So the shortlists for the men's and women's player of the year get announced on Monday.

My prediction is Beauden Barrett will win the thing. Hard to pick the other finalists. Owen Farrell and Maro Itoje are probably a chance. Michael Hooper would be the Wallabies' best shot at a nomination.

Just to clarify what is the exact period of games the votes fall in?

Includes last years Spring Tour, June Tests and Rugby Championship?

For NH: Six nations, June Tests?

There was no Spring Tour last year.

It includes all of 2016. The 2015 award was handed out at the conclusion of the RWC.

The World Rugby player of the year award seems to consider non test rugby as well although it is hard to really quantify.

This is a panel selection on an overall basis rather than trying to award MOTM votes in each game.

If that is the case I think Barrett will win easily. If it was MOTM votes maybe Itoje has a chance then.

Is this the same timeframes as the Australian Awards? I'm trying to figure out how on earth Folau won it last year ahead of Hooper and Pocock.

The John Eales medal goes from (generally) the end of the Rugby Champs / Bledisloe. So November to October ish.

That was an ARU vote rigging conspiracy to make sure Folau re-signed. [/Tinfoilhat]

I think the Beaugan's a fairly obvious choice here, had an outstanding Super Rugby season & Championship. Coupla not so good games of late but I'd think would've had enough runs on the board to head off the competition.

Sadly I don't see enough women's rugby to have an informed opinion but my gut says Hunter.

Thinking about it Coles and Itoje would be Barretts closest competition. Would be surprised if Barrett didn't get it though.

Didn't think Vunipola was too crash hot in the June tests so he must have had a superb 6 nations.

Can't really argue with any of those awards, though to be fair 7s players etc could be anyone for how much I watch of it.
I do tend to think if it me perhaps I would of gone for Coles, but certainly wouldn't argue with Itoje who won breakout player of the year, I think he is a seriously good player and will be a top lock for a long time!
