Podcast 48: Let’s Get Physical

Steve Timms November 10, 2011 3

No GravatarI get together with Scott Allen and a couple of guests. First I chat with Charlie Higgins, Head of Strength and Conditioning at the Western Force, about some of the work involved in the pre-season. Then I catch up with Craig from 1tierrugby to talk about what he’s doing to develop the game.

Scott and I also find a little bit of time to run our eye over the Wallabies spring tour squad.

    Great podcast.

I really liked the interview about 1tier rugby, thought it was a great cause. We should keep our eyes out for similar causes and give them some airtime, as the wider rugby community probably doesn’t know about a lot of the work going on (I sure as hell don’t), but would like to contribute in some way.

I liked the mention to Malta Rugby in the 1tierrugby. I lived in Malta for 4 years (I now live back in Brisbane) and played in the local domestic comp for 3 seasons. I loved playing rugby in Malta and loved to watch the National team play other countries like Sweden, Lativa, Andorra etc.

I was never eligible to play for the National team but would have loved to be included as lot of my Maltese team mates played. I did get to represent their Maltese Rugby League team tho (which is an even less developed sport in Europe).

My local side in Malta even organised a trip to Sicily where we played Ragusa. After the game they served us some Spaghetti – it was a surreal experience.

There is so much potential for these countries to compete with the bigger nations. Rugby is a great game and its amazing there a little pockets of communites that play rugby in countries you would not expect.

Here is a clip of me scoring a try in the local comp (they record the bigger games and air them on the local sport cable tv):
