Good thing the Sefrikans are missing their top batsman and top bowler for this match, otherwise the complete disaster this test is shaping up to be would be a total catastrophe of near biblical proportions.

Are there any 1/2 decent club cricketers about that will be in near vicinity to Melbourne on 26 December? Could they do any worse than our top and middle order?

Previous lowest completed innings for Australia v South Africa was 111 at SCG in 1993/94. Lowest completed first innings 198 at MCG in 1931/32.

Philander back on the field so no lasting damage from his collision with Smith who has over half your runs and now has a Test average of a touch over 58.

EDIT: all out for 85, Smith left 48* & possibly thinking he shouldn't have taken the last-ball single to leave Lyon on strike to Philander who finished with 5/21.

Maybe the reality check Australian cricket needs. Our batsman simply can't play swing or spin and we have India and England on the horizon.

This is not a new revelation, but we can only hope the lost ticket sales and TV viewers might force curators and administrators to sort this shit out.

He's doing an OK job so far, he's just got his third.

Light, I think you're on the money that this might be rock bottom for our blokes. This complete ineptitude with the bat has to be addressed.

Watch for SA to put 500+ on us. Also ban all test players from playing in any limited over formats during the test season. I can see England sweeping us 5-0 in the ashes next year if we continue like this. Realistically, we should be ranked 7th in the world

Well 4/76 isn't too bad. Their lower order will struggle more than in Perth. Really lucky Starc and Hazlewood are quality.

Doesn't excuse the terrible batting and it must now be time for Voges to go. Pick Maddison or Bancroft and stick with them for the rest of the summer. Warner has been hilly of twice misreading the state of the game and not playing in a fashion the team requires. The play your natural game at all times is a ridiculous policy.

Credit must go to South Africa for their fielding so far, it's been nothing short of superb.

Anything over 150 ahead and they've got this test. That said, batting last on this pitch would* be a nightmare.

* if we had a wicket-taking spin option.

Well trailing by 120 still I am not so optimistic. Even if we manage another 250 it leaves SA with a straight forward run chase.

de Kock and Bavuma did very well and really took it away from us.

Only scored 40 more runs. Lost 8 wickets. RSA win by an innings & 80 runs.

Fucking weak. I don't recall an Aussie team so lacking in fight and technique, not even in at our nadir in the 80's. At least that team had young blokes trying their guts out. This current lot have more talent but less heart IMHO.

Pat Howard first on the chopping block. Don't replace him, it is a useless position.

Lehmann turned things around after the Arthur years but it might be time for a new man at the top. His laconic way was perfect then but it might be time for a Langer or Gillespie. He will probably see the summer out but given his son is looking extremely good he might want to make way anyway.

The players! Where to start? Obvious confidence issues at the moment. It really is only the batsmen that need work. Smith, Warner and Khwaja are the only 3 that are of international class. Be tough to dump Ferguson but Voges is done, ugly dismissal. Burns might be safe due to Bancrofts slow start.

Really hard to see where the next win will come with the world #1 test side up after this. They will struggle more with the different pitch so how long they spend here acclimatising and playing before the first test could be very important.
