Pre-Bledisloe trial match announced for Wallabies

Pre-Bledisloe trial match announced for Wallabies

With all Australian Super Rugby sides, bar the Waratahs, now knocked out of the competition and with the first Bledisloe Cup still a few weeks away, Rugby Australia has announced that a full-contact trial will be played as part of the Wallaby’s preparations.

The match will take place at Leichardt Oval next Friday (3 August) night from 6:45pm.  The match will be free of charge and will also be live streamed at rugby.com.au

No Waratahs will be considered for the match, regardless of the outcome of their Super Rugby Semi Final this weekend. Instead the teams will be a “Michael Cheika Select” outfit up against a best of Super Rugby squad. The Super Rugby squad will be c0-coached by Australian 7s coaches John Manenti and Tim Walsh with further support by Kevin Foote of the Rebels.

While the match will be full contact, the intent of the game is more than just ensuring the players remember how to tackle and be tackled.

“It’s not just about the contact, because you can get all that in training. But just the little things. The pressure in front of a crowd, the referee telling you what to do, the dressing room build up, all those things. The mental side of footy,” Cheika said.

In other positive news, there will be no TMO for the match!! And while the match will be free, a gold coin donation for the Australian Rugby Foundation is encouraged with all proceeds going to grassroots rugby.

Possible teams for the match could be:

Michael Cheika XV:

15 Tom Banks, 14 Dane Haylett-Petty, 13 Reece Hodge, 12 Duncan Paia’aua, 11 Marika Koroibete, 10 Hamish Stewart, 9 Will Genia, 8 Caleb Timu, 7 David Pocock, 6 Lukhan Tui, 5 Adam Coleman, 4 Izack Rodda, 3 Taniela Tupou, 2 Brandaon Paenga-Amosa, 1 Scott Sio

Super Rugby XV:

15 Jack Maddocks, 14 Sefa Naivalu, 13 Jordan Petaia, 12 Billy Meakes, 11 Andy Muirhead, 10 Mack Mason, 9 Joe Powell, 8 Isi Naisarani, 7 Liam Wright, 6 Matt Phillip, 5 Rory Arnold, 4 Harry Hockings, 3 Allan Alaalotoa, 2 Folau Faingaa, 1 Tetera Faulkner

Love this idea, it’s very exciting. Not sure why they haven’t tried to use the Barbarians brand for this though

    • disqus_NMX

If the B side is called the Super Rugby XV, then it pre-empts any calls for any Force players to be picked.

      • juswal

        and excludes Quade Cooper

        • Brian Ko

Mack Mason??? Why not throw Quade Cooper in and I’m sure the B team would give the Wallabies a run for their money.

        • RugbyReg

Mack is currently training with the Wallaby squad

        • Mitch Leach

Reg, not having a crack at you as you probably copy/pasted, but what’s the story with the growing trend of naming fullbacks first and finishing with the props?? Or the even more absurd englsih style of naming 15-9, then 1-8 ??!!?? Just go 1-15 in numerical order!! Its gone and thrown my whole weekend out!

        • RugbyReg

hey mate, nah, understand. Sully hates it too.

It is how I was brought up. All the match programs I remember reading from the early 80s onwards always started at fullback and worked down. I assume they like to save the best until last.

        • Mitch Leach

“….best till last”…. now THAT is an answer I can live with! Maybe a throwback to when rugby fullbacks were still numbered 1, and when they changed numbers the media still wanted to list the fullback first?

        • GO THE Q REDS

Probably because Stewart’s progressing a little slow for a wallaby lvl player ATM.

        • Bernie Chan

Think RA is using the ‘no one playing in club finals rugby will be considered…’ as the reason. The Magpies are in the top-4 in Brisbane Premier Rugby…and scoring some cracking tries. Their winger Waqavulagi (?) is a seriously dangerous ball runner…and some mug flyhalf is giving him space to move.

        • Archie

Haha yeah I think Quade’s headin’ home to trial for the Tokoroa 1st division team.

    • Ian

It is nice to make it something typically Australian, The Barbarians are a beast of their own, I think make it an annual thing as a last ditch possibles v probables.

Plus it gives the journeymen type players that whole “I was a Wallabies Trialist” ego boost. Like every kiwi to touch a football was an all blacks trialist during the mid 90’s.

      • Nutta

The amount of “Awl Blick Trialists” I was told I had to ‘look out for Bro’ was simply astounding…

        • Ian

And in the end, they had no actual rugby nous, but were just the one guy that was most likely to stomp on your face in a ruck. A fundamental all black skill at the time.

  • Awesome news. Reminds me of the old “Australia A” days.

  • Gallagher

Cheika’s 15 as theorised above would waltz in a win… def watching this one!

    • Christopher

I reckon backs are evenly matched. Forwards bit more clear as to an advantage to Cheikas XV

      • Reinforce

Interesting – I thought the opposite. I liked the SRXV forward pack. Backs seemed to green to threaten

      • disqus_NMX

I have Cheikas ahead in the forwards and the halves.

    • Pedro

I think they’re not that different, especially as without the tahs there’s a lot of untested combinations in Cheika’s

      • Brumby Runner

Nah, those sides look to me to be a near international side v a Super Rugby side. Think the A team would win by 6 or 7 tries.

It might make for a better trial to mix them up a bit more.

    • Who?

Tell you what, I’m not sure you’d need many Tahs in that ‘Cheika’ team to make it a top choice Wallaby team… That’s a pretty strong team! I wouldn’t be unhappy if that was the starting pack in the Bledisloe. A few stronger backs..?
Also an amazing illustration of the lack of depth at 13 due to injury (poor Tom English).

      • Gallagher

At the risk of generating wrath (and I do like Hooper), but it’s strangely refreshing to see two big backrowers to compliment pocock at 7 as the best fetcher

  • Nutta

Good. Great. Play. Earn spots. Pick. Pity it’s not at Penrith but Leichhardt oval is a great place to play. Great stuff. Kudos to the originator.

    • Andy

Agree. This is a great move from the ARU. Top community ground, free entry, something to play for.

  • Missing Link

    fingers crossed for no injuries

    • Who?

This carries less weigh than last year’s BaaBaa’s match – it’ll be interesting to see what happens if we get another Dempsey, given all the complaints about that.

  • A Dingo Stole My Rugby

Can any XV really, truly be a Cheika XV if it’s devoid of Waratahs?

    • Bobas

He’ll put Powell in 6 so he can have the golden locks and effectiveness of his new Mumm.

  • Stin

    No TPN?

    • Bobas

Surely this match falls outside the International window

  • Stin

    No TPN?

  • Andy

Would be shit for guys like LLF, Deegan and Debreczini having Mack picked ahead of you without any Rep game time.

    • IIPA

Tom English must feel somewhat similar re Petaia

      • GO THE Q REDS

English has been nowhere consistently this year.

  • SuckerForRed

As you have named it Reg I like that Michael Cheika XV, but I would expect Cheika will name Hodge at 10. Isn’t that where he see him?

  • Jimmydubs

This would’ve been good when they could’ve picked poss vs probs from 5 sides. Picking 2 teams out of 4 with 1 unavailable. Don’t get me wrong could be a good game but seems pointless having the best 66% of players from the 3 worst super clubs?!

  • How come no kuridrani? Is he injured?

    • Who?

Pec/shoulder (?) injury tackling Naiyaravoro at 77 minutes in the last game of the Super season… :-(
Horrible way to finish a game where he otherwise proved himself to be the standard against which all other Aussie 13’s still must be measured.

      • Will he be back for some of RC?

        • Who?

I’m pretty sure they said it was 3 months. :-(

  • Number 12

And still a 70+ test player & 110+ Super Rugby player can’t get a look in! Even with the favoured Son not there to be shown up!

    • GO THE Q REDS

Too true and another sad day. A perfect opportunity to prove their point one would think.

  • The Blind Seer

Does anybody know if BYO will be allowed at the ground or is there some sort of food and drink outlet?

The original prop in a prop's body, but thankfully I have the rugby mind of a prop as well.
