Another great year of cycling gets underway tonight with the First stage of the Mitchelton Bay Classic showing on Fox at 11pm. Pity no Simon Gerrans who's out with a broken collar bone.

Also this month are the Aust Road Championships, the Tour Down Under and the Cadel Evans One Day (?) race to celebrate his retirement.

My thnaks to SBS, Channel 9 and Eurosport for bringing some of the most exciting sports you can imagine to us as the world cycling circuit proceeds through the year.

So, how good is Caleb Ewen, 20yo riding with the Orica Greenedge team. Winner of Stage 1 from NZ's Greg Henderson. Henderson's quote afterwards, "My personal best and my sprint today was 1500 Watts and he came past me like I was tied to a lamp post. Like, I don't know".

Says it all.

Caleb Ewen again first to cross the line after a near-perfect team effort by Cameron Meyer, Michael Hepburn and Mitch Docker. No-one else really in the picture.

Wondering if anyone else is following the race or if I'm talking to myself.:)

My Dad and his partner have been cycling with Caleb Ewan at the Southern Highlands Club since Caleb was a young teenager. Everyone apparently knew he was destined for big things from a young age.

The club would do a big ride and then everyone would retire for a coffee etc. and Caleb would then ride up and down Macquarie Pass (I think it was) for a couple more hours.

It was great to see him get a pro contract last year and even better seeing how well he's going now!

Apparently he's a lovely and humble young man as well.

Another stage and another win for Caleb Ewan. Impressed also with Alex Edmonson, a track specialist, who came in third.

Greg Henderson won today. Ewan came fifth which was enough to win the overall series though.

Yeah. Disappointing in a way that he couldn't make it a clean sweep. Apparently would have been a first. Perhaps even winning the first three stages was a first?

Australian Road Championships now underway. Steele Vonn Hoff retained the National Criterium title from Caleb Ewan. Is he (Von Hoff) still signed with the Garmin team on the world tour?

Replays on Foxsports for anyone interested.

Congratulations to Jack Bobridge winner of Stage 1 at the Tour Down Under. Anyone else absolutely pissed off with the Channel 9 coverage? Too many talking heads, too much repetition, and too many Ads. Not a patch on SBS in the past even though they are using the same main commentators.

And congratulations to SA's Rohan Dennis who took out his first World tour win for BMC. Rohan is an excellent time triallist and has shown he can also climb (at least over our hills). If he can handle Europe's large mountains he will have a very successful career I think.

Rohan Dennis broke the world hour record last night.

He covered 52.491km in the hour.

Apparently his target was 52.5km so I guess he must be a bit disappointed to fail by 9 metres ;)

He broke the previous world record by 7-800m.

This record has come back into vogue lately so don't be surprised if it doesn't last for long. There are several riders with plans to have a crack in the next few months including Bradley Wiggins.

Congratulations to Orica GreenEdge (OGE) for another very successful year on the world tour in 2015. The Yates twins, Esteban Chavez and Caleb Ewan especially had some stand out results, and Michael Matthews almost got his world championship jersey. Will happen one day I believe.

The pint sized Chavez ought to be given Honorary Australian Citizenship so that he can enjoy all the Australian sports awards next year after winning the Tour de France.

Will be even more exciting in 2016 as OGE stand up as GC contenders in all the stage races.

The year in review is at http://www.greenedgecycling.com/.
