Holmes plays for the Sunnybank club in the Brisbane Premier competition.

Provincial

After debuting for the Reds in 2005, coming off the bench against the Blues in Auckland, 2006 year was the making of Greg, who played in all 13 Super 14 matches.

Despite a shoulder aggravation, Greg soldiered on through the season and his solid performance won him selection in the Wallabies squad where he cemented himself as the top loosehead prop in the country before a neck injury ruled him out of the Spring Tour.

He was building up to another big year in 2007 when a shoulder reconstruction put paid to his Investec Super 14 season after just three games and left him in a race against time to be fit for the Rugby World Cup.

He won selection for France but had limited opportunity to impress, coming off the bench against Fiji and starting the final pool match against Canada.

An operation to remove a loose bone fragment in his knee in 2008 restricted him to just eight Investec Super 14 matches and affected his chances of representative selection that year.

He was dogged by injury again in 2009.

Greg showed his versatility in 2010 by playing at both loosehead and tighthead prop at various times. He also made his 50th appearance in Super Rugby and for the Reds
Greg made 15 appearances in 2011 at either loosehead or tighthead prop during the St.George Queensland Reds Super Rugby success.

International

In 2004 he represented Australia at the Under 21 World Championship in Scotland after playing for Queensland A and the Queensland Academy of Sport Under 19s.

After spending time in Camp Wallaby early in 2005 Holmes represented Australia A against the Junior All Blacks in Canberra and Sydney, before winning selection in the Spring Tour squad where he played against the French Barbarians and then made his Test debut as a replacement against France in Marseille. Holmes came off the bench in Australia's loss to England in Twickenham, where the English overpowered the Wallabies with their scrummaging. He was included in John Connolly's Wallaby side to face the English at Telstra Stadium. In the return match against the English, Australia won 34 to 3. Holmes scored a remarkable try against the Irish running over 60 meters (24 June 2006). He also scored in Australia's 49-0 victory over South Africa, this time scoring a try more akin to a prop (smashing through 3 South African tackles).

Wallabies selectors showed tremendous faith in 2006 Australian Rookie of the Year Greg Holmes by including him in the 30-man squad for the World Cup despite his absence from the majority of the Super 14 season and entire winter Test series after undergoing a shoulder reconstruction.
