The Dropped Kick-Off 9 – The New Kids on the Block (with Matty Hodgson)

No muck ups with our recording this time. The Dropped Kick-Off is finally back in 2019!

For our first (official) podcast of year, Nick W heads west to chat Global Rapid Rugby. With the Asian Showcase over and the Pacific Showcase kicking off this weekend, Nick sat down with GRR’s Head of Rugby, Wallaby and Western Force legend Matty Hodgson to discuss the recent Showcases, as well as the future direction of the competition and how it will fit into the framework of Australian Rugby in general.

Also check out the first match of the Pacific Showcase tomorrow (18/5), when the Fijian Latui take on Kagifa Samoa in Suva on SBS Viceland from 1:00pm AEST onwards.

You can also check out Nick H’s first Dropped Kick-Off piece from earlier this year, ‘Total Eclipse of the Sunwolves’, here.

From the fan perspective, the games in Singapore & Hong Kong were a great road trip away for Force fans as a good litmus test. The same time zone & flights make a fantastic weekend getaway-work out cheaper than travel to Sydney Melb Bris. And the reception from the locals is great. Baby steps still but a great start. Love the comment about the Perth Bledisloe being a sellout in the state with no rugby. The community work the Force are doing at ground level with Rugby Roos, schools and clubs has been awesome.
The rugby games have been exactly that”Rapid”! Fast flowing and enjoyable-the teams & refs are still adjusting to the new rules & pace, but much of that can be ironed out for the real deal next year, along with the entertainment at the Perth games.
Really looking forward to seeing the rest of the teams Fiji, Samoa etc coming on board.

Great podcast – very informative about GRR’s approach and the fact they are less constrained to change things up to make it work. Bodes well with this sort of mindset.

Thanks for the GRR coverage G&GR. Good job Nick. Global Rapid Rugby has a very clear focus – maintaining a professional rugby team in Perth in order to continue to provide a rugby pathway for local rugby players. The focus is WA and the Asia Pacific region. Excellent game between Fiji and Samoa to launch the Pacific Showcase. Fantastic to be able to watch it in Johannesburg on GRR’s live stream.
