Podcast 317 – Cheikmate (2019 Rugby World Cup Finals Review)

The wild ride is over for the Wallabies, as they crashed out 40-16 against the old enemy in the World Cup.

With the Cheika era over and our World Cup dream finished for another four years, this marks what is going to be a significant episode of the Green and Gold Rugby Show.  This week, Rugby Reg makes his return, and sits down with Matt and Hugh to discuss the fallout of the loss, and the start of what could be one of the most significant changes in Australian Rugby history.

Warning – occasional coarse language

The Five Burning Questions:

1. What happened against England?
2. What should be the fall out of this result and Cheika’s resignation?
3. What positives do we take forward to 2020?
4. What stood out in other quarter final matches?
5. who do you reckon will be in the grand final?

    Another great podcast. Can you get a player who will talk? Surely someone can talk about how the players reacted to Cheiks’ dumbass rugby?

    On Hugh’s point of there seemingly being harmony in camp – to go along with this point, Will Genia posted a picture of he and Cheika together with the caption (I may be paraphrasing);

    “I could say a lot, but simply, the best coach I’ve ever had”

      That’s astonishing, based on what. It’s a bit like an actor in a science fiction movie I guess, to be convincing one has to ‘believe the fiction’

        I reckon it’s too soon to expect anything else, MC probably even hasn’t cleaned out his office yet. Someone from the camp might crack later on if they get angry enough, maybe after some reflection.

    Not sure the coach has to have international experience lots of good coaches arrive on the scene without it. Nor do we want a coach who wishes to impose a style on the team after what has happened. Are we allowed to promote from within if the U20s coaching team want a gig?

    Great discussion, thanks guys

    It is easy to forget how horrible this Cheika era has been. My god there have been some low points.

    Remember in 2017, when we lost to Scotland twice. The first loss was at home and Scotland’s best players were on the Lions tour – so, yeah, we were playing a weakened Scots team at home and lost. The 2nd game was in Scotland later in the year, and we were thrashed – Scotland put 50 points on us. We played the most clueless idiotic Rugby all that year.

    And after the losses, Cheika talked about how the scar tissue from such a difficult time would help to make us stronger in the future. Absolute bullshit.
