Reds & Roberts Reunite!

We have our sauces February 9, 2011 11

No GravatarWe brought you the story about a month ago of a new mystery player set to link up with the Queensland Reds. That story can be found here, but it seemed to run cold around the time of the floods. Well Green and Gold Rugby can EXCLUSIVELY reveal that Roberts is set to make his first appearance at Reds training THIS Thursday morning.

Mortlock, Delve & Roberts (obscured, out of frame)

Whilst the floods seem to have played a part in the delayed start to the Super Season for Roberts, rumours abound that he also used the period to ‘test the waters’ if you excuse the somewhat distasteful pun.

“Ok, I’ll admit it. I’ve had some discussions with the Melbourne Rebels” explained Roberts.

“Most people would be aware that I am pretty close to the Weeksy and Delvey, and Gareth definitely did try to entice me to Melbourne. I don’t see a problem with having those discussions. I mean to represent Queensland is a lifelong dream, but opportunities come up elsewhere I’d be mad not to look at them.”

It would seem that Roberts is not just restricting himself to rugby either. When asked as to whether he had been approached by Craig Davison, the Brisbane business man behind a big to secure a second NRL team for Brisbane, Reg was coy.

“Right, who told you? Look, at this stage I can neither confirm nor deny I have been approached by Craig over lunch in Toowong last week.”

Reds players react to hearing news of Roberts coming to train with them.

The AFL seem to be also in the hunt as they look to break into new markets across the country.

“You’re making this hard for me as I want my focus to be on the Reds and the Reds only. What I will say is that the AFL recognised there was an untapped market for Polynesians in AFL out there. So they signed a couple of Polynesian athletes in Israel Folau and Karmichael Hunt” Roberts said.

“Let’s just say the AFL have also realised there is an untapped market in overweight, aging men with absolutely no idea about their sport. So they came to me.”

“However I can reiterate that my commitment is 100% towards the Reds and I’ll be doing all I can to ensure their success in Super Rugby this season.”

Reg Roberts will be training with the Reds this Thursday morning at Ballymore and G&GR will have a full report following the session.

The Reds are sure things for the Super title if they can secure the services of such a top line player. Will make a difference to the team for round 1 against the Force. Clever move by Link not to play him in the trials so the opposition don’t have any footage of him.

Yeah agree Jets, cunning stuff from Link. However I have heard that the reason Roberts didn’t make an appearance in Darwin was due to the fact that the team flights were inadvertantly booked with Jetstar, and Roberts was banned from all Jetstar flights after a somewhat unsavoury incident back in 2003. All I heard about that was that 16 hours of steam cleaning still couldn’t remove the llama blood from the cockpit.

Lets hope we can keep players like Roberts in our code in Australia. I hope the ARU is banging down his door, much like they have with Moore, Mitchell and Ashley-Cooper.

Just doing some Minor work to my fantasy team and found R.Roberts at basement pricing. Bargain in my eyes. Clearly the brains trust in fantasy world only work of previous year stats and not sheer awesomeness.

I’ve got the mail on this Roberts guy from some old school chums of his. Apparently he was a dynamite front rower at Gregory Terrace in the 80s and then disappeared overseas to play.

I heard that he ended up as an integral part of the Clochemerle pack in France in the Top Drawer. He apparently claimed he was of Georgian descent and played under an assumed name – Iosef Vissarionovich Djugashvili.

Certainly, the Reds need scrummagers of his ability. I look forward to seeing Roberts/Djugashvilli – the Red menace, in action.

Gregory Terrace in the 1980s????? How old is he now?

  • nathan

Obviously this will count as a marquee signing for the reds??
