Podcast 283 – Second Guessing

The Green and Gold Rugby Show is back for another week, with Matt, Hugh and Brett McKay here to talk all the latest topics in Australian rugby.

The Five Burning Questions:

1. What was the best and worst performance from round 3?
2. Three rounds in, are there are any Aussie contenders that could win Super Rugby?
3. Will the new Western Force squad be competitive in 2018?
4. Raelene’s Rugby Australia: has it been a step in the right direction or is it more of the same?
5. What are our predictions for round 4?

  • D. Braithwaite’s The Brumbies

Will Foley get better though? He hasn’t performed since at least 2015, and Australia hasn’t had any 10 look consistently good since Quade last played well on the 2013 Spring Tour. Incredible that a country that prides itself on its skilled backs cannot produce any flyhalf that would start for any of the home nations, let alone New Zealand.

Edit: Matt Toomua might start for a few, maybe, based on his form for Leicester, but we lost him.

    • Huw Tindall

I was always thought Cheika’s passion was a good thing but losing your cool and threatening to take thr team off is just too far. Needs to pull his head in and focus on developing a big aggressive forward pack that get Genia et al all the clean ball they need.

I also agree that Foley’s stagnation is a worry. His kicking is 100% one week and 70% next week. I’ll take 85% every week thanks. Hasnt added any distance to his clearing kicks either. He does look good running it back on counter attack. Has a knack of finding gaps.

      Anyhow – great pod!

      • Brisneyland Local

Hay Huw! I agree. That news about Cheika was kind of kept quiet. It is absolutely disturbing. I got pillored last year for critiscising Cheika on this site, saying his temper and type of behaviour was appalling. But tfor this to come out over the xmas break further vindicates my posts. He is an ass clown, and should not be national coach!

        • Alister Smith

BL I was possibly one of the ones doing the pilloring (or is that pillorying) but if that sorry is true then, as much as I don’t go much on Clyne, I have serious doubts around Cheika now. There have been a couple of instances now where I have sensed some arrogance in his comments, particularly those around him appointing his successor. You need more than a 50/50 win rate to appoint your own successor and personally I can’t see anything yet in his “system” that deserves to be carried on. I was hoping that, given time, his master plan would be revealed and everyone would see it but I am now beginning to doubt its existence. Still I hope we somehow manage to pull it all together and I can’t see much point changing coaches now – we may as well ride this one out but post World Cup is a good time to try something different.

        • Brisneyland Local

Al, Look I was in a similar frame of mind, i.e. what is done is done let the world cup ride out then change. But I am now worried that that arrogance will transfer to the playing group. Then we will end up with a situation like Link inherited and tried to break, but the tarts player mafia ended up winning. The longer Cheika stays the longer his bad culture eminates! His bad behaviour continues unabated. Cheika needs to go and needs to go ASAP.

        • Alister Smith

I just feel that we’ve contracted him and may as well follow it through – it may be that he is able to get the best out of them in a short campaign. If someone takes over pre-World Cup – and no one with any real experience is really standing up just yet – then they have the same issues as both Cheika and Connolly had with short lead ups to the World Cup and inheriting someone else development and selections. I think whoever the new bloke/blokes will be that they deserve a fresh start to build without the initial pressure of a world cup in the immediate horizon. Perhaps give it to Larkham on a caretaker basis if Cheika has another outburst.

        • Brisneyland Local

A lot of merit in what you have said.

        • onlinesideline

the Scottish implosion was the surest reflection that Wallaby team spirit was built on clay feet, so I agree. That wasn’t end of year tiredness that was team fragmenting from too many mixed messages at training, too many weird slections and a general this is all fucking stupid feeling amongst players.

Spot on about the intentional knock down rule. It’s a mess.
Compare any of those to Kurtley’s send off against england last year.
Rugby laws can be a joke sometimes

    • D. Braithwaite’s The Brumbies

But there was no doubt about Kurtley’s being on purpose.

Intentional knock down is such a silly rule anyway in my opinion. I think if you’re in the position to disrupt the attacking players and not offside you should be able to knock it down and just have a scrum. It’s a rule that bends over backwards to help the attacking team.

      • Mart

It’s impossible to gauge someones intention.

        Agreed.

The tv interest is really interesting. (apologies double interest)
I’d love to see a deal done with free to air. Could be a foot in the door for a domestic comp on free to air, which would broaden the rugby market. More eye’s potentially equals more players…..
I really think that one of rugby’s biggest stumbling blocks has been putting all their eggs in one basket with pay tv. Be great to see a deal more like league or afl.
    Get more content out there

    • Huw Tindall

I think every fans has been saying this for a while now. Guess we are locked into a Broadcasting deal until 2020 but you’d hope they would look at this again at the time. Ultimately though RA needs $X million to run rugby in Australia. If they can’t get that from free to air then leaves little room to move.

      • Alister Smith

At one stage we used to get a Super Rugby Aussie match of the round played on replay. Obviously this didn’t rate well (or well enough to justify it continuing) or perhaps Fox just wouldn’t agree to allow it as part of the deal. I thought perhaps a regular live game with one of the Australia franchises (not always a derby) on FTA could actually be beneficial for the Pay TV broadcasters in helping to build their audience but perhaps not. It would be good to see a network take rugby on seriously. A Thursday night panel show previewing the games of the week on one of the extra channels and showing clips from the previous week’s games and also reviewing what’s happening in Six Nations, Top 14 and English Premier Rugby.

Can I suggest a potential topic for next week’s Podcast – Has Eddie Jones lost it with England and was it inevitable that this would happen. Funny how they started losing right at the time when he was suggested as a replacement for Cheika.

  • Brisneyland Local

Really intersting pod guys. Having Brett on is a really good addittion. BL’s points:
    – Matt R, your tipping after this pod must be looking good. You made some great calls. Not sure whether they were your genuine beliefs or you being humourously cynical. Either way doesnt matter after the Reb’s pumped the Brumbies.
    – Any pod that gives Jaco Pyper a serve is good in my book.
    – The news about Cheika is disturbing. I already thought he was an ass clown, that just further consolidates my position. What national coach threatens to pull his team off. What in immature and irrational fuckwit! I seriously hope that Raylene is succession planning, and hopefully before the world cup.

    Keep it up guys.
