Am debating a turn at Mboyti in the Transkei after Knysna.....some good fishing that side. But Ive done that trip a few times already and am looking for something new. Struisbaai is near a spot I will be stopping at mind you. De mond , it produces some great esturine angling.

Hello lads, yes I am a very keen fisherman.

In fact, the reason I've been off this board for a while is due to the fact my brother has been back from OS on holidays and we've been fishing for the past few weeks around the Gold Coast area.

Below are some decent dusky flathead we've caught in the past couple of weekends. Flathead over 70 cm must be released unharmed in QLD, because they are the breeders. The legislation is working, because the next day after my brother caught this 76cm specimen, I caught what I reckon is the same fish from the same small gutter, on the same lure. Amazing shit!

For those who didn't know, I am the one without the kid. :thumb

Brothers can be handy, you havent gotten round to getting one for yourself yet?

Those flathead fish can you eat them?

too right you can eat flathead (or lizards, as we call them...for obvious reasons), they just have to be between 40 and 70 cm in length, well in QLD anyway. NSW has different rules regarding this species, but I don't really know what they are (or care ;)).

Dusky Flathead possess beautiful flaky white flesh that lends itself very well to all types of cooking. :p My mouth is now watering thinking about the flathead in beer batter I made myself last weekend. :thumb

Good one .

Your brother seems to be using very light tackle.

I went up the Berg river this weekend past off a farm in an area called Hopefield. Its about 10 clicks from the coast , and the breeding ground for your typical esturine fish. We went in a canoe because the river banks are very shallow , and to get your bait into the channel you need a good cast to get into the channel.Thats pretty tricky with light tackle and you got a better chance of fighting a good fish off a canoe than off a river bank , because of obstructions. Larger fish were about , as I lost one that snapped me off ( I was using 5 pound line , pinky stick and a coffee grinder ) , but the majority of the takes were from juvenile fish.I havent checked , but this could be the time that the juveniles move down river to the mouth.
There was also a lot of fine grass type sea weed in the water which would discourage the bigger fish because of the gills.Didnt take photos because my catches were too small , but this is the fish I was targetting and hooked. Two Steenbras and one elf.

I had targetted thosse two species , and used mud prawns , which I pumped the weekend before for the Steenbras , and Sardine for the elf.Caught all my fish on the high tide .

Nice work neybra. Those elf look very similar (in fact are probably the same species) to what we call tailor? Here they grow to around 14kgs but are never seen above about 5-6 kgs.

With your gear, do you use braided gelspun line? It is extremely thin for it's given breaking strain, so you can cast miles, and still have the pulling power to extract good fish. My brother and I both use threadline reels mostly (which I assume is what you call 'coffee grinders'?), though in the pics I posted of me, I am using my trusty old Shimano Calcutta baitcaster reel. We normally run 6 pound line for our estuary fishing, though certain fish demand heavier line. These flathead only need light line, but a decent monofilament trace or leader is mandatory to prevent to the flatheads raspy teeth sawing through the line.

Here's a decent tailor I got a couple of years ago, so you can see if it's what you catch over there?

my Mum does some type of batter that doesn't require beer. :nta: I dunno, I'm not much of a cook. :-[ Anyway, the beer batter I do has lemon pepper, cider vinegar, mixed herbs and an egg in it. Sorry if it's too ho-hum for you Mr Chef ::), but geez, the results of this simple concoction taste bloody superb. ;)

I use giant abrasion line , it has strength and not a lot of stretch.Which is more ideally suited for Rock and Surf .But I get 250m onto a reel so thats cool for Esturine fishing. The braided line is pretty expensive here . I also use monofilament leader but didnt need it this weekend because the fish were attracted to the flavour of the bait more than the visual apppearance because the water was pretty murky..There has been a bit of rain lately. I am going to fish off the coast this weekend at a spot close to home which I havent tried yet , but there I will use a baitcaster with 14 foot rod and 12.5 kg line to get distance. i will pump some prawns some time this week ( which is quickly passing ) and try with those and white mussels , to target the larger Steenbras .Elf is the same as your Tailor and gets to the same size. They are family to Leerfish ( Garrrick ).

Just a question. I caught a lot of " Jack " , off the Red Sea.....what are they related to in your waters.

Jack in America refer to what we call trevally, of which there are many species.

Don't know if that's what you are talking about?

I'll dig out a pic tomorrow

I thought so , cos I got a few of those around the 8 to 26 kg mark , using a spoon pulled behind the boat.

Virgie the co I work for specialise in batter. We make them for I&J and Sea Harvest, two of SA's biggest fish producers. I'll get you a link. Go to http://www.bokomo.co.za/

click on other brands then Bokomo crumbs and coatings. Hope sardyntjie buy them, if he dont he can kiss Georges Sevens goodbye.

My Mrs also make her own one. She is actually very good with this using Weet-Bix ,bread , egg & flower. She'll use it when we make sometime home chicken snitzels and trust me the kids will rather have the home made as bought ones. We obvious use it for fish also.
