absolutely - I made the same comment on the last one, nearly everything (tackling, clean-outs, etc) are schoolboyish but the passing, support and lines just look brilliant.

Yeah there was some sublime rugby captured by that video. But the thing that grabbed my attention was the scrum engaging entirely on its own. We've had so much of the crouch, touch, pause, engage nonsense that we've actually forgotten that we used to set our own scrums. Scrums also engaged with slightly less impact in those days and seem to have collapsed less. I think the current system of control by the referee, for all its worthy and understandable objectives, doesn't enhance the scrum contest at all. In fact it ruins it - in the humble opinion of someone who used to love being able to do whatever was needed to subdue the opposing prop and/or hooker.

The skill gap is most evident in the basic catch / pass / support skills of the '84 backs. Watch Campo's second and Ella's tries, both players remain in the game after passing and go on to score the try.

Thanks for the memories! Was in the terraces behind the goal posts where Mark Ella scores... You might be able to pick me out..... I'm the one shivering, between 500 pasty faced Scots, in what seemed like minus 50 degrees.

Is it just me or does there seem to be a distinct skill gap between the backs of 84 and today, with the current ones clearly being the lesser? I know there was more space then, but there is some fantastic counter attacking and intuitive rugby on show in that game.

Awesome article Nodds, This current tour has seen two great tries scored, the AAC v England and the Elsom v Ireland were awesome. Lets hope we get a grandslam of memorable tries, continuing with scotland!
