Force release Fava
September 12, 2008 - 10:30AM

The Western Force have released Scott Fava on compassionate grounds and the former Wallabies back-rower is now set to join NSW.

Force chief executive Greg Harris today said Fava, 32, was granted an early release after asking to move back to Sydney to be with his family.

"Scott came to us seeking an early release from his playing contract at the Western Force so that he could return to the east to be closer to his family," said Harris.

Fava, a foundation player at the Force in 2006 after leaving the Brumbies, scored the first try by the fledgling franchise against his old club.

But his two years in Perth also grabbed headlines for the wrong reasons after he was twice sanctioned for alcohol policy breaches and was also guilty of the manhandling of quokkas during a team camp at Rottnest Island late last year.

"Scott was an inaugural member of the Western Force and has made an outstanding contribution to the team with his on-field performances," Harris said.

"He will forever have his name in the club's history books as the first try scorer in our team's history."

And so Scott Fava becomes the first player to turn out for 4 states, as well as hold the rare distinction of being disciplined for "inappropriately touching" a quokka.

That seems to be a strange signing as Fava has very little to offer the 'tahs as his best days are behind him. This move most likely signifies that Hickey sees Dean Mumm as a lock as Fava wouldn't be needed otherwise are NSW are flush with quality backrowers in Palu, Mowen, Robinson, Waugh, Coridas, outside the aforementioned Mumm. Obviously the new regime isn't going to implement a 'no dickheads' policy as NTA was hinting at.

Assuming that Hickey actually picks Fava, this will make him the first player to represent each of the four states...

I'm with naza. Fava had a very poor 2008 IMO. Tries hard but the fastest he's moved in the last couple of years was chasing quokkas. Poor pick. I'd rather see Mowen move up a notch.

I would suggest that if the Tahs coach was anyone but Hickey then Fava wouldn't have been signed. Harsh?

Can't see value in it. Even at blindside, assuming Mumm plays lock, I'd prefer Robinson. Unless the Reds have signed him!!!!

Fava will be a valuable bridge for the Tahs as a back up for Palu at 8. Arguably he could be a candidate as a starter at 6, since it is odds-on that Mumm will be required to play in the 2nd row now that Vickers won't be available.

Whatever - we all know that there are injuries and they change the sense of what one has said off-season.

Let's face it: he's a valuable asset for the Tahs whatever the scenario.

At this time, September 2008, he is a canny acquisition, whatever club the new Tahs' coach, or Fava, were connected with.
