This just makes me more depressed with our current performances

More like, a last sip before a walk across the desert.

Nice work timing the ball hitting Gilbert’s head with the music.
How long did it take you get that right?

    • http://www.greenandgoldrugby.com/ Matt Rowley

Just the one or two DAYS

  • tigerland12

Also KB needs to get fit again. He featured in over half the plays in that video. Imagine if he was still playing that well.

  • Patrick

Even for the rebels he was awesome at five-eighth.

I to want too see him in that form again!

maybe to get there he needs to be banned from chip/grubber kicking for a few games.

  • Sharpey

    What has happened to us?!

    • http://www.greenandgoldrugby.com/ Matt Rowley

A few commenters have mentioned the amount of chip kicking etc, but my biggest takeaways are:

      1) Our kick return and counter-attack were vital – where have they gone?

      2) Beale’s fast feet were incredible. He know looks like me doing an impression of him

  • boutbloodytime

That can’t ALL be down to injuries & it can’t ALL be down to Deans…as much as I’m not a fan of his, how can one team go from sublime play like that to such poor performances in the blink of an eye?

It’s almost like the world cup came along & we chucked out an attractive, exciting & winning style of rugby, full of confidence, that had every other team looking at our backline play especially & thinking, “Holy crap, I hope they don’t unleash that on us” to the keystone cops meets the 3 stooges style of play we have today.

Stick the Wallabies in Baa Baas jerseys & hopefully they’ll get back to playing the all running, expansive (ie: not kicking away possession at every opportunity) style of game we’ve come to know & love.

As much as I loved watching the 2010 Mashup, repeatedly, it’s just bloody upsetting to see how far backwards we’ve gone since then.

    • sph45

Wow. I love rugby so much.

Agree BBT – the world cup was a turning point towards terrible. What happened?

Perhaps Deans should just stick to his earlier, admittedly simplistic advice – have the confidence to “play what’s in front of you”?

    • Red Kev

Of course the world cup came along and we chucked out all attacking, attractive rugby.
Deans got scared for his job, decided we needed to play defensively and installed McCabe and Faingaa/Horne as his preferred centre pairing.
Look who is playing 12 in every one of those clips – Giteau or Barnes.
Deans spent 4 years playing 2 playmakers and then in 2011 he installed the most limited centre pairing the Wallabies have ever fielded and picked unfit players continually (fully 25% of the RWC squad was “recovering from injury” when named).

      • Mart

Yep. And Giteau was fully fit to play 12 in the cup. But we took a 3rd half back instead

      • Colonel Smouch

Yep. Just feels like we are trying to play a style of game that doesn’t suit us. I am looking at you Mr Deans.

Identity crisis? Rather than trying to out All Black the All Blacks or whatever it is we are trying to do we should embrace the style that has made us successful in the past and just be really, really good at being ourselves.

I agree that the game moves and changes along with rules and refereeing interpretations however the core values of what makes Wallabies Rugby great should still remain. At the moment that is missing in my view – coached out perhaps?

  • Colonel Smouch

Awesome vid. What the hell has happened over the past 2 years? It is interesting that we have access to the same players (injury not withstanding) but so much has changed.

    A couple of observations:
    1. KB really is very, very good. Please come back.
    2. AAC is easily our best 13
    3. Drew Mitchell when fit is outstanding

To many players either injured or out of form at the moment.

Need a stiff drink after that….

  • Westo

I’m pumped – I’m going to the gym

  • Coodabeenawesome

Awesome!! AAC passed the ball!! It does work!

  • Tipsy

My favourite bits were when we made a break and took the contact to set up the next phase, rather than chip kicking or grubbering. P.S. don’t let any Wallaby players watch that vid as several tries were scored by chips and grubbers).

    • Funk

The chip/grubber can be a great play, in the right place and right time during the game…eg not in your own 22 and not every time you get the ball.
Can the real KB please come back!

  • stillatragic

I’ve stopped crying now so I can respond. Great video. Where has our mojo gone? Is it left on the operating table with remnants of an ACL? Wasn’t it nice to see all those double digit numbers scoring tries, and AAC at his best at 13. Now I think I’ll have a lie down.

    • Patrick

I don’t understand why AAC was ever played anywhere but 13. Watching that really hammers it home.

  • Matt NT

The most obvious thing in the video was that the majority of line breaks came from running different angles and support play. Options is something sadly missing at the moment.

  • OOAAH

Bodies in motion and hands. Wonderful.

    • ooaahh

I’ll go so far as to say that I wouldn’t mind losing if we played like that all the time.

      • Mart

        Tell the Waratahs that

  • Gus

WOULD SOMEBODY GIVE OUR OUTSIDE BACKS SOME BALL IN SPACE!!

    • muffy

They do, they kick it in to “space” where even Usain Bolt would struggle to chase!

  • http://www.facebook.com/RebuildTheWaratahs hannibal

That video should be shown to the Wallabies before EVERY game!

Somebody remind them of how to play a team game and what a chamion team looks like.

How did standards fall so far from there. Something seems broken in today’s set up.

To me its the RWC curse. We were on a clear path in 2009/2010 and then compromised it totally to play a negative game for the RWC. We’ve never come back from that and I think the spirit of the team is damaged as their principles were compromised by that complete about face in game plans. Just look at the form of the players. Very few guys are still in the form (or bodies) they were in back in 2010.

    That says it all. STANDARDS!

  • smee_again

Terrific video,,,”Yesterday” by the Beatles may have been a good music as well.
Can anyone else think of an appropriate song title to match our current woes?

    Hey GAGR…Idea for a t-shirt :

    I am not an acloholic…
I only drink when the Wallabies kick….

  • Jets

We should try a get that young fit 15 back in the team.

The other thing I noticed was the work off the ball. Every time a break was made there were guys running support. these days it seems to be a case of stand and watch.

  • No1 Ranked

Hey wasn’t that a video of every wallabie highlight over the last 10years, wow a whole 4.52mins worth of it

  • Duncher

    we were good… what happened?

  • Joe Blow

AAC is the man for 13 and Kurtley Beale is just ridiculously good when fit and confident. Ditto for JOC and Schmoo.
It is pretty much the same bunch of players that appear to be out of sync right now.
Surprisingly Will Genia only features in one try in the vid. In the last year or so we have come to rely on him for making things happen in attack.
They are going to come good at some point, hopefully starting on Saturday.
Horne and McCabe were brought in to tighten up the centres at the expense of our attacking flair. How anyone cannot rate AAC at 13 is beyond me. When he is on song he is Mortlockesque.
If we have everyone on deck for the Lions series next year it will be good to watch. We have just had a horrific run with injury but have still managed to stay reasonably competitive.
    The tide will turn!

  • Snow

Fantastic montage, Matt. loved watching it.

Interesting to note the number of chip kicks in some of those tries. The difference to the current wasteful crop of chips is that these were done with open space behind the last defender… not with Dagg or Kirschner waiting to collect the grubber. We seem to have lost the ability to get the timing right. Sometimes now it just seems to be the “lazy” option, rather than just trucking it up when necessary and holding on to possession.

The flashy open space tries featured in the video are fantastic to watch, but what really gives me a hard-on are the long build-up tries of the old days, where we held on for 15+ phases to wear the opposition down and score when they just run out of numbers.

  • Mart

Dean’s should’ve been let go after the world cup change of tactics and failure.

  • Mart

    Farkin such a good vid!!!!

    • Mart

      Keep the dream alive fellas

  • Mart

Also this showed that Barnes is a good 12. Just gotta reset to running rugby

    • Red Kev

      Pre- concussion problems though.
I honestly believe he is worried about going into contact as a ball carrier.
When he’s the tackler it doesn’t phase him because he knows he can control where his head is in contact. When he is the tacklee he’s at the mercy of the guy putting the hit on and he’s still a little gun shy.

      • spectator

The try Barnes scored against Wales in the world cup play of, crashing through a gap off a Cooper pass, could possibly be the last best set-piece try the Wallabies have scored in the backs – & it was at the start of the game against fresh defence.

  • SUPERSTAR

Lik dis if u cry evrtime

  • Old Weary

47sec – the big man pumping his little legs to get the cover tackle… awesome!

  • Sammy

So many ppl asking “what happened to us” Simple. This was before the players started believing their own hype. There was no “brand O’Connor”, the media hadn’t yet begun to rave about how fantastic Cooper was, AAC didn’t play for the Warratahs … they were free to play without their egos getting in the way. Can’t wait for the Wallabies to get back to the top, without some of the dead wood they are carrying atm!

  • horror-tahs

We did an ‘All Blacks’…. peaked early and choked come world cup time. FML

  • Bally Moore

how good to see beale draw the man / take the tackle and pass.

  • Si_Rangi

Watching that I couldn’t help thinking what a loss Drew Mitchell is, and how devestating KB can be when fit.

  • T

And through the whole period this was happening people were moaning on forums the same way they are now.

Apparently the administrators are stupid, the coaches are stupid, and the players from every province but our own are hopeless.

We’re 2nd in the world, how about a bit of perspective!!

    • sph45

Partially agree. We had no perspective then and we have no flair now.

  • robbo

T – that’s what I was about to say. This vid could be twice as long juts with the tries against the French in Paris.

Sitting here in Samoa (working I might add) hoping that Samoan TV will show the game tomorrow night (early morning here). No one can tell me. They did show the game against SA last week but precedence is no guarantee – as I learned to my cost during Super 12.

    Go Wallabies.

I just thought of the name of a new super group – “Dingo Deans and the Dumb Grubbers”!!

    • boutbloodytime

      G’day Roboo,

If you have a half decent internet feed, try http://www.edigitalplace.com

I’m in Italy & use this site to watch all the rugby (and other sports) via sky & Setanta networks…costs about $30AUD for a year’s subscription but you’ll get all the rugby (SXV & Internationals)…hope this helps!

  • robbo

And another thing; first three picks in very Wallabies team for the next three years:

    1. The captain (whoever)
    2. ACC
    3. Ben Alexander – someone who nevers gives up and who KNOWS how to score tries

  • bludge

sweet last clip, did the wallabies win the bled that year?

  • Skippy

Damn you GAGR… I’m just about to head off to bed and you’ve gone and given me a Semi Le Bon.

  • baldwid

Amazing – Despite assertions to the contrary Cooper is a sharp operator. So is Beale and JOC. I think Mitchell is the loss bigger than most people realise. Before he broke his ankle NZ commentators were suggesting that he was on par with Cory Jane as the worlds best winger. Losing him and JOC forced Deans to shift AAC around and introduce that passenger Horne!!

Deans needs to toughen up and drop Beale until he is fit and has his court case dealt with. JOC needs to put the team first, as does Cooper and we need to give the backs a licence to have a go!!

I remember before the RWC everyone in world rugby saw Australia as the most dangerous attacking team, on par with NZ and everyone saw us as the one team capable of pumping the AB’s…my oh my how times have changed!!

In saying all of that – nothing a few wins and some real confidence cant fix – not the sort gained from the Welsh series, but some really good wins!!

    • BloodRed

Unfortunately Deans has gone and handcuffed Quade again. As big as his heart is, Pat McAbe is still nothing more than a crash ball runner and not big or fast enough to be particularly good at it. Quade needs guys with good footwork and some passing skills outside him to shine and not someone who plays like an undersized flanker.

  • Shtintina

hehe, didn’t realise my tweet got a mention!

Let’s hope we see a return of this type of play sometime soon…really soon!

  • Shtinatina

Had to watch it again, Drew on song is amazing, can’t wait for him to get back amongst it.
KB just isn’t firing like he was when he was at the Tahs.
    AAC is all class.

  • Lindommer

I didn’t know we could both pass AND catch the ball! I’m stunned. What’s happened to the Wallabies?

  • Dally M

And that right there is the perfect answer for all those muppets who have been posting that Australia just doesn’t have the quality players & we should settle for 2nd best.

We have the players, we are just not getting the best out of them, whether it be because of the game plan, their over-inflated sense of self-importance, the coach etc.

That’s where it is up to the ARU to send the message down the line that what we are having dished up is not good enough & people need to be accountable including the coach & the players.

If the incumbent’s are not cutting it, give the young blokes a chance. Look at what Timani, Hooper, Douglas & Shipperley have done when given a go.

  • Desperate Wallaby Supporter

Ashley-Cooper @ 13 in most of the plays breaking the line.

    END OV

  • BarneySF

Great clip. Well done on a decent track – so often sporting highlight reels features someone like Noiseworks or Nickelback
