Fundraiser and this week's Rebels game.

Maciu Vosa sustained a serious injury while playing for Harlequin against Melbourne Uni in March of this year.

Maciu, married and a father of two young children, initially spent six weeks in the Austin Hospital and Maciu has recently been transferred to the Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre, where he will spend the next six to 12 months.

The result of his injury means that Maciu is paralysed from his upper chest down, with very little movement in his arms.

The Rebels want to help Harlequin Rugby Club raise funds to provide short and long term support for Maciu and his young family, including a specially made electric wheelchair for the six foot six second rower as well as a number of expensive modifications to his home and car.

You can donate to his cause, and you can also be a part of the fundraiser for Maciu on Saturday 6th June.

For $25 you get entry into the corporate area of AAMI stadium with platinum seating (but not stadium entry*) to watch two great matches and also support Maciu; gates open at 1.00pm, curtain raiser starts at 1.10pm and the Rebels are in action at 3.30pm, with the inaugural Direct Connect Dewar Shield Fastest Player Sprint happening at half time.

All proceeds of this event go to the ‘Maciu Vosa Trust’. Tickets for this function are limited, and these tickets allow you entry to the corporate room for the function and a platinum seat as well; it does not get you into the stadium. *To enter the stadium you must use your own Rebels membership or purchase a general admission ticket.

To buy a ticket to the fundraiser, click here.

Well into the 2nd round now, looks like the usual suspects are lining up for a bite of the cherry.

Who do we see as the finalists? Can Footscray sneak into the 4?

Who is our winner for 2015?

Will House win a game?? Clearly playing young kids that are on a steep learning curve....

Uni are looking good this year, their coaches always said it was going to be a 3 year turnaround and that seems on point.

You can never count out Quins or Melbourne, they are just too structured and have great depth throughout the club. If they have an injury to a player someone from the 2s will step up and know the patterns straight away.

Box Hill are looking good, however they are very hot and cold. One week everything fires and they put 50+ points on teams, but then the next week something won't and they'll struggle to either a scrappy win or a close lose.

Footscray seem to be finding their form again which is good for the comp. Might be 1 year too soon for them again but they should make the finals.

I think there are a few key match ups coming in the next 4-5 weeks where the top 5 are playing each other, also anyone heading to Frog Hollow seems to have their work cut out for them.

Round 14 27 June
Box Hill v Melbourne
Melbourne Uni v Moorabbin
Harlequin v Sth Districts
Footscray v Power House
Endeavour Hills v Bye

Round 15 4 July
Box Hill v Moorabbin
Power House v Endeavour Hills
Melbourne Uni v Harlequin
Melbourne v Footscray
Sth Districts v Bye

Round 16 11 July
Endeavour Hills v Melbourne Uni
Moorabbin v Melbourne
Sth Districts v Footscray
Box Hill v Power House
Bye v Harlequin

Round 17 18 July
Harlequin v Moorabbin
Power House v Sth Districts
Footscray v Box Hill
Endeavour Hills v Melbourne
Bye v Melbourne Uni

Round 18 25 July
Moorabbin v Endeavour Hills
Melbourne v Sth Districts
Melbourne Uni v Box Hill
Footscray v Harlequin
Power House v Bye

I think 1 good team is going to miss out this year and it's between Melbourne and Footscray.

July 4 is crucial for both Doggies and Melbourne, win sets up the rest of the season for either, although Doggies seemingly have a harder run home with BH and Quins to come.

Looks like they did! 27-22 winners away from home against Footscray, must have been a great effort and well done to House for finally getting the W.

Box Hill continue their good run and got the win against Melbourne in a hotly fought contest according to twitter.

Uni and Quins both put on 45 points against Moorabbin and Souths respectively.

By my estimate the top of the Moorabbin's slim chances of making finals have gone, and Melbourne are 3 points adrift from Footscray. Box Hill are assured of a finals berth with Uni just needing 2 points from this weekend's game to do the same.

4 rounds to go now and this weekend is the key game for Melbourne and Footscray's seasons.

Caderyn Neville describes this comp as the equivalent of Sydney 3rd/4th grade. That seems harsh?

Being that I've only played in the VRU I can't comment with any authority. Having said that, from what others tell me I thought it would have been closer to 2nd / 3rd grade? He did play for Footscray, who haven't been enjoying huge success of late.

I've refereed Sydney 2nd grade and the Dewar Shield, the best DS teams would be able to handle their own in Sydney 2nd grade. However the lower teams would get trounced.
There is a difference in skill levels obviously, but it's mainly the tactics used. Melbourne rugby, generally, is more forward dominated and will look to hit it up in the 1st or 2nd channels, up in Sydney they spread it wider a lot more. That's not to say we don't have talented players down here, it's just quite different rugby.

I think that's overly harsh. A good friend was struggling to get a game in 2nds in Vic and went up to Sydney and had no trouble playing 2nd grade Shute Shield.

If what Caydern said was the case, things like that wouldn't happen.

Comparing it to Brisbane, I think the good teams would compete well in the Hospitals Cup and be mid pack but again the poorer teams would cop repeated hidings.

Look at MU for example. That team is chock full of players who have played NZ Prems, lower level NPC, Brisbane and Sydney Prems and players who have played International Under 20s for Samoa, Fiji, etc. when they were 2 or 3 years younger. Neville is kidding if he thinks they're a 3rd grade Shute Shield team. Many of them are just as good as some of the NRC players running around outside of Victoria.

Seems like Melbourne turned it on against Footscray. 77-7 winners, puts them into the top 4.

Last Week Position Team Total Pts Max Points
1 1 Box Hill 68 83
3 2 Harlequin 61 75
2 3 Melbourne University 59 73
5 4 Melbourne 47 62
4 5 Footscray 45 60
6 6 Moorabbin 27 42
7 7 Southern Districts 27 42
8 8 Endeavour Hills 22 37
9 9 Power House 22 37

Remaining fixtures and Footscray definitely have the hardest run home. Especially compared to their main rivals in making finals, Melbourne. You woudl expect that Uni and Quins are fighting it out to see who faces Box Hill in the 1st week of finals and gets the 2nd chance.

Round 16 11 July
Endeavour Hills v Melbourne Uni
Moorabbin v Melbourne
Sth Districts v Footscray
Box Hill v Power House
Bye v Harlequin

Round 17 18 July
Harlequin v Moorabbin
Power House v Sth Districts
Footscray v Box Hill
Endeavour Hills v Melbourne
Bye v Melbourne Uni

Round 18 25 July
Moorabbin v Endeavour Hills
Melbourne v Sth Districts
Melbourne Uni v Box Hill
Footscray v Harlequin
Power House v Bye

Top 4 sorted now, who's the winner?

No idea. All 4 sides seem to be peaking at the right time and on their day can play some very good rugby.

Just having a look at the tables, Uni need to beat BH 2nds to have the top 4 in P1-3 be the same teams.
What happens when a team have grades being at different pitches?
For example all of the grades have the following finals format, but what happens if you have a side in the 1st or 2nd for one grade and then 3rd or 4th for the other grades? Melbourne and Box Hill are the 2 sides who this could potentially effect. Do you split your club up, or do the VRU move around one of the semis for the club to be together?

1 August - Semi Finals
SF 1 - Team 1 v Team 2
SF 2 - Team 3 v Team 4

8 August - Preliminary Final Loser SF 1 v Winner SF 2

15 August – Grand Final Winner SF1 v Winner PF

They usually work it so that the hosting clubs have the majority of their games at the one ground. They also play the lower grades earlier so players can travel and bench.

BH will finish 1st in P1, so will have all of their games at home. The 3rd grade game will be early so that MU can travel and bench for their 2nds. Similar set up at MU where the Quins 3rds will need to travel to bench.

Good games yesterday?? I was at the schools finals, big gap in 1st and 2nd place which is not ideal...game was halted for a serious injury, apparently he is all fine.

The P1 game was a good one to watch, Uni were just too clinical in the 2nd half. Box Hill seemed to rely on their pace out wide but Uni have just as much speed and were able to shut them down.

The Div2A game was entertaining if a little scrappy compared to the P1/2 games. Kiwis scored a couple of long range tries in the last 10 minutes to win.

Those are the only ones I was able to watch whilst relaxing.

I think most of them are already on YouTube but had a quick look and the quality once again is poor.
