G&GR World Cup Podslam 5

Steve Timms October 5, 2011 8

No GravatarScott “Cote” Bryant and I dial up Gagger who is doing it tough in a winery somewhere on the South Island of Un Zud and have a chat about the upcoming Quarter Finals.

Some of the games we tip the same, some different. Who will have predicted right. Go the Welsh…

Also, I think this is supposed to be Podslam 4, but I named it and it is 5.

Re. the defensive centres v’s Barnsey.

You may be on to something there.

What I remember most about the WB’s winning their last game against the Saffers was our backs putting on those crunching tackles, as they rushed up on the Saffer backs. I’m sure it cost the Jarpies points in the wash up.

If we go with Barnsey, will we lose something? How much will it be a factor?

Captain hook would have been awesome…

Good as always guys, love listening to these on my commute in pomland

I also like your comments Gagger on Pat. I’d been going along with the general BB froth but I think you’ve converted me. This is shaping up to be a mud wrestle with some of the roughest bastards out there, I’m happy to have a hard tackler/hitter in the backs; QC, KB, JOC and Diggs give more than enough flair/kicking.

Who can remember Ant’s awesome hit in the last SA game? Smashing guys way behind the gain line is not only awesome for turnovers- it pumps up the crowd, pumps up the team and the opposition start to take their eyes off the ball. I think its fine to have a guy just focussed on that.

I’m still not convinced on McCabe being the man. He offers plenty in his tackling but nothing in attack. I’d go so far as to say he is a liability in attack. If the backrow are working well together 6 and 8 should be helping out with the big hits so 7 can get in there and pilfer/disrupt their ball. If the weather turns out dry as predicted we may see the Boks spreading the ball wide 50% of the time but the other 50% will see them kicking for the corners to take advantage of Sharpe being left out of the team and the Wallabies lineout not being as competitive. If it is wet it will be more like 90% of the time.

In attack Barnes provides the Wallabies with significantly more options. He can run, kick and distribute the ball in attack. Ironically, McCabe provides the Boks the same opportunity in defence that he is there to provide to the Wallabies. They know he’ll run straight (hopefully not high) and hard right in to their rushing defence with little chance of him offloading.

I actually really like McCabe as a player but prefer him to be in the back 3 where he has more room to attack. We have a great back 3 for the Wallabies though so I’d leave him on the bench as a utility replacement.

scotland needed a bonus point over england because of the points differential, by halftime it was clear that england would make it seeing as they had 60+ pd
