"PREMIER" CLUBS IN SYDNEY 1865 to 1873
(prior to the establishment of the Southern Rugby Football Union in 1874)

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a list of the most "successful" clubs for each year (from 1865 to 1873) prior to the establishment of a formal Rugby Union (Southern Rugby Football Union) in 1874.It is taken from Thomas Hickie's book "A Sense of Union: History of the Sydney University Football Club" (Appendix 49). The year 1865 is referred to as the "first recorded year" of rugby in Sydney (i.e. there were reports of games and results in the press from that year).
    • This is not a list of competition winners as there was no competition in place at the time.

All credit for the historical research must go to @Red Son.

There is plenty more to come. I will fill in the gaps when I get time from @Red Sun's archive.

It would be nice if some knowledgeable folks were able to assist to publish this information on Wikipedia. It is too good to be buried on a forum.

Anyone able to help? Send me a convo if you are fluent in wikipedia editing and are able to help.

    1898 Pirates, Sydney
    1899 Wallaroo, Randwick

    * In 1894, Wallaroo and Randwick finished equal first in points on the premiership table (after finals had been played). The NSWRU decided to award the premiership to Wallaroo because of their better scoring differential. So "officially" Wallaroo are the premiers, but listings of past premiers always show Randwick as premiers for 1894. Randwick had won the two finals played against Wallaroo.

Note: Tom Hickey (in his book "A Sense of Union. The History of the Sydney University Football Club" 1998) has a list of club premiers (Appendix 49 page 351) which differs (for the years 1874, 1875, 1877, 1878) from the lists published in the newspapers. Jack Pollard (in "Australian Rugby Union - The Game and the Players" 1984 - page 86) has the accepted list as used by the newspapers.

The “District Scheme” was introduced in 1900.

    DISTRICT SCHEME / PREMIER RUGBY

SYDNEY FIRST GRADE PREMIERS from 1900

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The competition was run by :
Metropolitan Rugby Union (MRU) 1900- 1914
    NSW Rugby Union (NSWRU) 1919-1965, 1987-1988, 1992-2010
    Sydney Rugby Union (SRU) 1966-1986, 1989-1991, 2011-

There was no official competition between 1915-1918 during World War I.

In 1987 & 1988, the ten teams from the then Sydney Rugby Union First Division left the SRU and ran a separate competition ("NSW Championship") through the NSWRU. The SRU continued with a "SRU Premiership" competition with the remaining Second and Third Division teams.

SECOND GRADE & RESERVE GRADE RUGBY in SYDNEY

When the "District scheme" was introduced in Sydney in 1900, a Second Grade competition was also established for the second XVs of the "district" clubs.

Over the years, Second Grade started to include teams from clubs that were not in First Grade (i.e. so-called "non-district" clubs).

In 1921, the competition was split. With a new division ("Reserve Grade") set-up for the second XV teams of the First Grade clubs. The other ("non-district") clubs continued playing in "Second Grade".

For the first two years (1921 & 1922) these two competitions ran separately. Manly won the Reserve Grade in both years and Randwick (1921) and YMCA (1922) won the Second Grade. Randwick was not a "district" club at that time.

In 1923, the two competitions were still separate, but a final was introduced between the winners of the two divisions to decide the overall Second Grade premier. This continued from 1923 to 1927. The reserve grade teams were placed in the "A" Division of Second Grade and the non-district clubs were in the "B" Division of Second Grade.

The Kentwell Cup was introduced and awarded to the winner of the "B" Division from 1923.

The Bruce Grahame Memorial Shield was planned as the trophy for the winner of the final between the two divisional winners. It was presented for this purpose for the first (and only) time in 1927 to Mosman (of "B" Division) who beat Western Suburbs ("A" Division) 11-9.

After 1927, there were no further Second Grade inter-divisional finals played. Although the Bruce Grahame Shield and the Kentwell Cup were both presented to Manly Life Savers as winners of the Second Grade in 1928.

Of the five finals held between 1923 and 1927, the "B" Division teams won four (one on forfeit).

From 1928, Reserve Grade (formerly "A" Division of Second Grade) permanently became its own competition (continuing to this day) with the Caird Shield presented to the winner.

In 1929, "Second Grade" became the "Non-District" competition and in 1930 was renamed the "Sub-District" competition. The Kentwell Cup and the Bruce Grahame Shield continued famously as "Subbies" First Division trophies for First Grade and Club Champions respectively.
