I think the reporting of stats has gone way over the top. This is getting ridculous. Broadcasters must employ hundreds of people just to troll records books.

Cricinfo Statsguru is just so good that people can come up with amazing stats with relatively little effort.

The professionals such as Ric Finlay have to work doubly hard to come up with obscure ones now.

Yes, it's a bit of harmless fun and yes, i read most of it but don't know why!

For example, take the 50/60 club, 50 tests and averaging 60. Who had ever heard of it before Smith was due to enter it? Anybody? Pretty sure someone noticed that and made it up on the spot.

Time for both Marshes to be pensioned off, and for Warner to cop a kick in the bum. David doesn't seem to understand the need for patience in India.

How surprising, the alleged sub-continental specialist is dismissed for 2. He's had his one good score for the series.

What a day! Superb again from the captain and what a time for Glenn Maxwell to produce. His concentration was very impressive for someone renowned for the opposite.

First session tomorrow will be crucial. If these two can go on with it, it will really put us in the box seat. A couple of early wickets and we could be dismissed for under 400 and the game will be wide open.

What a first day for Australia, we are well and truly on top. Wicket looks a lot more consistent than the previous two tests and really not much spin to speak of just yet.

Must admit there were a fair few posters around here (myself included) who had the knives sharpened ready for Maxwell to fail this test. He was superb today and deserves a hell of a lot of credit for the position we are in now.

Also, surely Steve Smith has now silenced any conversation about who is the #1 test batsman in the world. The guy is in his own stratosphere, what a player.

Thoroughly unimpressed by Warner and SMarsh. Handscomb is having a pretty lean series by his lofty standards, his average after this series will probably be more reflective of his ability than it was after the Pakistan series.

Those few negatives aside, young Matt Renshaw has been brilliant and very little to complain about as an Aussie fan after day 1.

Maxwell's innings is the highest score by an Australian number six since Steve Smith scored 100 in 2014 in South Africa batting six.

Fantastic performance from the boys yesterday, real application in a situation when it could have gone pear shaped. They really need to push on in the first session today and put together a massive score. We're going to need 500+ I think.

But great work by Maxi in particular to shut me up about his batting ability.

You weren't the only one! I had a bit of time to kill at work so took the opportunity to bring up a few of the things (in relation to test cricket) said about Maxwell in recent times on this thread. Pretty chuffed about my prediction in November last year :D no idea why I changed my mind in recent times!

November 2016:
I'd go with:
S.Marsh, Warner, Khawaja, Smith, Lehmann, Maxwell/Ferguson/Lynn, Handscomb, O'Keefe

December 2016:
For the remainder of the series maybe the 4 pace bowlers are enough. The other option could be to throw caution to the wind and pick Maxwell or Head at 6 and see if they can fill the all-rounder role.

January 2017:
We know what to expect and having guys with proven success in India could make a big difference. I'd be far more comfortable with Lynn or Maxwell than I would with Agar or Head.
I'd rule a permanent line through Maxwell as he strikes me as a narcissistic egotist who puts himself before the team.
Of the two 'all-rounders' who can bowl spin I think we're more likely to see Maxwell than Agar in the starting XI. How Head missed out I'm not sure.
I'd like to see for Pune: Warner, Renshaw, S Marsh, Smith, Handscomb, Maxwell, Wade, Starc, SOK, Hazlewood, Swepson/Lyon
I do see Maxwell as an option at 6 in India if we go down the route of only picking one specialist spinner. That wouldn't be my first preference though.

March 2017
Moving on to the third test I think we should bring in Khawaja at 6. I don't see Maxwell as the solution to our problems....
The obvious change to me seems Khawaja for Mitch Marsh. After that you would be looking to bring Maxwell in but I wouldn't be doing that yet.

Pattinson 1/43 and 5/7 in Victoria's innings win v Queensland along with a nice little 20 run cameo to see the Vic's guarantee a "home" (Alice Springs is my favourite part of Victoria) final.

Good stuff for the fast bowling stocks.
