Media watch had a look at this 2 weeks ago, check it out.

And found that 9 have actually been complying with this new code since March 21. Tom Waterhouse has still been all over Friday Night Footy hasn't he? Some change!

excerpt:

The commercial free-to-air channels have been working on a new code of practice covering the promotion of gambling odds. It’s not yet been formally introduced, but in a submission to the parliamentary committee, their lobby group, Free TV, wrote that: "There will be a number of new restrictions on the promotion of live odds, including ... a ban on live odds promotions by commentators (including guests) directly before, during and after a sporting event."

.....

In fact, according to Nine, it began complying with the new draft code on Thursday March the 21st. Yet on Friday Night footy the next night, Tom Waterhouse was still everywhere. Before the game... And at half time.. And at the end of the game, Tom was back to talk about the weekend fixtures...
.....

But, I hear you ask, what about that : "... ban on live odds promotions by commentators (including guests) directly before, during and after a sporting event. "

Well, the full text of the draft code hasn’t yet been released. But it contains a cynical little wrinkle. Nine’s Scott Briggs tells Media Watchthat according to the draft code... "‘Commentator’ means a person who is a host, guest or otherwise participating in a Live Sporting Event ... It does not include discrete and distinguishable contributors, including clearly identified representatives of gambling organisations. "

.....

So, believe it or not, this is complying with the new code.....

Free TV told the committee that its new code “will shortly be the subject of public consultation” – though it’s declined to tell Media Watch how shortly. But here’s my comment anyway. If what Nine is doing now will comply with the code, then it won’t be worth the paper it’s going to be written on.
