Had a quick chat to the Albury coach after their win against the Aggies, speaking more about the coming week against Griffith.
His thoughts were that Dan Rawaqa would be easier to contain if he is at 10 ??? Thoughts (un - bloody - likely)
No mention that he gets twice the amount of ball in his hand and able to play with the opposition as he wishes, running from his own try line beating 4 csu would be tacklers before offloading at the 22m line. And when he feels like something different knocks over 45m field goals!

For those that have been around a little while and might remember, keep on eye on the replacement fullback for Griffith Semesi nicknamed Wes as a young kid previously taken out the coveted John Stewart Medal in the U/17's he has lit up the field with a massive left foot step!

My tip is that Griffith will be there on August 30th against the boys in blue and will come away with it in a tight one!

Those that have been posting on the forum for a while may have noticed the note to watch him in last week's preview? ;)

It's good to see SIRU Juniors coming through the ranks and doing well at grade level.

Yeh. theres been some discussion about the inside step on the number 8, number 7, number 10 and number 15...... And also the interchanging of the 10, 12,15 at will. I think possession will be important.

Premier League

Ag College V Wagga Waratahs
Waratahs will be heading into this game as massive favourites and rightly so. Their place in the top tier is safe, so maybe even strategically resting some key players would be an idea? They will continue their winning ways & be ready for the finals in the coming weeks, where they will take on either Albury or Griffith. Ag College will again be preparing for the 2nd Div finals. Rebuilding for 2015 is under way I'm told.
Waratahs by 30

Tumut V CSU
If Tumut learn only one thing from the 2014 season, it is start to their pre-season earlier, resulting in a few more wins early in the season. They left their run too late & now CSU will play in the Premier League. CSU have been dreadful the past couple of months, as teams are easily defending their one dimensional/predictable game plan. The bulls earned high praise and respect from the waratahs from last week. One comment was; "Glad we won't have to play them again this year!" Tumut at home & a point to prove, equals a win I think.
Tumut by 10

Griffith V Albury
What a cracker this will be. Griffith I am told, basically did what they wanted against CSU last week. while Albury battled it out and toughed a good win against the Aggies. With Vunibaka & Rawaqa clicking, it could spell trouble for the steamers. Not much else I can really say, other than I can not wait & will be on the road early to get a good seat.

#SIRU2014 Round Sixteen Preview:
Ok, so this is the final competition round before the finals series kicks off at Conolly Park next weekend and there are still some important games here that will impact the final makeup of the 2014 finals series. Griffith v Albury is easily match of the round. Seru Rogo and Mick Raynes can talk this match down all they like, but ultimately the winner gets a second shake in week one of the finals – and neither of them can deny the importance of that!

Aside from the First Grade tussles, there are a number of really important games in the lower grades this weekend with a million possibilities in 3rd grade, Under 17’s has the potential to move significantly, as do the results in the Women’s division. I know I’ve harped on about it, but the 2014 competition has genuinely been very close across the entire competition which has been fantastic.

PREMIER DIVISION:
Ag College (6) v Waratahs (1)
It’s a tough ask for Aggies to go up against the competition front runners so late in the competition, but that is the task they face this week. Waratahs will be keen to work on those finer points of their game tomorrow as they prepare for the finals onslaught from Griffith, Albury and CSU over the coming weeks. I have heard good wraps on Jack Burey moving to #12 and he will need to be on his toes against a rampaging Turtle this weekend.

I would suggest that Hugh Palmer will be looking for his guys to stick to their structures this weekend and get through this game injury free. Ag College will not lie down and also have some key players who will exploit Waratahs if they are not alert for the full 80mins. Interestingly, this is the first time that Dave Armstrong and Tim Corcoran will play against their old club which should make for an interesting aside for this match. Look out for Peter Armstrong making his debut in Thirsty Thirds – will there be a cameo in First Grade?

Tumut (5) v CSU (4)
Two weeks ago, this match would have walked in as the Match of the Round, but such is the nature of the competition this year that this match is not at that level. The Bulls have slipped by the smallest of margins and CSU managed to grab a bonus point last week to seal a spot in the Premier Division finals for 2014.

Although the result will not influence the final positions, I would expect this match to be a hard fought affair, closely contested and come down to the wire. Both teams have been struck by injuries late in the season which has had an impact on their entire club but these teams will be keen to finish on a high.

Griffith (3) v Albury (2) – Match of the Round
These two teams are in for some tough footy over the coming weeks, with the winner this week getting a second bite at a Grand Final place. Griffith really appear to be “on the up” at this crucial stage of the competition but if I were coaching, I would be keeping an eye on the Steamers as well.

Griffith have plenty of attacking weapons across the park with the likes of Rawaqa, Vunibaka, Rogoyawa and others possessing good ball handling skills and an ability to play expansive rugby. What backs that up is their loose forwards ability to play wide and their tight five’s ability to support through the middle. It’s great to have the stars in the backline but you need the support players that can follow – and the Blacks have this which makes them dangerous.

The Steamers are probably playing a more conservative and structured style in comparison to the Blacks, however I believe this style suits their capabilities perfectly. They don’t have the luxury of a James Olds linking up with a Justin Wheatley this year and simply have to play to their strengths. From what I have seen, I would expect Albury to apply pressure through the set-piece and look to their lineout and mauling game within the attacking quarter to provide go-forward. If I was a gambling man, I would say that James Kora would be high on the 2014 try-scorers list and this is borne out of that set-piece pressure within the 22m zone.

Travel has to be taken into account for this match with the Steamers facing a 260km odd trip one way surely having an impact on the game. The Blacks would be pretty happy to be hosting the Steamers at the Coro Club this weekend as they travelled to fortress Murrayfield in Round 9 and went down 32-11. A lot has changed since Round 9 and both teams will be approaching this game with a different mindset, I’m tipping a great contest at the Coro Club, there’s plenty to play for this weekend for these teams!

FIRST DIVISION:
Deni v Leeton (11) – 2nd Grade Only

City (7) v Young (9)
If the Yabbies are any chance to play in the First Division Finals, they need to bag a win over the Boiled Lollies in this match (and Temora lose or draw with Cootamundra). These type of equations are always frought with danger for any club but the Yabbies just need to put their best foot forward and see what happens. They should be buoyed from their recent efforts against the Tuskers last weekend as they had plenty of chances to score points and just need to take that mindset into this match.

City have experienced a bit of a topsy turvey run in the First Division. After missing out on the Premier Division by one competition point, they have experienced a bit of a stop-start run after playing Deniliquin (at Deni mind you) in the first round of the split, they trounced Cootamundra, lost to Temora, trounced Leeton and now face a Yabbies outfit who are desperate to play in the finals. Anything can happen in these games but the ball is in City’s court and they just need to stick to their guns for this one.

Temora (8) v Coota (10)
The traditional local derby here with plenty to play for. While Cootamundra cannot make the finals, they would relish the chance to deny the Tuskers the opportunity to play finals footy. The Tuskers have the best chance to put themselves into the finals by beating the Tri-Colours and it’s as simple as that.

Temora played an expansive game against the Yabbies last week and would be keen to try the same tactics this weekend. Cootamundra’s ability to defuse this type of attacking structure will hinge on the availability of Alex Hardie and Bob Scott who really organise their attack and defence.

Let's see - He may well indeed be back for the Grand Final but he mightn't have a team to play for in the Grand Final.
My Forecast - Waratahs lose week 1 & the defending premiers (The Steamers) knock them out at Albury in Week 2 - Go Those Black Men

1st Grade- Wagga Waratahs v Griffith
In the forwards, Waratahs have the slightest of edges, however the backline of the Blacks will be too strong the Waratahs.
TIP - Griffith by 5
1st Grade- Albury v CSU
Albury will dominate in every facet of this game. They will be warming up for week 2 of the finals.
TIP - Albury by 15+
1st Grade- Wagga City v Temora
Wagga City should just sneak home with the points in this game, but Temora are Romano's Cup specialists. Could be a real cracker.
TIP - City by 3
1st Grade- Wagga Ag College v Tumut
Tumut will be far too strong in this one.
TIP - Tumut by 20+

#SIRU2014 Finals Week One Preview:
This is where things really start to heat up now for the finals series; it’s going to be a loooong day of rugby up at Conolly this weekend but it looks like it’s going to be a clear day which should set the platform for some exciting games.
I’ve only got time to preview the First Grade games, but have been able to watch a few of the lower grade games over the past couple of weeks and have been quite impressed with the talent running around in some of those lower grades in recent weeks.
From First Grade, through to Women’s, there are plenty of great games across the day tomorrow, if you’re keen to see a deadest smorgasbord of rugby, get yourself down to either Conolly Park or Beres Ellwood Oval tomorrow to see the cream of the 2014 crop running around.

PREMIER DIVISION:
FIRST GRADE
:

Major Final: Waratahs (1) v Griffith (2) – Ref: P Dean Kick Off: 2:15pm – Conolly Park #1
From what I have seen in recent weeks, this game should be a corker! Griffith are looming dangerously on their counterparts and both teams will be keen to have next week off.

I would suggest a high scoring affair will be on display here and that the team who can defend well should be able to control the game. Both Waratahs and Griffith can score points and both have similar defensive records this year.
Waratahs will be sweating on Jake Eaglesham’s ability to recover from an ankle complaint suffered as a result of their recent mystery bus tour. Eaglesham has been a key for Waratahs this year with strong ball carries and solid defence really adding some starch to the Waratahs pack.

Griffith will be looking for Marika Vunibaka and Dan Rawaqa to take them forward through the middle and have speed to burn out wide through Semisi Rogoyawa chiming in from fullback. Daniel Dowson in the forwards needs to lead the “Eight Horses” around the paddock and if the Blacks can tighten up that mid-field area through their tight five, they have the ability to control the game.
Although both teams play an attacking brand of rugby, defence will be a key for this match. Waratahs will want their set-piece to fire while the Blacks will be keen to throw the pill around a bit and see what cracks open up.

Players to watch: Steve Tracey and Semisi Rogoyawa at #15 (particularly on the kick-return), Daniel Dowson (#5) and Jake Eaglesham (#8) and obviously the two Fijian ex-internationals!

Minor Final: Albury (3) v CSU (4) – Ref: S Donelan Kick Off: 4:00pm – Conolly Park #1
Mick Wakeling was quoted in the paper earlier in the week saying that Reddies need to stop Richard Manion; it would be easy to argue that the same could be said for Paul Hood! These two experienced 5/8’s are surely going to have plenty of influence on this game.

I said a few weeks ago that these two teams play different styles and this will definitely be the case this weekend. CSU are happy to play that “ad lib” style footy while the Steamers look more towards that traditional set-piece, continuous phase type rugby.
There has been plenty of talk this year about Reddies scrum woes and recent injuries will no doubt have compounded this type of talk. Aside from the scrum, the Reddies forwards mobility is actually one of their strengths and they support their ad lib style pretty well.

Both teams have been here before and know how to sniff out a victory when it matters. I don’t believe that there is much to take out of the season as these two teams are one a piece coming into this match and both have enough experience in their ranks to know that the regular season counts for nought when it comes to these elimination finals.
Players to watch: Richard Manion & Paul Hood at #10, Sterling Ross and Nathan Bright at #8, I would also be keeping an eye on the outside backs for both teams this weekend.

Second Grade:
I’ve seen a few 2nd grade games in recent weeks and from what I’ve seen, consistency is going to be important for all teams in the finals this weekend. Waratahs v CSU will be a classy affair and is almost a traditional hitout come finals time. Griffith will be made to work by a much improved Tumut outfit in that game also.
Major Final: Waratahs (1) v CSU (2) – Ref: M Del Gigante Kick Off: 11:15am – Conolly Park #1

Minor Final: Griffith (3) v Tumut (4) – Ref: H Hicks Kick Off: 12:45pm – Conolly Park #1

FIRST DIVISION:
First Grade:
Major Final: City (7) v Temora (8) – Ref: M Ryan Kick Off: 2:00pm – Conolly Park #2
Wagga City have been impressive since the split but have their work cut out for themselves against a Temora outfit that are defending their 2013 First Division Premiership – and they’re not keen to let it go easily!

Wagga City have a point to prove after narrowly missing out on the Premier Division by one lousy competition point earlier in the season. Since that time they have been chugging along nicely in the First Division but are now at a point where they need to play that cut-throat style of rugby.
Similar to City, the Tuskers are out to prove a point to the competition. After the way they finished off 2013, they had their sights set on the Premier Division but were not able to get the start they needed for that goal. This is their opportunity to show that they can mix it with the bigger towns when it comes to the crunch.

In terms of style, Wagga City have a large forward pack who will want to impose their authority on the game around the set piece and breakdown whereas the Tuskers will probably look for more of that recycling type of game revolving around strong runners around that #9 and #10 channel.
Players to watch: James Curgenven (#10) and Justin Sheridan (#8) for Wagga City and Niko Degei (#8) and Rafa Niumataiwalu (#9) for the Tuskers.

Minor Final: Tumut (5) v Ag College (6) – Ref: M Lotz Kick Off: 3:45pm – Conolly Park #2
Both these teams have not had the greatest few weeks in the Premier Division but have the chance to compete for a First Division finals place this weekend.

Tumut will be buoyed by their efforts in 2014 and have probably found that the key to a more successful season could lie in a longer pre-season; they have shown improved fitness and skills around the park and have no doubt been happy with their backs this year.
Aggies have been finding some rhythm in their game in recent weeks with the move of Jack Burey to #12 and Johnny Malone to #9 giving them a more dynamic approach to their starter plays. The Bulls will be looking to the likes of Tim Graham to lead their experienced forward pack throughout this game.

Players to watch: John Malone (#9) and Tanian Naude (#7) for Aggies and Christino Manuelevo (#10) and Scott Gibson (#12)

Second Grade:
I haven’t caught many of these teams recently, but Ag College were doing well against Waratahs last week and Young have found some depth in their club in 2014. City have quite a handy 2nd grade outfit and the Steamers 2nd grade will need to dig deep this weekend.

Major Final: City (7) v Young (8) – Ref: L Gunn Kick Off: 12:30pm – Conolly Park #2

Minor Final: Ag College (5) v Albury (6) – Ref: M Harris Kick Off: 1:00pm – Conolly Park #3
3rd Grade:
The 3rd grade competition throws up some interesting scenarios which is evidenced by the fact that there is a top 8 finals series in 2014. Junee and Aggies are yet to play each other in the regular season which is just one of the peculiarities of the 3rd grade draw. All clubs have plenty to play for as it’s sudden death for all teams this weekend, the Ag v CSU hitout will have plenty of feeling, Junee v Young should be a great game as will Hay v City while Tumut and Waratahs will be a clash of the old school vs the new school.
Qualifying Final: Junee (1) v Young (8) – Ref: C Van Dyk Kick Off: 11:00am – Conolly Park #2
Qualifying Final: Ag College (2) v CSU (7) – Ref: P Charker Kick Off: 2:30pm – Conolly Park #3
Qualifying Final: Hay (3) v City (6) – Ref: A Gunn Kick Off: 11:30am – Conolly Park #3
Qualifying Final: Tumut (4) v Waratahs (5) – Ref: G Trope Kick Off: 10:15am – Conolly Park #1

Under 17’s:
I haven’t seen very many Under 17’s games at all this year but from what I hear, the new format has helped clubs bolster their numbers and it’s great to see clubs like Temora going from strength to strength and also the Young Yabbies reaping the rewards from their juniors programs. These two clubs both work hard amongst their junior clubs and deserve to be playing during the finals.

Qualifying Final: Young (3) v Temora(4) – Ref: J Martel Kick Off: 10:00am – Conolly Park #2
Women’s:
The women’s competition has been a highlight of the 2014 competition and tomorrow should be another great day of sevens rugby. Ag College were lucky enough to bag the services of some handy players last week but need to stick to the team game plan tomorrow. Temora have been playing some good rugby in recent weeks but have their work cut out for themselves against a handy City outfit. Griffith have slipped a little from 2013 but will no doubt approach the finals with vigour; Leeton have been the stars of the Women’s Competition in 2014 but are up against a CSU team that has great support within the club.
Qualifying Final: Wagga City (3) v Temora (4) – Ref: M Dwyer Kick Off: 10:00am – Beres Elwood Oval
Qualifying Final: Griffith (2) v Ag College (5) – Ref: M Dwyer Kick Off: 10:45am – Beres Elwood Oval
Qualifying Final: Leeton (1) v CSU (6) – Ref: M Dwyer Kick Off: 11:30am – Beres Elwood Oval

I predict a fair bit of soul searching over the next few weeks (last night especially) and into the off season for those who call the University home.
Both clubs were very ordinary for large parts of the season & were both comprehensively belted yesterday. Not a good look, as the University is traditionally a rugby stronghold.
Their respective exits yesterday were very undignified, to say the least.

Aggies looked lethargic & rudderless without any sign of leadership. They have been very poor the last couple of years resulting in Romano's Cup, rather than the Walsh & Blair Cup appearances. The answer to their problems is probably not an immediate fix, but it should begin with a new coaching set up. From many reports the current set up is as dysfunctional as it gets, with one of the "co coaches" likely to move to the "boys in blue" for 2015. I'd be moving mountains to install Pete Armstrong as coach in 2015, with the likely benefits being players returning and a more disciplined, structured and mature approach. Off the top of my head, I reckon there would be 6 or 7 first graders return next year if this was the case.

From memory, CSU were beaten by a point or two in the preliminary final in 2013 & were regarded by all as the only genuine threat to the 2013 Albury juggernaut. In 2014, with essentially the same squad (minus a few I admit) + a few imports from the Pacific and the Mungoes they were "embarrassed" by Albury in the Minor Semi Final to the tune of 62-10. Their early season form was described to me as a "mirage" & this turned out to be an honest assessment, as when they needed to play good sides regularly, they were dismal. Their game plan was easily countered in the second half of the season, resulting in yesterday's effort. They looked like "lambs among the wolves" yesterday. (I wanted to use the "Lambs" analogy with aggies, but they weren't as bad!)
I don't want to suggest how to or what their fix is, as I am told they don't think there are major problems!!

At least their 2nd Grade teams are still alive!

Think your views are a bit misguided, thought the aggies as a club really stood up on Saturday.
Completely written off and got up in 3 out of 4 grades, even womens perhaps the biggest upset of the day.
Lethargic and rudderless??? They scored 4 tries in the first half and looked like a team possessed.
As for a 1st grade coach 2015, that's just about all sorted with a bloke from the John I Dent Cup.
