early season pitches like in SA Paaarl?

I see Aus won the 50 over pyjama's overnight.

Is this thread capable of supporting consideration of Katich's attack on Clarke? In what other sport is the captain formally recognised as a selector?

Do you have an opinion on this or are you waiting to see which way the popular vote falls and plan on arguing the opposite?

Not gonna lie, I love watching Dale Steyn bowl, he is easily the best in the world.

The real cricket starts today. Love the amount of usual heat building up when this two teams meet. Bit cloudy this morning but look like we'll have play within two hours.

Newlands usually produce a slowies wicket. Saw last night it had covers on for the rain and look greenish. Maybe bounce the first two days and then ease up. Our bowlers and specially Tahir have to show some guts in this one.

Aus end the day on 214/8 and Steyn and Clarke the performance on day 1. Steyn confirm his status as the world nr1 bowler with figures of 4/31 after 14 overs with his usual hostile stuff on a typical test wicket on day 1 while Clarke show some real hard arse Aussie with his gutsy ton. Both have an important role to play on day 2. Sunny today so hopefull we'll get a interesting day 2 in the best version of cricket against two great teams.
