After 15 years playing professional rugby, 146 Super Rugby games for the Brumbies & Rebels and 80 tests for the Wallabies (including 29 as Captain) Stirling Mortlock retired from the game recently after his last game for the Rebels against the Stormers.

From all of us at Green & Gold Rugby, congratulations on a wonderful career Stirling.  Here are some of the highlights from that wonderful career.

I used to play against Stirling in colts. Biggest kick, biggest hitter i’d ever seen. I remember thinking this guy is going to be a wallaby the moment he broke our outside centres collarbone tossing him like a rag doll. Absolute bull.

      Darn tootin’

      Born warrior / rugby player.

  • inkosi

    Great highlight reel Scott.

How far along is cloning? Because fark we could use a young Stirlo again!

    P Divvy @ 1:24

This tackle on Riki Flutey is still one of my favorites of all time, just a pure hard, textbook tackle.

  • DC.

His dominating tackle on Riki Flutey is still one of my favorites of all time, just a classic textbook tackle.

    2003 – the intercept!

    Immortal!

  • suckerforred

That brings a tear to the eyes. And I’m with inkosi – can we please clone him!!!

  • Henry

Great 10 minutes. Anyone else have a stupid grin on their face for that entire video? One thing that he always seems to be doing in the highlights is hitting the ball and the line at such pace- something the present Wallabies could do a little bit better.

  • Guy

All very well… but this would be better titled career tries compendium. There is nothing exciting about falling over the line. You culd probably call it larkhams highlight real if anything!

    • Barbarian

Well how about you knock one up yourself Guy.

What a great video Scott. I’m glad some people can at least appreciate the time and effort that went in to constructing it.

Now the inevitable question must arise- would you have Stirlo at 13 in an all-time Wallaby XV? Not sure he would get in there, but you’d probably have him on the bench…

      • robbo

Provided Horan was picked 12, he would be my No 13. Great video

      • commonasmud

Barbar – to be fair to Guy, it does highlight what a great 10 Bernie was. But I agree with inkosi, we could do with his clone at 13 right about now.

    Goosebumps! Fantastic video!

I got Stirlo’s autograph in 2000 when the team called into Perth on the way to SA when he first starting playing for the Wallabies (I think it was the tour when he kicked the winning points from the sideline – anyone?). He seemed genuinely surprised that I recognized him and wanted his autograph. I explained that it was for my son – I figured that if I ever had a son, he would definitely want it. Maybe one day I should hand it over….or perhaps I might just leave it in the will.

    Love your work Stirlo!

A true legend. we will probably never see another like him. Thanks for the vid

  • RedAnt

Great vid, Austin. And a great player. Particularly loved the ‘welcome to rugby’ he gave SBW.

  • Mart

    Great Vid Scott!!

Fark me the pass from Larkham at 1min47secs is sublime

Geez we pump out 7′s but hard running, hard hitting 13′s have all but disappeared since Stirlo

  • johnny-boy

For his tackling, goal kicking, line breaking power, captaincy and fearless passion to win I’d say he was the best the Wallabies have ever fielded at 13.

  • Mart

Geez he was a hard man to stop once he got a sniff of the try line

  • Ruggo

    Cheers for the video Scott.

Morty is quite frankly a great and history will remember him as such. Thanks for the memories as they are something special.

  • Skip

defence like that is so valuable to a team. For my money, whenever possible one back’s tackling should put the frightners on the other team.

I’ve been waiting for this vid since it was mentioned on the podslam.

  • Nipper

Awesome. Thanks for that Scotty! I had forgotten about many of those highlights – not only the hard running and hitting the line at pace, but the clutch goalkicking as well. I had also forgotten that he once had hair!

Maybe someone should show that video to Rob Horne and tell him “do THIS”!

  • Danny

Always felt better when he ran out for the Wallabies. Was he unavailable for the last World Cup?

    • Kurt

I think he may have been stuck with looking after his grandkids!!

Nah, jokes. Bless you Stirlo, enjoy retirement!

  • mudskipper

Stirling effort… what a great rugby career… I always enjoyed watching Stirlo play… Thanks for all the great rugby, I remember watching many of the Stirling moments with some of my best mates, great memories thanks Stirling… All the best

Thanks to the team who put together the highlight video of the rugby wizard Mortlock…

  • Old Weary

Is that Peter De Villers in the crowd at 1:24 !

  • mikey

    Such a unit.

    @D.C,
The irony is that nowadays that tackle on Flutey would be deemed a spear tackle! Rugby’s gone to the dumps i tell you!
