Rugby Podcast Episode 160: Wallaby defence and NRC attack

It’s fire side chat time. Brett McKay, Hugh Cavill and Rugby Reg get together to chat about the best Wallaby performance of the year – our heartbreaking loss to the Springboks in Cape Town.

Putting that behind us, we then celebrate all things NRC. Oh and how we celebrate. We talk players, coaches, officials, marketing, crowds, broadcast, live streaming and the future. If you’re a fan or a critic, have a listen and give us your view below.

  • Kate Elizabeth

Could we look at how the different teams are promoted and run and if you guys think that makes a difference in crowd numbers and exposure? Eg QRU looks after both the Queensland teams where most (if not all the other teams) are independently promoted. Should the other state bodies have a greater hand in running and promoting their state teams, using their existing platforms and channels to maximise awareness rather than leaving them to fend for themselves? Has this dented attendance and awareness or are we just control freaks north of the border?

  • Vinnie Gorham

I’m working with the Rays media and it has been pretty hard building our social media from scratch as we don’t have a super rugby team with 100K+ fans to help us along like the interstate teams have. We also do not have the funds for live streaming especially when viewing numbers were sitting below 200 for the game on Sunday, having 3 NRC games on at the same time certainly did not help…

    • RugbyReg

Vinnie, how much does live streaming cost per game, any ideas?

      • Brett McKay

        We should’ve discussed this Reg!
I had early indications that NRC streams could be done in the $2000-6000 range, depending on number of cameras, whether you want commentary, graphics, replays, etc.
But then I’ve also heard that the set-up the Rams used might have been less than $2000, which is an absolute bargain if that’s the case..

        • RugbyReg

Brett, make a note and we will discuss it in October 2015 when you are next on.

        • Brett McKay

          Funny because it’s true…

      • Vinnie Gorham

Depends on your equipment and how many cameras/ cameramen you have. The guys I was working with were saying they would charge somewhere between $2,500 and $4,000 depending on all the above and more

      • Rob McKay

Someone was doing Shute Shield this year for under $2K (can’t recall their name to save my life, but they were covering the non ABC matches). Also, Bar TV were doing selected subbies matches (as referee, I was wired for their sound) and I’m not even sure if they were charging at all – rather making the money from the venues taking the feed (sound familiar?). Might be worth a chat with them.

        • Vinnie Gorham

Club rugby tv I think, And they are covering NSW country vs Stars on Monday

        • Rob McKay

          That’s them.

        • Bay35Pablo

          Club rugby TV?
Why not do a livestream paid got by a sponsor and put their name on the whole game … ?

    • Bay35Pablo

Firstly haven’t tahs been able to help? The reds seem to have supported their 2 teams well but then are running them directly.
Secondly with respect I haven’t been that impressed with the rays social media profile. As shown by my throwing stones at times on twitter. A social media policy is more than just posting stuff on FB and twitter. Early on even that was limited but has improved. However it needs to build engagement. Photos of best dressed fans. Best heckle comp etc. they have had some caption the photo comps recently which has been a good start. I have dove my best on twitter to build some heckle with example rams and stars fans or twitter feeds. Just because I’m an annoying bastard at heart.
The whole team is run on the smell if any oily rag. And with a lot of volunteers. But at times it shows. But the rams seem to have done a better job with less fans. I would love to help but simply don’t gave the time currently. Hopefully thus is all learning and preparing for next year. I am even a bit wary of possibly moving from brookie to NSO even though closer to me as I can see it could make it harder for Northern beaches fans.
But have been loving the NRC. Even if fox seem to have given it even less marketing than the ARU …. Why not sell your product?!?! Anyone seem an NRC ad?

      • Vinnie Gorham

I’m a Mac Uni student doing my Prac with the Rays, don’t get paid unfortunately. The caption comps surprise surprise were my idea, as well as the live scrore updates and the pictures taken during the games and thrown on facebook. We have the least amount of fans on facebook which is a shame but I am doing my best to help
Our website crashed the other day which didn’t help.

        • Bay35Pablo

Well keep up the good work. Blokes like you help build teams like the RAYS. personally I follow Twitter more than FB mowadays, but eh focus seems to be on FB. I suppose as it can better host and link some content. I also saw the web site crashed at bad time.

        • Bay35Pablo

Good news. We are just ahead of the Stars on FB likes …. :)

  • Pedro

I think the NRC product is sound, promotion just needs improvement. The ARU could do a lot more especially on social media.

It’s a crying shame that so few games are able to be watched live, particularly when there are no legal hurdles to streaming the non Thursday games. The ARU should be doing a lot better, it’s just a huge wasted opportunity to get people seeing great rugby.

I also wonder whether it could have been starting about now and be going on well after the NRL and RC.

    • Vinnie Gorham

Streaming numbers and social media traffic in general were affected when the un official NRC facebook page was removed. They shot themselves in the foot

  • Vinnie Gorham

I’m going to attempt an NRC triple header this long weekend and get to Vikings v Rays on Thursday night, head back to Sydney on Friday for the Rams v Brisbane and then head over to Leichart Oval on Monday to watch Stars vs NSW Country… Should be an interesting weekend! If only the NRC had one round with all Sydney teams hosting and all the Wallabies returned to squads. Could even have two double headers at Allianz or Concord oval on seperate days. Maybe next year in the final round?

  • Bill

275 tackles apparently.100 extra than them. That’s a helluva lot to redress as a replacement.

  • Bill

    i want hooper at 12.

    • Bill

If Toomua’s out I should have said.

  • The Rant

    Quality chat. Cheers.

  • Rob McKay

Quick question – looking for this podcast in iTunes and no sign of it (nor the last couple either). What’s doing?

    • RugbyReg

will look into it Rob. I have no idea.

      • Mart

The last couple were. It’s just this one hasn’t come up yet.
Actually scrap that it’s there now
        Do a podcast refresh

        • Rob McKay

Found it – thanks. Bloody iTunes – intuitive – yeah, right. It doesn’t come up when searching under “GAGR” in the search box – go figure.

  • fatprop

Can we have less stereo podcast? I had just one earphone in and I thought the thing was broken

    • RugbyReg

that sounds awefully technical….Just when I get on top of one issue, someone raises another….leave it with me and I will ask the experts (not Hugh or Brett).

      • Da Munch

I enjoyed the stereo and they sound really good now without the gliches – thanks for putting it together.

  • Mart

Totally agree with you Reg on Jack Debreczeni. I watched him for the first time against perth and he had a quality game. He has an all round game. Really solid future if he continues that form

  • Brett McKay

I don’t want to alarm people, but something we speculated on has come true!

Sean Maloney from Fox Sports has just said this on Twitter:

“Yeah BABEEEH! @FOXSportsAUS covering @BrisCity_NRC v @uc_vikings as part of Bledisloe 3 Double header. @BuildcorpNRC”

    • Vinnie Gorham

Just what the NRC needs! Lets hope they pull a decent crowd and show the Gold Coast how it’s done

    • Vinnie Gorham

Why do they insist on having over an hour gap between the NRC game on the Wallabies vs All Blacks…..

      • Hugh Cavill

Think it’s a SANZAR requirement that the ground be free for an hour before the game, to allow teams to warm up.

        • Brett McKay

          IRB requirement, I’m pretty sure…

        • Vinnie Gorham

As long as they get more then 300 people by half time like at the Gold Coast…

        • Vinnie Gorham

People will stay in the pubs drinking and eating reasonably priced goods and watch the NRC game on the telly

      • RugbyReg

there’s no warm up field at Suncorp. The players actually have to warm up on the field. Common sense really.

  • YBT

This may have already been discussed, but 2 two converted tries SHOULD be worth more than 3 unconverted. We need to developed 80-90% kickers in this country, and have needed that for a while. The current arrangement encourages positive attacking play, and solidifies the value of those blokes who are high quality kickers.

    • harro

      I agree 100%

The original prop in a prop's body, but thankfully I have the rugby mind of a prop as well.
