I guess the headline says it all.
It’s an interesting choice. It makes sense for Mortlock to pass it on, but I think everyone would have expected George Smith to pick it up. There was a story that Smith didn’t particularly want the role long term, having had it last season. I also wonder if there are question marks internally over just how long they can keep him, with all the French chat after the Euro tour?
From a team management point of view it does make sense though. Without having a clue about his captaining abilities, Hoiles’ inability to get a regular Wallabies spot is a blessing for the Ponies – means he gets more time with the squad pre-season. This also puts a pair of golden handcuffs on him, making it less likely for him to piss off to Europe if he doesn’t have a Wallaby contract.
