However, in one week’s time, on Monday 15 March 2010, the Melbourne Rebels are free to do just that. For that is the date the ARU have decreed is ‘Go Time’ for Rebels recruitment. And the Australian Rugby world is holding their collective breath as to what goes down.

As it stands English fly half Danny Cipriani is currently the only player to have actually signed with the franchise. But you get the impression that come next Monday there will be a number of signings announced. Michael Lipman and Gareth Delve, backrowers from England and Wales respectively, have reportedly become Rebels (the Lipman signing now seems to have been vetoed by the ARU). Whilst there is also strong talk that current Super 14 squad members Richard Kingi (Reds) and Peter Betham (Waratahs) have also signed. So that’s….five, I mean four.

Rebel, Rebel. Your face is a mess.

Plenty of others have been rumoured. Julian Salvi the latest. And with the Rebels suggesting that they have pulled out of the race for David Pocock (although earlier reports suggest it was the other way round), then this may add strength to the Salvi gossip. But the big three of Stirling Mortlock, Rocky Elsom and Berrick Barnes (the past Wallaby skipper, the current Wallaby skipper and the originally named Wallaby vice-skipper) have all been ‘mentioned in dispatches’.

None have set the world on fire playing in the current tournament. Rocky perhaps has the excuse of a delayed start to the season because of injury, but could it be a case of having other things on their mind? Could the imminent announcement of their signing be affecting their form? Are they worried about how they will be perceived amongst their team mates, and their fans? Either way, their current teams will be hoping, whatever their decision, they get back to full form ASAP.

It would now seem that Barnes (through his management) is playing games. Apparently McQueen has instructed his CEO Brian Waldron to stop negotiations with Barnes (has his S14 form had anything to do with it?) and focus on signing former NRL Super star Mark Gasnier, now playing with Stade Francais. The fly in the ointment is Gaz’s relationship with Ewen McKenzie, now at the Reds, who was the leaguie’s first rugby coach in Paris.

So let’s look at the current environment and have a guess at what may happen.

Reds Academy Reunion.

The Queensland Reds were the team that suffered the most from the introduction of the Force in 2006. First of all they lost their skipper, Nathan Sharpe, who went on to play a key role in recruitment for the Force ripping the heart out of the Reds and their Academy program. First teamers Junior Pelesasa, Luke Doherty, Tai McIsaacs, Rudi Vedelago and Scott Daruda were joined by young up and comers of the likes of David Pocock, Digby Ioane and Richard Brown.

It was no coincidence that the Reds bore the brunt. They were a team in turmoil, only winning three games that 2005 season, and the players were largely dissatisfied with the direction of the team and organisation. At the same time the Force would have a coaching staff that included John Mulvihill, a prominent QLD Club coach. He knew the better club players from the QLD competition, in particular the strongest club in QLD at the time – Gold Coast. And he took many of the best players with him.

So where do the Reds stand now? Well the good news is that the team is travelling better than they have in a long time but on the down side, the organisation itself is in all sorts of trouble (still). They have gone cap in hand to the ARU, who should come to the party, but it is sure to have the players worrying about their next pay check.

Sitauti - ready to break out!

As for players? Well they have a bucket load off contract. From my records the following players are unsigned for next year: Poutasi Vaiofiso Tuasivi Luafutu, Brando Vaaulu, Saia Faingaa, Anthony Faingaa, Jack Kennedy, Scott Higginbotham, Laurie Weeks, Dayna Edwards, Ezra Taylor, Peter Hynes, Morgan Turinui, Adam Byrnes, Sean Hardman, Van Humphries, Blair Connor, Daniel Braid.

That’s some list and doesn’t include any of the Academy players – talent like Aiden Toua, Ben Tapuai, Liam Gill, Paul Alo-Emile, Albert Anae, Jono Lance, Simon Morahan, Ed Quirk, Jake Schatz, Kimami Sitauti, Dom Shipperly and James Slipper. Phew.

Coach Ewen McKenzie wants to keep Braid, but he’s already served the mandatory 2 years maximum contract period for a “Marquee” player. As for the rest of them, no coach puts as much work into his recruitment and retention as Link does. Key for him will be the Faingaa twins, Scott Higginbottham, Laurie Weeks and Peter Hynes. There is probably a few fringe players there they may be worth retaining – young Connor and the experience Turinui for starters. On the flip side players like Luafutu, Vaaulu as well as props Kennedy and Edwards would be worried about their position in the squad. Veterans Humphries and Hardman are more than likely to make their own decision.

How many will be Rebels?

At the New South Wales Waratahs, things don’t seem too promising, if you read the press and our forum. In reality they are 2 and 2, as are the Reds, but the style of football is less appealing. Angst within the organisation is not desirable at the moment with the Rebels prowling. Of more concern for the NSWRU is that Sydney University coach Damien Hill has been appointed Assistant Coach to the legend Rod McQueen. Sydney Uni are the glamour club of the NSW club competition, with more rep players in their current squad than they can conceivably fit in a starting team. There is no doubt that Hill will be looking at the players he knows the best to fill a number of his squad positions.

As to players off contract, they are doing a hell of a lot better than the Reds with just Berrick Barnes,Chris Thompson, Benn Robinson, Daniel Halangahu, Tom Carter, Cam Jowitt, Wycliffe Palu and Adam Freier off contract. Barnes is now off the Rebel radar, as is Tom Carter (apparently). Cliffy Palu and Benn Robinson are both being chased big times, and fair enough too. Sydney Uni flyhalf Dan Halangahu may be a good shot whilst the experienced Adam Freier would be a signing of the ilk of the Force’s first signing, Brendan Cannon.

There is also some pretty handy talent in the Academy available for contracts as well. Paddy Ryan, Jacob Woodhouse, Greg Peterson, Locky McCaffrey, Luke Douglas, Pat McCutcheon, Adam D’Arcy, Brendan McKibbon and, I believe, Nemani Nadolo. All very promising talents.

Both staying put!

The ACT Brumbies have underachieved so far this year, but are still sitting relatively pretty with three wins. They are such a strong organisation and rarely lose a player that they want to keep. This is evidenced in the fact that their two young fly halves Christian Lealiifano and Matt Toomua have, reportedly, turned their back on the Rebels to remain at the Brumbies. Despite the Brumbies having Wallaby star Matt Giteau on their books. That is great loyalty.

The worry is that two of their most experienced players in Stirling Mortlock and Rocky Elsom may leave their stables. Morty’s career is nearing completion, to be fair, but would still be a great signing by McQueen. Elsom is in his prime and has shown his rugby mercenary tendencies, so as a world class backrower would be vital in giving the Rebels instant credibility.

Along with Morty, Lealiifano, Rocky and Toomua, the following players are also up for offer: Andrew Smith, Alifeleti Mafi, Francis Fainifo, Afusipa Taumoepeau, Patrick Phibbs, Stephen Hoiles, Jack Vanderglas, Peter Kimlin, Sitaleki Timani, Mark Chisholm,Justin Harrison.

There are a few players there that may want to look elsewhere for opportunities including Alfi Mafi, Afusipa Taumoepeau, Patrick Phibbs and Sitaleki Timani. I am also of the belief that Mark Chisholm’s in-laws (former Wallaby lock Bill Campbell) currently lives in Melbourne, so that may be an inducement for the young family.

But like I said, the Brumbies are like a family down there and I’d suggest not many of them – not even their youngsters in the Academy – feel the need to make the move elsewhere. In saying that I reckon James Stannard is a very good scrum half and deserving of a Super 15 contract somewhere. Perhaps he and Kingi (perhaps even McKibbon) at the Rebels?

And now we move west. To the Western Force. Currently sitting at the bottom of the ladder without having won a game. The club went through all sorts of turmoil last year surrounding the role of head coach John Mitchell. In the end key backs Matt Giteau and Drew Mitchell opted to return to the east coast, whilst a severe injury list has stretched them to their limits this year.

Will Shep and Morty unite again?

Fortunately for the Force there is not too much damage the Rebels, or anyone else for that matter, can do to their roster. From my records only Ben Whittaker, Dane Haylett-Petty, David Pocock, Josh Tatupu, Kieran Longbottom, Cameron Shepherd, Haig Sare, Chris O’Young, Sam Harris and Nathan Sharpe are available.

Pocock has already said no, apparently. Whilst Sharpe’s future is interesting. With Horwill gone for the season Sharpe may find himself back as an important cog in the Wallaby wheel in 2010. Where that leaves him beyond that is anyone’s guess. But it might drive his bargaining power up a little. As for the rest of the Force players, there’s not many ‘franchise builders’ there. Perhaps Ben Whitaker may be aggrieved that a part timer (Pek Cowan) is being picked ahead of him? Perhaps Cameron Shepherd may be pissed that Gits and Drewie got out when the going was good? Dane Haylett-Petty is a talent for sure and probably the only other player the Rebels may be interested in.

In the end though, perhaps the Rebels just won’t get the players they want. Perhaps they’ll have to make do with players in the Longbottom and Tatupu class. Because one thing that is continuously overlooked here is that it’s not just the Rebels who will be recruiting. You can be sure that Big Link is talking to players, especially ones he’s coached, about moving to Brisbane. And for the first time in ages the Reds may actually have some appeal. Playing with the likes of Will Genia and James Horwill is a real attraction. At the same time, for reasons mentioned earlier, the Brumbies are always an attractive proposition for any player whilst living in Sydney is a significant drawcard the Waratahs can fall back on.

The appeal of moving to Perth to play for the Force seems to be fading. They struggled to make any significant signings in the off-season and the pressure will be one to rectify that for season 2011. As for the appeal for players to live in Melbourne? Well I would imagine it will much greater than heading west.

Either way, the silly season is about to hit. Seven days at counting. Soon enough we will know just how credible the Rebels will be. And we’ll know how much the Link has turned the Reds around. And we’ll know just how on the nose the Force are. And who from Lindommer’s excellent list on the forum of Aussie playing overseas will come home? Rodney Blake? Matt Carraro? Nick Berry? Gareth Hardy? Hugh McMeniman? Ben Jacbs? Lachlan Mitchell? Chris Siale? Brett Stapleton? The list goes on.

For the sake of the article though, perhaps a Rebels team for the first round next year may be something like:

15 Danny Cipriani, 14 Peter Betham, 13 Stirling Mortlock, 12 Lloyd Johannson, 11 Nemani Nadolo, 10 Daniel Halangahu, 9 Richard Kingi, 8 Gareth Delve, 7 Julian Salvi, 6 Rocky Elsom [c], 5 Pat O’Connor, 4 Mark Chisholm, 3 Danya Edwards, 2 Adam Freier, 1 Jack Kennedy.

16 Ben Whitaker, 17 Pat Ryan, 18 Daniel Heenan, 19 Beau Robinson, 20 Brendan McKibbon, 21 Jono Lance, 22 Alfi Mafi.

But that’s all pie in the sky stuff. In the meantime, cross your fingers and your toes that your team is on top of their recruitment game. Because season 2011 is going to depend on it.

Coming up with a list of the top tries of the decade was a tough one. What makes one try stand out from another? Is it individual brilliance we are gauging it on, or is it whole of team involvement? Rehearsed tries from a set piece or instinctive brilliance? Does a try against the All Blacks or in a final count for more than one against a touring nations’ third XV?

Well frankly, for this list there is no hard and fast answer. There is definitely a case of tries in big matches being a big factor. Players standing up to the occasion so to speak. There’s a couple of match winners, that’s for sure. Set piece majesty? Hmmm …there is a couple, as it is something I love to see. All those hours on the training paddock paying off on the actual field. But it doesn’t take from my love of that piece of individual brilliance, brought upon by natural instinctiveness and awareness of the opportunity.

And so to the list which includes, thanks to some of the champions at G&GR, video footage of each try. And awaaaaayyy, we go:

5 Lote Tuqiri v England. Telstra Stadium, Sydney (22 November, 2003) – Rugby World Cup Final

Click here to view the embedded video.

There is something about this try that both delights me and disappoints me. It delights me from the sheer execution of it all. Remembering this was the biggest test in Australian rugby ever! Sure we’d been in World Cup finals before, one a couple, but this was the big one. This was at home and it seemed like EVERYONE was watching. We’d blown the kiwis off the park the week before, and know was our chance for the Poms.

We were only five minutes into the game, and the chance was on. A pin point Steve Larkham cross field kick where the athletic Lote Tuqiri monstered the diminutive Jason Robinson. It was the perfect tactic. Not only was Lote twice the size as Billy Wizz but he was superb in the air as well. It all played out to sheer perfection and there we were, leading early with a planned move coming up trumps. And then….and then it was put in the back pocket and we never saw it again.

Why didn’t we try it at least once more? Was it as a result of Larkham’s head knock? Did we get complacent? Did we choke? Michael Lynagh showed in the 91 RWC quarter final against Ireland that if something works once in a game of rugby, there’s no reason to stop using it. But the 03 Wallabies did stop. And we didn’t look like cross the line for the remaining 75 minutes plus injury time.

But in the moment? It was a brilliantly taken try, planned and executed to near perfection.

*****

Tomorrow we look at number 4, with the only hint being it is one of our most recent ones. But NOT the one the IRB think…

The Welsh can sniff it again. The vulnerability of this seemingly disparate Wallaby touring side, inconsistent and incontinent (well, pissing in the wind anyway) with a lack of game day direction.

I’m not sure how its going to turn out on Saturday and am a bit loathe to predict it but Wales are in the box seat having defeated the Wallabies last year (as the only Southern Hemisphere scalp) and, unlike their opponents, running into some good form.

& Jones

The boyos gave a very good account of themselves against the No 1 ranked side in the world a few weeks back. If you remember, Wales ran the ball will nilly at the All Blacks after winning the lions share of possession.

They didn’t get over the tryline but stretched the All Black defence in the process. The All Blacks countered and won by Dan Carter and mates putting boot to ball, competently.

Wales defeated Argentina last week with a dominant lineout and more than parity in the scrums (a known Puma strength) with the added benefit of loads of technical penalties. It was as if Le Fuse was now a fixture in the Argie pack – El Fuse!

Although a relatively dour game (where have you heard that before) the Welsh were effective at the breakdown and possessed a prevalent maul.

In fact, I reckon there’s going to be loads of mauling by the boyos on Saturday as one of their main attacking weapons and Peel is a box kick exponent. That’ll no doubt put a bit of pressure on our vulnerable young Wobbly friends.

They do have a propensity to run the ball in the right conditions and last year won the Six Nations on the back of some expansive play. The weather used to be a factor in that; however, one would assume the roof will be closed as it’s going to be raining all week.

Fortunately, new turf has been laid at the Millenium Stadium since the appalling condition it was in for the Wales v New Zealand match. In the ten years its been in operation the Stadium has been re-turfed 25 times; so they have some issues with it.

Looking at their team, its loaded with experience. A dozen of their frontline players are British & Irish Lions tourists. Jamie Roberts is a devastating runner in the centres and with Tom Shanklin is close to being on a par with the Irish pairing. Unfortunately Shanklin is still out with a broken nose so young Jonathan Davies gets another chance.

Stephen Jones is an excellent tactical and goal kicker who really knows how to run a game. He also is prepared to take on the defence.

What can you say about Shane Williams, the best finisher in the business. His form dropped away with the Lions but its back, he scored two tries in last week’s Argentina fixture. Another of a strong back three, fullback Hook is mercurial but I wouldn’t be kicking the pill to him as he’ll territorially make you pay.

Alun-Wyn Jones, Luke Charteris and Ryan Jones make up a formidable attacking lineout combination who will exploit any weaknesses, and we’ve seen plenty of that with the Wallabies.

They have a strong scrummaging forward unit, especially British Lions Gethin Jenkins and Matthew Rees, with Martin Williams, Andy Powell and Ryan Jones a well balanced backrow combo and arguably the best loose forward team in the Six Nations.

Unlike the box of chocolates, with Wales I think you know what you’re going to get.

WALES: James Hook; Leigh Halfpenny, Jamie Roberts, Jonathan Davies, Shane Williams; Stephen Jones, Dwayne Peel; Gethin Jenkins, Matthew Rees, Paul James, Alun-Wyn Jones, Luke Charteris, Andy Powell, Martyn Williams, Ryan Jones (Captain)

Replacements: Huw Bennett, Duncan Jones, Jonathan Thomas, Dan Lydiate, Martin Roberts, Andrew Bishop, Tom James

In the four matches they’ve had so far this year, you can’t help but have one of the key Dingo Bingo words ringing in your ears: “Growth”. Arriving with about 2 weeks prep after winning the Super 14, AntipoDeans spent last year unearthing all the crappy habits and inadequacies left by 10 years of outdated coaching philosophies and neglect.

Some of the faults he found included:

An inability to defend the breakdown (”I thought we could just hang out with the backs”)

Absolutely zero tactical kicking ability (”fuck it, I’ll chuck up a bomb”)

Limited counter-attack or support play (”GO LATHO!”)

Few attacking options outside of monotonous phase play and the odd ex mungo (”fling it to Lote”)

(I’m counting the scrum as being already on the mend).

Over last year, and in the Super14 season since, big strides have been made in these areas.

We’ve seen the attack go deeper and create multiple options off a single play. There are signs of the back 3 gaining confidence in counter-attack notably through Lakky Turner and Ashley-Cooper, and support play has drastically improved. No longer are players trying to do it all themselves; they’re finding other players in better positions and have the handling skills to get the ball to them, unselfishly. Witness the try vs France in Sydney.

Breakdown security is definitely a work in progress, but we’re seeing some famous seagullers do more ruck clearing than ever before, and it’s been made obvious that this is a point of focus for the team.

Of all the improvements though, the key paradigm changer for the Wallabies is the arrival of an accurate tactical kicking game. When Dingo started last year, he was openly critical of the Wallabies’ ability in this area, and took the drastic step of actually practising it (shock, horror) and measuring the players competitively for distance and accuracy.

Through the Super14, we saw Australia’s key kicking protagonists – Giteau and Barnes – honing their skills, and in the first three games of this international season, their left/right combo mercilessly pinned the BaaBaas and Italy in their own halves. With the amount of counter-attack ball that both the All Blacks and Springboks live off, this development alone could swing a series win for the Wallabies.

In the ‘reasons for concern’ bin along with ruck security is busting the advantage line through the forwards. A good rush defence (of which the Boks are masters) that hems the Wallabies in close to the ruck could go a long way to blunting our wide attacking options and exposing low impact ball running forwards. The Wallabies were well beaten by the Italians in this area and relying on the return of the injured Palu and Elsom to fix all is risky.

Another nagging concern is the historically solid Wallaby defence. There was a try landslide against the Wallabies last year (I’m still in therapy for Joburg) and we gave the Italians one of the 4 tries they’ve scored all year. The shut out against France was more satisfying, but it this new defensive system that requires no specialist coach will be tested far more in the Tri-Nations.

In predicting this year’s result, I’ve got an unusual feeling. It goes beyond the usual optimism mixed with foreboding, and into a new sensation: expectation. Can we actually start to think of ourselves as at least equals in terms of expectations, if not a little more than that?

Just before you answer, a couple of other dimensions that might just spring a surprise for the Wallabies this year.

First – the scrum. Seriously. Our first choice front row has no-one to fear north or south, and Adam Freier had a glint in his eye when commenting on the height of the Boks scrum vs the Lions on Foxsports last week; keeping in mind that Benn Robinson could scrummage 10cms above the dirt. With the right referee, this could be an unaccustomed gamebreaker for the Wallabies.

Second – place kicking. How different it is when the scoreboard ticks over, even without a try in sight. No more free-kicks at the break downs and no Dan Carter for the ABs. Giteau had the best kicking percentage of all teams during the autumn tours last year and has been harvesting the points since. Dare I say it we even have backup kickers in Mortlock, Barnes and O’Connor.

Convinced?

And by some margin. Despite his rosy red cheeked baby face, Moore is now very much a senior player in the Wallaby line-up. His lineout is almost spot on these days, and he is the best scrumming hooker in Oz. Add to that a high work rate and strong running game and its easy to see why many were labelling Moore as one of the best hookers in the world last year.

The likely candidates:

His scrummaging, in a strong Waratah pack, seems first class, thanks in no small parts to his immense strength. And around the field TPN is just a freak. His tackling is missile-like, and just as destructive, whilst his running and passing game belies his size. A wonderful player to watch and, because of the gap to the next best hooker, Tatafu staying in form and injury free is vital to Wallaby success.

The Roughies:

Freier is the 3rd best hooker in Australia at the moment and he’s not even playing. Injured and “out for the season” I am unsure as to whether this means the Super 14 season or whether it stretches to the tests as well. Regardless a prolonged period on the sideline won’t be good for his game. Still battles with the stigma of being a little forward, but his combative style belies his stature and should be an example to any young forward running around today.

Sean Hardman (QLD): Is really a roughie due to the complete lack of depth elsewhere in the nation. Has had his best season for a number of years, but still is really no more than serviceable. Highly dependable in lineouts and scrums and just adequate elsewhere. Tai McIsaacs is probably on the same level at the moment, but is committed to coaching in Japan next year, so can’t be considered. Who else is there?

What is Deans looking for?

Like every position in the tight five, it is set piece assuredness that is most sought after here. Taking it a step further for the hooker, he really needs to be a forward leader. He needs to lead the scrums, and although he may not call the lineout throws, he is the most critical component. But the most important thing Deans is looking for in this position, as alluded to above, is depth. After Moore and TPN, the cupboard is bare. Freier? Injured. McIsaacs and Hardman? Aging battlers. Faingaa, Holmes, Ulugia, Edmonds? Just not up to it. Fitzpatrick? Quite possibly down the line, but not just yet.

Who is the answer?

The combination of Moore and TPN is a fantastic pairing of set piece solidity (most of the time) and general play ability. Both play a similar game with similar attributes, which enables a compatibility of game plan. The decision, though, is made a hell of a lot easier by the fact that two states have no test quality hookers among either of them.

Review and score of the NSW Waratahs vs Chiefs in the round 2 of Super 14 2009

Masaga - klutzes his way into the World Mullet XV

Waratahs 11 Chiefs 7

On the one hand Chris Hickey can say the Waratahs have played two fancied kiwi sides in the last two weeks, for two wins. On the other, were 60 minutes of inexplicable, rudderless rugby from NSW.

It started with pushed passes in the back end of the first half, transitioned to midfield crash ball into traffic being the only attacking option, and culminated with midfield bombs going sideways. At times I wondered how many men the Tahs had on the field, because there didn’t seem to be anyone outside Beale after the second phase. A scratch team would surely have had more shape.

What saved NSW, other than a moment of slick skill from Beale in the 17th minute when he put a perfect kick-pass into Tahu for a try, was how god awful the Chiefs were. Both their line-out and scrums were disaster zones and consequently Stephen Donald might as well have stayed at home. Sivivatu tried in vain to kick start something (his chip kicks actually work) and Masaga had a shocker.

On the bright side for NSW was Sam Norton-Knight at full-back. Like Gerrard for the Brumbies, his positional kicking was first rate and his positional nouse impressive – man of the match for me. It was also positive to see Cliffy Palu back. He may have been a little one dimensional, but he also made over 100 metres and was his usual juggernaut self.

But it wouldn’t be the Tahs if they didn’t entice and infuriate at the same time. The first 20 minutes had me thinking under Hickey they’d taken a big step forward. The rest, especially the 20% place kicking rate, had me right back in the worst performances of 2008.

One good thing though – I found another candidate for The World Mullet XV.

The scorers:

For Waratahs:
Pen: Beale
Drop: Beale

For Chiefs:
Replacements: 16 Adam Freier, 17 Dan Palmer, 18 Chris Thomson, 19 Scott Fava, 20 Brett Sheehan, 21 Daniel Halangahu, 22 Tom Carter.

Preview of NSW Waratahs vs Hurricanes in round 1 of Super 14 2009

But can he tackle a TimTam?

Is it too early to call a side’s hopes for the season ‘on the line’ in round one? Probably, but this game will tell a fair bit about how the rest of the season will pan out for both of them.

Each team has had major overhauls during the off-season and would approach this game with a fair degree of nervousness considering the burden of expectation that both will carry this year.

Key to the ‘Tahs chances in this game will be the ability to get the ball quickly to the outside backs and let them work the under-strength ‘Canes over. Wellington have named Hosea Gear and Piri Weepu out of position at no’s 12 and 10 respectively, this to me speaks volumes about a potential lack of cohesion in the back-line.

Although one is at no 12 and the other at 13, Timana Tahu v Ma’a Nonu will be a key battle. I expect the ‘Tahs to give Timtam plenty of space in which to try and expose Nonu’s lack of lateral movement in defence and general lack of combination with Gear. On the flip-side, Timtam is no rocket scientist in defence either – despite during the off-season passing the only exam he has ever sat, that of rugby theory – I would think the ‘Canes have roughly the same plan for him. They will send plenty of decoy runners at Timtam, who when faced with defensive choices in recent times, has generally made the wrong one.

Kurtley Beale will need a strong performance to get his confidence back after spending the summer kicking stones and eating KFC. The world lay at Beale’s feet at the end of last Super 14 season, until he broke one of them that is, and he now finds himself the third choice no. 10 behind Gits and Cooper at the national level. If Beale can get things on track early then Timtam, Rob Horne, Lote, Lachie Turner et al should be too much for the ‘Canes to handle.

The forward battle will be a fairly even one, but if the ‘Tahs front row suffers an injury or two the reserves are rookies, as Freir looks set to be ruled out, and this could be problematic. Even with the loss of Vickerman, Lyons and Elsom, the ‘Tahs piggies look surprising good and should shade the ‘Canes who were victims of a similar flight of quality at last season’s end.

Wellington are on the second line of betting to win the Super 14, I can’t see why as I don’t think they look like a settled or cohesive unit. I expect it to be tight early however the ‘Canes over reliance on Nonu and Rodney So’oialo, plus injuries to a few prized players, should mean the ‘Tahs will be able to see off the threat and sneak away with the game in the last 20 minutes.

Cote says ‘Tahs by 6.

A shoot from the hip preview and prediction of the various 2009 Super 14 teams chances

who's gonna bloody win it?

You can over analyse these things so I’m gonna shoot from the hip. Rather than try and rank everyone (who gives a shit if your 11th or 12th?) I’m gonna chuck em all into a few categories to guide where you bet your rent.

Cheetahs – fodder

Lions – fodder

Highlanders – kiwi fodder (so not bottom of table, but close)

Bulls – strugglers. While there’s more than a few big names in there like Matfield, Du Preez, Habana, Spies. I’d back em more if they realised we’re playing under the ELVs and they weren’t tearing each other apart in the sheds.

Chiefs – strugglers. Some excitement through the backs, but Jono Gibbes was a one man forward pack and he’s gone before his limbs fall off.

Reds – mid table. One man’s exciting youth is another man’s greenhorn rookie. Missing big names down the spine – 2, 8, 9 – to be real challengers. Another year or two away.

Western Force – mid table. Almost have the goods in the cattle (notably excepting the front row) but also have the hoodoos of home ground softness and a coach that the team fucken hates.

Blues – mud table. A lot of people are rating the blues, but I reckon they lost their mongrel in the form of Flavell and their nouse in the form of Ivuns. Will blow hot and cold as usual.

Stormers – contenders. A perennially solid team with a steady squad.

Hurricanes – contenders. Another bunch that everyone’s excited about when you look at the team sheet – So’oailo, Nonu, Smith and Hore as examples. The problem is they’re all thick, which shows at the pointy end.

Waratahs – finalists. Yes, they’re two big names down (Elsom & Vickerman), but the young/new ‘uns that got them to the 2008 final (Beale, Horne, Tahu, Turner, Mumm, TPN, Burgess) are that year further on and there’s plenty of Wallabies still wandering around. It also sounds like Hickey’s built on Link’s legacy.

Brumbies – finalists. Probably the best depth of the all the Aussie sides. They pretty much played with a second 15 all last year and a bunch of quality players have come back, to the point where they have some good names, like Tyrone Smith, struggling to find the bench. I also like the no nonsense attitude Friend and the Melon are bringing

Sharks – finalists. Holy fuck, have you looked at the squad? It’s chokka full of Springboks and they’ve got a great run in with something like 7 home games running into the finals. They do travel like shit though.

Crusaders – finalists. Of course they bloody are, it just runs in the blood there by now and Blackadder knows how to dish up more of the same. Obviously losing Carter is a blow, so at least they’re not a shoo-in to win it this year.

Looking over that you could accuse me of being a little Aussie biased (how surprising) but I have solid evidence behind my thinking:

Particularly the Kiwis, but also the Saffas have been totally arse-raped by Europe when it comes to players, and not just old fellas but others coming into their prime. We’ve not done nearly so badly.

The G&GR poll! At the time of writing this more than 180 rugby officianados agreed with my finalist selections.

Who’s gonna win it? Well farked if I know Mal, but the bookies would seem to agree that the ’saders are in the box seat, and I’d probably have to agree (yawn). But then the bookies have the ‘canes in second, so what the fuck do they know either….

Sure, they’re only trials, but the teams this week are looking pretty full strength and as such they provide a few interesting match ups that Antipodeans will undoubtedly be watching.

Here are a few that have caught my eye from the Tahs vs Brumbies match at the SFS this Thursday:

The front rows. All Wallabies. Baxter, Robinson and Moore are in the chair, but can Alexander and Henderson stake a claim?

Battle of the back-rows. The Tahs are looking underdone with Palu sitting this one out. Can anyone stick in the no. 6 roundabout?

Half-back. Good reports on Holmes’ last outing. Can he push Burgess who’ll no doubt get a run off the bench?

Mid-field. The new Brumbies power house pairing takes on the young Tahs. Can they handle it? Will Tahu’s hammy survive?

Which ones would you be watching (if you could see it)? Teams below.
