Sevens Heaven – The best ever Aussie 7s team

Sevens Heaven – The best ever Aussie 7s team

Wing: David Campese

Campo in his prime – there wasn’t a better finishing winger that I’ve seen. He just knew how to get over that try line. But also his support lines were a class above. The lines he ran, he put himself in such good support positions. That and his reading of the game was very rare. He also played a lot of sevens for Australia and for Randwick at the Melrose Sevens, so he had that in depth level of understanding of the game.

Some great choices in there – really hard to dispute. Always thought that Horan and Giteau would be brilliant 7’s players. They just seemed SO competitive as well.

“…What I look for is someone without weaknesses in any part of their game…”

    First player picked? Campo!
Great team but this amused me. Good read Reg!

Ha! I must admit I thought similar, but Campo was a smart defender. Perhaps not the best or most committed, but I remember during the 91 RWC in particular he pulled off some really important ones.

“As a player who could beat a man he’s unbeatable” – that makes my head hurt….

    • Noizey

Probably why he had Gits sweeping.

  • As far as future greats go, I’d love to see Israel Folau, Quade Cooper, Michael Hooper & Henry Speight in our Olympics 7’s team. I think we’d be decent medal chances with that much speed and man beating skill on the park.

That squad would certainly take some beating, although I guess NZ and Fiji could pick a decent all-time squad too.
Shows you what a different game sevens is,I have followed rugby for a bloody long time but have never heard of Cameron Pither yet Snoz rates him as the best ever.
I still remember vividly going to my first HK 7’s and hearing the crowd really give it to Campo. He certainly generated interest!

no women’s 7s at this Com Games as the World Cup is about to start. They will be at the Gold Coast Com Games though

Pleasing to see Matt Hodgson get the recognition he deserves. In great company here.

The original prop in a prop's body, but thankfully I have the rugby mind of a prop as well.
