Where to for quality Rugby journalism???

East Coast Aces

If you ever feel like wasting 5 minutes of your life that you will never get back, read Spiro's and Andrew Slacks articles.

If they are going to use G&GR for article ideas and information why aren't they writing more club rugby articles.

It's not a rumour.

He's gone at the end of the season.

It's not like he's going to be replaced. There will just be less coverage in general combined with more use of press release type material and AAP news items.

A fair plethora of unemployed ex-Fairfax employees.

Would a shorter listing be who's left at Fairfax?

He's been there a while. I'm sure his redundancy was substantial.

And he can use it to start his soon to be award-winning blog, The Pie Hunter. In 2014 he will sell it to The Huffington Post for $30 million and live off that thick, crunchy, buttery crust forever.

In all seriousness, though, that list at Fairfax is just appalling. I know this is off-topic, but rugby is the least of the casualties. The idea of democracy without a vibrant press is unknown territory. The Oz is in a similar state, propped up by the rest of News. We could be faced with a drastically altered media landscape in this country very, very quickly.

Wow. That list of redundancies at the SMH is worth a thread of its own. A lot of top quality journalism being lost right there.

I think "Australian Media" and "Top quality journalism" is fast becoming an oxy-moron.

We need to act quickly to turn that around, lest we become the kind of nation that thinks "Fox and Friends" and "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" are real news programs.

Shows like ACA, Today/Tonight and gossip columnists such as GG pretending to be "real" journo's are a cancerous blight.

Wow. That list of departures from Fairfax is massive. Seems they will be more of an aggregator of material from a variety of sources rather than generating any original content. Another nail in the coffin.

Hope Growden has a big last day and names names. From today's Ruck & Maul, it could be inferred that Radio and Wizard are from NSW.

RUCK AND MAUL - 31 AUGUST 2012 www.smh.com.au
That infamous official known as Radio because of his big mouth has resurfaced. He made a dill of himself last week when in tandem with his mate, the Wizard, was sighted tired and emotional hailing a cab at Circular Quay, telling anyone that Beale and Cooper were going as a package deal to rugby league. The possible departure of Beale will shock one of Radio's few supporters.

Some credit to Growden:

I approached various journos in 2010 about then 7s coverage of Wallabies tests. He was the only one that mentioned the fight in the R&M column.

Who the hell will cover the game in NSW? Will Robinson get a wider scope along with another journo?

Reassuring to see our Rugby journo down here still in a job.
