Rugby Report Card 61 – Decimation

The boys discuss the final round of the International Series and the role of the TMO.

WARNING – may contain lots of swearing

With Latu, when he’s good he’s very good, but he’s always very close to giving away the penalty, because of that he’s very volatile.

    • Brumby Runner

Agree. We didn’t lose too much having Samu on for Hooper, but we would lose a lot more if Pocock had to leave the field. He seems to be regarded world-wide, except in the country, as the premier No 7 in rugby.

      • D. Braithwaite’s The Brumbies

I think it is more accurate to say he’s regarded by most outside of NSW and the Fox sport commentary team as the best no. 7 in World Rugby.

        • Andy

I would say most in NSW. And that’s not a criticism of Hooper.

      • Jason

Yeah, spot on, anyone who isn’t a Waratah pretty much know’s Pocock is the one who should be ‘my captain for the 2019 RWC’, if there is to be a choice between Pocock and Hooper everyone except Cheika know’s 100% Pocock and unless Tui works out at 6 (and he legit could be a World XV 6 if he works out), we really need to be picking only one of Pocock and Hooper and it sure as hell shouldn’t be Pocock going to the bench. Even if were selecting Tui at 6 Timu, Valetini, or Naisarani should be strongly considered for the starting 8 spot. It’s going to be a genuine question if Hooper is in the 23 yet because he’s ‘my captain till the 2019 RWC’ you can’t do anything but have him in your XV.

Cheika really is just picking his favourites and clearly has zero in the way of long term planning. What’s he going to do if Foley goes down injured, it’s madness.

        • D. Braithwaite’s The Brumbies

If Foley is injured Beale will move to 10 and Kerevi to 12.

I honestly don’t know if it will hurt us. Maybe we will even improve..

        • Jason

Yeah, look I think given Foley’s most recent form I think it’s actually an improvement.

        • Hugh Cavill

‘Cheika really is just picking his favourites and clearly has zero in the way of long term planning.’

What a ridiculous thing to say. Of course he’s picking his favourites – he’s the coach. That’s the point.

I don’t know how anyone can look at that series and say we have an issue with selection. It was the one thing we undeniably got right, especially in the forward pack. We had physicality and mobility without compromising our set piece.

        • D. Braithwaite’s The Brumbies

‘It was the one thing we undeniably got right’

I really don’t think it is ‘undeniable’. I will agree that the forwards mostly did well, although I question why someone like Simmons would be on the bench. Not an impact player. He either starts or doesn’t make the 23 in my mind.

As for playing people’s favourites – Perese is one of my favourite players. I still wouldn’t pick him in a Wallabies 23 though.

Mostly I think selections were on point though. Although some question marks over the backline.

    • D. Braithwaite’s The Brumbies

Latu is very hot and cold, yes. For that reason I can see BPA or Uelese remaining ahead of him in the pecking order.

      • Jason

Yeah, Latu is a penalty magnet — both ways. For this reason I think Latu will be kept as a bench player at best. Plus my real concern is at no point did BPA actually have a poor performance yet was yanked at halftime twice. He scored a try (but for the penalty try), he is terribly consistent and while not flashy I think he’s an ideal option for the starting hooking spot. I really do question if we need TPN’s services anymore, are we expecting to play the 40 year old in the RWC — Cheika’s selections ~~sometimes~~ all the time are absolute madness!
He should have been finding Jake Gordon and Joe Powell test rugby time so we didn’t end up with Powell being in the situation we are in. And how the fuck is it we are playing Phipps when he’s not even starting for his Super side…

        • Hugh Cavill

I love it how when Powell screws up it’s Cheika’s fault – ‘he really needed more Test time’. But when Phipps screws up he’s an idiot who can’t pass.

Powell threw a couple of shocking passes on Saturday. He’s a professional halfback who should do better, it’s that simple.

        • D. Braithwaite’s The Brumbies

          Read this:

          https://www.theroar.com.au/2018/06/27/a-rugby-riddle-for-today-what-has-a-backbone-but-no-spine/

Don’t think it is necessarily true Phipps outplayed Powell at all, and this is despite the benefit of 60 tests.

        • Jason

Yeah, the difference is Nick Phipps 29 and has 60 odd test caps. Joe Powell had 3 caps and less than a half of test Rugby under his belt…

Yes Powell wasn’t very good, actually really disappointing actually, but this is why we need to be finding time for our young guys off the bench, maybe Jake Gordon will just have it click at test level, or Joe Powell will hit that 10 cap mark and he’ll just figure it out. Took Genia 3 or 4 tests last year (I was actually calling for him to be replaced by Phipps he was playing that poorly), then it just clicked, now obviously with Genia you know he’s capable of playing at that level Powell and Gordon haven’t ever shown half the class Genia has but we need to be exploring those options where we can. If Nick Phipps doesn’t play for 3 tests he’ll perform identically in the 4th as to how he would have in the 1st, he’s an old head and and steady hand, we should be using games like those against Argentina to explore a little more our options in a few of those key positions.

Japan, Italy, Argentina we should be trying out perhaps 2 or 3 players/positions against these teams, even something like Beale at 10 against Japan would have been a good option.

Only use TMO to review a try. Maximum 2 phases back.
    Anything else put on report.
TMO cannot interject on their own

  • Facthunt

Fully agree on the stadium observations…what a joke. Don’t even have to be waiting for beer for it to not work…. everyone gets farked. Lines were 30mins long across the board for the entire game.
To add insult to injury, you then have to pay 15x the usual price for your chosen food and drink.
Fitzy, pull your head in, get out of the corporate box, and watch a game where the stadium is actually full with the rest of us.
