OK, crunch game of he season is coming up with both sides looking less than in prime from.

The Tahs have a dominant tight five, but so do the Brumbies.

Both set of backs have talent but lack any cohesion.

I see another grinding tough match coming up.

And now Palu is wounded ....................................... our only go forward guy.

Palu a broken man, but could still front up against Brumbies

Rupert Guinness | March 9, 2009

THE unbeaten Waratahs are sweating on the availability of No.8 Wycliff Palu for their round-five clash with the Brumbies.

A scan on the powerhouse forward's hand confirmed a fracture, but he will see a specialist tomorrow before his playing prospects for Friday's game in Canberra are decided.

Palu injured his hand in the Waratahs' 15-11 win over the Queensland Reds at the Sydney Football Stadium on Friday night.

The Waratahs are cautiously optimistic he will play against the Brumbies, but coach Chris Hickey yesterday said he could be out for up to four weeks.

"There is a bit of a crack there," he said. "We will know more by [tomorrow] or Wednesday morning of where he is going to be at.

"We are still hopeful he will be fine. Worst-case scenario, [he'll be out for] three to four weeks."

If Palu is sidelined, the Waratahs will call on either Ben Mowen, who has been starting at No.6, or new recruit Luke Doherty to cover the No.8 slot.

Scott Fava would have been another option, but he is still a fortnight away from being fit to play after suffering a bulging disc in his lower back.

Hickey is satisfied that NSW have enough depth and versatility with Mowen and Doherty, who has played two Junior Waratahs games since returning to Australia from Japan.

The two other fitness concerns are minor. Prop Al Baxter has a calf strain and will be monitored in training this week. Hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau suffered a head knock against the Reds, but he is expected to play.

Hickey believes the Brumbies' 25-16 round-three loss to the Western Force before their bye on the weekend was an aberration rather than the start of a decline.

"They won those couple of close games," he said of the Brumbies' 33-31 win over the Highlanders in Dunedin and 18-16 round-two win against the Crusaders at home.

"They certainly can play for the 80 minutes. I know they would have been disappointed with their performance against the Force. Sometimes it is hard to explain why a team doesn't turn up on the day. That was probably a little bit the case in that particular game."

Brumbies coach Andy Friend could make a few changes from the side that lost to the Force. Some suggest 18 year-old Matt To'omua might replace Christian Lealiifano at No.10.

If Lealiifano, 21, plays, Hickey believes he will avenge his poor game versus the Force.

"I would be surprised if, after a performance that he would have been disappointed in, that he doesn't come back strongly," he said.

Definitely worried about this one. If the tahs win it'll be close and will most likely occur though a lucky try of some sort. I can't see Palu making the game, so I'm guessing Fava will play. :'(

Tahs by 4?...... Maybe.....

Fava is out injured - bulging disk.

Doherty would probably be called in to start, unless they want to put Robinson at blindside.

Brumbies pack will be dominated in the tight, as were the Reds. If Lealiifano plays and the Tahs backline tactics stay the same from the Reds, then the backline contest between the two could descend into a laughable boring farce of epic proportions.

Selection-wise for the Tahs, the biggest joke would be if Naza's love child Carter is picked again at 12, after showing that he can tackle and do absolutely nothing else for the past two games. And that includes getting over the advantage line, or even coming close to bothering Barnes in defence.

I would like to see Horne at 12 and someone at 13, I guess Tahu or Carraro

What about Hangers at 12 and Horne at 13?

With Morty and AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) charging at Hangers and Beale from the get-go (providing Lealifano isn't kicking the ball out on the full everytime he gets it). Having said that, I wouldn't mind seeing that combo given a go, what's Hangers' defence like?

No shoulders. Can we stop talking about Hangers, please? This is a crisis meeting not a fire sale.

Sums up the Tahs season so far really.

I'm thinking Waugh to 8 with Robinson on the side. Robinson will lack game time and conditioning tho and will need to be subbed early. Can Doherty fill in at 8? With Dennis remaining on the bench to cover injury.

Oddly enough, it was in the Brumbies trial match that the Tahs backline last showed some flair. A trial game admittedly, but the Tahu/Horne combo worked well on the night. Also, Beale's hospital pass ratio was pretty low on the occasion, although he's obviously been working on that part of his game extensively since then, where its now travelling about 1.2:1.

I always though Doherty was a pretty good player. He and Mowan would do me and give us a decent 3rd lineout option.

Yah except I'm talking Tahs/Force 2008 luck, this year has been taking the limited chances.

The Tahs the only Aus side that give me rewards with the tipping. The Brumbies and Force totally wrong week after week after week. Will Mortlock plays? He make a huge diference to the Show Ponies.

Polota-Nau, Palu give Hickey a headache

Greg Growden Chief Rugby Correspondent | March 10, 2009

WHILE the Brumbies are about to radically transform their back line, the Waratahs are relying on positive results from two medical tests to ensure they have a functional pack when they meet in Canberra on Friday night.

Waratahs and Test No.8 Wycliff Palu is in serious doubt with a fractured hand and a visit to a specialist today will determine whether he is allowed to play. And hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau will undergo a neurological test tomorrow after NSW coach Chris Hickey yesterday confirmed the Wallabies rake suffered concussion when he ran into the hip of Queensland Reds second-rower Van Humphries early in the second half of Friday night's interstate victory.

Following the collision, Polota-Nau was spread-eagled on the ground for some time and was extremely groggy until he was replaced. However, Hickey believes Polota-Nau will play in Canberra. When asked if Polota-Nau suffered concussion, Hickey replied: "Yeah. He took a head knock in that game. He seems to be fine now. He was pretty fine even after the game. We're confident he'll be fine in regards to his clearance, and we will start him."

Under SANZAR rules, a concussed player must undergo a neurological test to enable him to compete the following week. The International Rugby Board stipulates that if a player either refuses the test or fails the test, he has a mandatory three-week break.

If the Waratahs would be severely weakened with Palu and Polota-Nau missing. Their options at No.8 are Ben Mowen or Luke Doherty, while Adam Freier would take over as hooker, with Damien Fitzpatrick as his back-up.

However, the timing of the Waratahs team announcement is open to conjecture. It is clear they want to be involved in some "cat and mouse" tactics this week, waiting to see what the Brumbies do before they respond.

Hickey said he was considering starting Timana Tahu at No.12 and putting Tom Carter on the bench, but that would depend on what the Brumbies did in midfield.

"We'll probably have a look at what they do select, but starting with either of the two [Tahu or Carter] is certainly an option for us," Hickey said.

There were enough clues coming out of the Brumbies camp yesterday to indicate that the Waratahs will be confronting a much-changed back line. Tyrone Smith is set to get his first start of the season, at inside-centre, with Stirling Mortlock moving out to his customary No.13 position.

Adam Ashley-Cooper is likely to go from outside-centre to fullback, with Mark Gerrard moving to the wing and either Clyde Rathbone or Francis Fainifo being demoted to the bench.

Brumbies coach Andy Friend yesterday conceded that after an early-season form slump it was probably time to move the Test skipper back to his usual spot.

"Stirling's shown on the Wallaby spring tour that he can play No.12, but what I've seen of him this year he's probably more comfortable at 13," Friend said.

Mortlock also appeared relaxed about a move. When asked how he thought he had played at inside-centre this year, Mortlock replied yesterday: "Personally I've felt a little bit off.

"I probably haven't been that comfortable in our style, which is probably a reflection of where the team has been at as well. We haven't gelled as a back line, and haven't been a cohesive attacking movement."

However, Friend will persevere with unpredictable five-eighth Christian Lealiifano.

"He's copped some unfair criticism," Friend said. "There's part of his game he hasn't been happy with and we haven't been happy with. But there's a whole chunk of his game which has been good, and I'm quite happy with how he is going."

? Former Wallabies kicking coach Ben Perkins has been called in to help the Western Force in the lead-up to Saturday's match against the Crusaders in Christchurch. Perkins, who lives in New Zealand, may soon replace Daryl Halligan as the Force's kicking coach.

Hoiles hasn't been quick off the mark this year. The loss of Palu won't be a huge worry. Smith nulified by Waugh. A Waratah Wallaby front row. Beale should play better than Leiofano. Gerrard no speed to catch the likes of Turner/Horne/Lote.

Waraths by 12.

I really hope the Brumbies persist with Mortlock at 12 for another week, it may work.
