Rugby Report Card 100 – New Beginning

Blake and Richard get the new rugby season started. Discussing the changes that occur after a World Cup year.

  • Philip Timmins

Can we elevate the tone a little? Perhaps a little less of the F-ing?

    • Tomthusiasm

Are you new to the internet?

    • Ian

      its fu***ng disgraceful really.

    • Huw Tindall

Probably find another pod mate. This is pub chat with mates who know more than the average fan.

    • Brisneyland Local

Hmmmmm. Me think if you struggle with the Rugby Report card guys, you may find the language here a little Blue. Especially if I am involved. ;-)

Great to see you guys back. Been hanging out for you to come back.
Good post but I’m still concerned you’re relying on the x-factor special to resolve the problems.
Disagree 100% on Beale. Beale is a proven loser and will be an atrocious 10 for both the Tahs and Wallabies. How the hell the Tahs picked him at VC is beyond me. I’m picking he’s not in the Wallabies at the end of the year

    • Reds Revival

I have to agree with you KRL. I will be very surprised if Beale is part of Rennie’s new world order.

    • Huw Tindall

Rob Penney has already said he wants players to play what’s in front of them. Same things Dean’s said back in day. No surprise they are both from the Canterbury system. I agree KB would be a disaster at 10 where you need to be organised but in terms of an instinctive player he is up there with the best. Could be the second coming of KB. Or just as equally his last season and then he sees out retirement in Japan. As always I’m optimistic!

      • Crescent

I feel like Penney has inherited a bit of a shit show – Gibson’s timing means it feels like it is kind of a half baked squad. The performance of the tight five in supporting the ball carrier is a real concern, and has been for a while. Nice to see some great touches from the backs in the Highlanders trial match, but if the support is not there once into contact, possession is lost and all the momentum gained changes hands.

In my view, KB was at his best coming off the pine and injecting some energy and spark against a tiring opposition, and openly have to wonder why he is being touted as the starting 10. I don’t think he is the best choice, the form choice, nor will starting him there assist in resolving the question of who the form 10 will be for the Wallabies, or getting Mason significant time to demonstrate his ability.

Will be interesting to see what we get come Round 1, and will watch this weekends trial with great interest

        • Huw Tindall

Yeah not ideal. Hore buggering off at short notice didn’t help. Watching the Reds trial now and looking like they are picking up where they left off. Reds also looking handy in attack! Bring on Round 1!

Always good to be optimistic mate. I just can’t see how he can almost change his game around 100%. I don’t think he’s instinctive so much as a guy who plays best from broken play as that creates holes. In the structured set pieces he struggles because defences are so well set, but once play becomes broken you get try’s like that one he scored in Dunedin. I think he’ll struggle at 10 because he lacks distribution skills and vision

    • Brisneyland Local

Helloo old chap. You have to change your Avatar now to Kiwi / Aussie Rugby Lover now that you are an Aussie citizen.
Agree 100% on Beale, A waist of time and I would have torn up his contract and used the money to hire 2 or 3 up and coming juniors.
Correct on the VC. Here as part of the leadership group we are going to put the man with the worst bahvioural record in Australian Rugby! WTF

      • Kiwi rugby lover

I was thinking of that. My wife calls me a Kwaussie so maybe Kwaussie rugby lover

        • Brisneyland Local

Works for me. How is the DMZ going?

        • KwAussie Rugby Lover

Pretty cool. Up there again on Thursday. It’s friggen surreal

  • Reds Revival

So glad to see you guys back (even if it is without Jim on his T-Shirt hunting safari). In my post World Cup void, I listened to a few of your old podcasts, and even back 2 years ago, you ran a train on Ned Hanigan. Absolutely loved Jim’s comment that Ned hadn’t decided if he wanted to surf or play rugby! Phillip, I was a bit like you initially and almost turned off after the first 15 minutes, but so glad that I stuck with it, This is my favourite rugby podcast that is both entertaining and thought provoking. Boys, keep up the great work, I look forward to hearing each new pod!

Welcome back guys, the best rugby podcast in the land.
Just some info, I may be wrong but the RA have put the broadcast rights out to tender as Foxtel have forecast a much lower $ figure.

So it may end up at Optus but nothing written in stone yet, Foxtel may come to the party, but you have to wonder on the day they launch Super rugby they lay of Nick Mcardle from the commentary team and no mid week program.

  • Huw Tindall

Fuark rugby is back! Re the Optus chat the media rights haven’t been decided yet. Arguably Castle’s biggest challenge to date is the media rights deal. Optus made a big hop hah last year about going for it and Fox are certainly on the nose so who knows. At least it’s a competitive bid! Hopefully FTA gets a proper go as well.
