You might want to replace 22. Anthony Fainga’a with 22. Ben Lucas for the Reds.

Is Read captain for Crusaders because of McCaw’s niggle? I’m guessing McCaw was uncertain to start because of his injury and they went with Read for continuity’s sake.

    • Wasn’t Read the captain anyway.

      • Willus

        McCaw’s no longer captain?

    • waiopehu oldboy

Read is captain for the season, McCaw subbed in last week as Read wasn’t due back playing until Round 3: like most people I’d assumed that to mean “our” Round 3, not realising that the SA conf kicking off a week early counted as a Round.

  • Giles Gibbins

Are the Highlanders rocking the co-captain thing? or is that a typo?

  • The Rant

Gotta say – I really like all the aussie backlines here – Even the force aren’t so bad if they can play with more frontfootball and hold it.
Looking forward to watching the rebels this year. Even as a sydney man I’m backing them to finally play to their potential.

    • Seb V

The Rebels tight five always looks below average for me. At least on paper. Would love to see Colby start too!

  • ScrumJunkie

It worked so well last week, the Brumbies have decided to play without a reliable goal kicker again this week.
The other head coaches must be trembling in fear at the genius of the Fisher/Larkham partnership.
Obviously they have worked out McCabe’s freakish game breaking and try scoring ability from the 12 postion far outweighs kicking penaltys or conversions.
Apparently McCabe wins more rugby matches than a decent goal kicker.
    Force by 5.

    • Jamie Miller

I think the Tahs selections are pretty interesting too, especially Hoiles at 6. Statistically, the Tahs had one of the least effective lineouts last year: they’re very dependent on Dennis as both caller and primary jumper there. Now he’s out, there’s a real weakness there. I imagine Douglas will be calling and settling into the 1 jumper role, Potgieter who’s only been with the team 3 weeks will have to know all the calls and step up to the 2 role, with (presumably) more ball heading to Palu and (I guess?) Hoiles at the back. When Skelton comes on, it won’t be any better. Surely the safer bet would have been just to pick another lock who is used to playing an important lineout role to replace Dennis, and have Potgieter at 6, instead of trying to put square pegs in round holes and putting pressure on everyone. It sounds basic but without the fundamentals done right, like a functioning lineout, the Tahs backs don’t get that great first-phase ball.

      • Hawko

Hoiles will call and jump. We don’t have another lock, Chapman is out for the season. Hooper is now also a jumper at the back of the lineout. Look for the cheeky short throw to Skelton when he comes on.

    • Seb V

Lealifano is injured. Who would you put in next as a “decent goal kicker”?. They have no other options other then White or Mogg. If McCabe isn’t at 12, then its either Smith who plays the same way, or robbie colman who i’d say is a lightweight in defence and a fairly inexperienced super rugby player. Attacking the coach when they realistically have no better options is just unintelligent.

  • Bill

Before hearing Tomane was out I’d been hoping that Fey would go ain’t half hot mum Sargent major insane and start cummins vs Speight, now I think he will. Which leads us to what some might say, those who worried that the CERN supercollider could create a black hole to swallow the earth, is a potential extinction event…. WhAt if cummins and fro man Speight run into each other at full tilt? Ghost busters said never combine the streams what if the hairstyles clash? Will we be sent back to the halcyon days of 70’s/80’s cricket? Will we be annihilated in physical forces beyond our ken?
