Not sure how well known Nevin Spence would be in Australia but he was a rising star in Irish Rugby and was our young player of the year.

He was tipped for big things, a great loss to the world of rugby but more importantly a very tragic loss to his family who also lost his father and older brother to the same accident.

Nevin Spence killed in County Down slurry accident

Ulster rugby star Nevin Spence was one of three men killed when four people fell into a farm's slurry tank, his club has confirmed.

Rising star Spence, 22, played at centre for the provincial side and was called up to the Ireland training squad for the Six Nations last year.

The other men, aged 52 and 30, who died at Hillsborough, Co Down, are believed to be his brother and his father.

A woman thought to be his sister is being treated in hospital.

Ambulance crews were called to the farm just after 18:00 BST on Saturday.

The woman who was pulled alive from the slurry pit was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast where she is recovering from the effects of fume inhalation.

Spence had established himself as a regular in the Ulster squad in recent seasons, playing 42 times.

The former Wallace High School player made his first appearance for Ulster against Ospreys in April 2010.

After an injury-hit start to this season, he played for the Ulster Ravens, the club's reserve side, against Munster A at Deramore Park in Belfast on Friday.

Spence was named Young Player of the Year at the Irish Rugby Union Players' Association Awards last year.

Away from rugby, Spence helped out on the family farm and regularly and enthusiastically updated his many followers on Twitter and Facebook with pictures from the farm.

With his farming background, he recently signed as a brand ambassador for the Dairy Council of Ireland.

The accident at the farm in Drumlough Road, Hillsborough, is to be investigated by the Health and Safety Executive.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) sent rapid response teams when it was called to the farm.

Counterparts from the fire service pulled four people from the slurry pit, three of whom were unconscious.

Paramedics tried to resuscitate the three men but two died at the scene. The third man initially responded to resuscitation and was taken to the nearby Lagan Valley Hospital in Lisburn, where he died a short time later.

Ulster Farmers' Union (UFU) president Harry Sinclair said: "On behalf of all our members, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family involved. This news has shocked the farming community.
"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the three men who have so tragically lost their lives. We understand that a fourth member of the family has been hospitalised and we pray that they will make a full recovery".

Spence's Ulster team-mate Ian Humphreys tweeted: "Devastated to hear the news about Nevin Spence and his brother and dad. Prayers with all his family... RIP Nev, you'll never be forgotten."
Northern Ireland First Minister Peter Robinson said on Twitter: "Deeply saddened to hear of the tragedy in Hillsborough this evening. My thoughts and prayers are with family at this time of devastation."

Northern Irish golf star Rory McIlroy expressed his sympathies, tweeting: "Just heard the tragic news of Nevin Spence and his family. Makes you cherish every day you have on this Earth."

The rugby world here in the NH is in utter shock. I only saw him a couple of times with Ulster in HC matches - the only Celtic games I get to see - and he was talented. Just a tragedy in every way - for family and friends, and the rugby community.

Slurry tanks emit a lot of dangerous gases. It has been known for people to collapse due the fumes, fall in, & then their family members & friends have suffered the same fate tragically trying the rescue them. It sounds as if this may have been what had happened.

This is just horrible for those that died & the family & friends connected to them. RIP & condolences to their friends & family.

Yes this is pretty much what happened in this case. Family dog fell in the pit. Father went in to try to rescue it and was overcome, then the sons and daughter went in to try to rescue their father.

The Rugby community in Ireland today is just in complete shock about this.

Oh god that is terrible. They are experienced farmers so they must have thought the slurry was in enough of a well ventilated area to get away with the rescue attempt. I completed a confined spaces ticket course for a labouring job this year & they specifically used slurry tragedies as an example of just how dangerous fumes in confined spaces can be. Opened my eyes that is for sure.

The daughter is so lucky she is still alive.

Condolences to his family and friends for a terrible blow.

I saw him first as a 20 year old the season before last playing 12 and 13 and thought he would be in the mix for national honours once the big two retired down the track. He had already played for the A team.

From a rugby point of view and your feelings for the young player you have seen emerging, condolences to you Larno and other Ulster fans.

RIP Nevin Spence and brother and father; God bless.

Cheers Lee, the response back home has been great, tributes for the family have been pouring in.

There's a plan to try and get everyone to sing a round of Stand Up For The Ulstermen at every game at 3pm this Saturday after a minute's silence.

Everyone please feel free to join in. Spread the word.
