Just when it seems the Reds machine may hit a hurdle playing the Stormers without a vastly experienced lock, they announce the signing of the great Radike Samo.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Australian-Fijian Wallaby Lock/Blind-side Flanker. He played 35 games for the Brumbies (when they were good) from 2000-2005 and earned Wallaby selection in 2004. He traveled after that and had stints in Europe and Japan. Samo was best known for his blinding speed for a 111kg lock and outrages plays whilst holding the ball in one of his giant mitts.

Amazingly Reds coach Ewen McKenzie had been on a mission to land(sign) Samo ever since James Horwill ruptured his knee when the Reds gave the Crusaders the only loss they have suffered this year thus far. That was way back in the second week. So its only coincidental Samo is coming back just as Van (FC-bomb) Humphries has been ruled out through injury.

This is what Link has been quoted to have said about the signing.

“We always knew we’d be walking a bit of a tightrope in the lock position until we found cover for James for the rest of the year and we’d been lucky so far not to get caught short,”

“But with Van injured, Radike’s arrival has come at the right time.”

“Having more depth at lock will help immensely with some of the big games ahead and adding his experience to the squad will also be invaluable.”

Talk about another stroke of genius by Link McKenzie… Can this man do no wrong?

First he cut his wallaby jersey sleeves off on the particular side to make it difficult for the other prop to bind. Then he covered himself in pig fat to make himself harder to grab hold of whilst on the playing field. Now he’s landed Australia’s most exciting lock and put him in Australia’s most exciting team the exact same week the desperately need him. Pure genius.

Now for all those Samo and Brumby fans its time to remember one of the great plays he did in super rugby. Jump this video to 5:13 and watch the 111kg lock burn Sivivatu.

twas Tony Daly wasn’t it? Can’t remember link doing it.

    • Shmetails Noddy!

Isn’t there a story about Samo cutting off one of his toes to get into the Wallaby squad?

      • Bobas

you’re thinking of wacky tawake and his index finger.

    • Coatsie

Definitely, in the RWC 91 Final v’s England. Dales not the Link.

Link scored the try too that Dales’ was credited for…

(Eroneous, but that’s just my opinion…)

Oh look it brings tears to my eyes seeing Giteau at 12 and he is running. I miss it so Giteau running and he is smiling dont see that much on the field anymore. Samo will be good for the REDS too.

Nice to see him back in the Shute Shield over eh weekend… jeez i hope the Reds paid big time for an ex-Brumby… i look forward to seeing him at Canberra Stadium in coming weeks…

  • awesome signing, one of my favourite players. Lets hope his form is sufficient to bump Sharpe out of the Wallabies

    • Reddy!

Fatprop is going to give you a talkin’ to!

      Sharpe = Best Australian lock

Samo = will be lucky to be on the bench for the Reds

      • Noddy

I can’t see it happening either to be honest (being in the 22). Unless Link really has given up on Byrnes.

  • Reddy!

In other news, how awesome were the Brumbies that night against the Crusaders, amazing.

    • Bobas

First try reminded me a little of that higginbotham one.

George Smith break down steal. Larkham hoof down feild.

Wicked bounce beat the fullback and Rathbone and Roff struggled it over the line.

A pretty useful back line – Gregan, Larkham, Giteau, Mortlock, Gerrard, Rathbone, Roff – all at just about the best form of their careers.

Looking at it now, you have to wonder how come they had no injuries at the end of the season?

WOW!… Never thought the day of seeing Radike back on Aussie soil would come… Great great great news!… Time to add another paragraph to the recent post of ‘whose going to replace Palu in the Wallabies’ I think!

  • I’m pretty sure Samo will do great with reds, it is nice to see him back on the field.

Samo will need to improve a lot from last weekend. He looked unfit in the shute shield game and gave away aheap of penalties. He also set up a try though so he still has the X factor.

  • Pedro

His one handed style will perfectly compliment quade’s reach around.
