Matt Rowley October 17, 2012 62

No GravatarSaturday will be the final home match for Nathan Sharpe – a great servant of the game and a great friend of Green and Gold Rugby. In the video below he leaves you a message, why not leave him one in the comments?

If you’re on Twitter you can also get the #farewellSharpie hashtag trending over the weekend.

Thank you, best wishes and good luck Sharpie. One of the great Wallabies and one of 4 Southern Hemisphere players (and only forward) in the history of the game to get the Stephen Jones stamp of approval.

    • jon

“and one of 4 Southern Hemisphere players (and only forward) in the history of the game to get the Stephen Jones stamp of approval.”

      don’t tarnish Sharpie’s legacy!

  • OOAAHH

Your the voice Sharpey. Great memories of a great player. And a top guy to boot letting me take a photo of him holding a photo of his twin brother Buzz Lightyear. Bet of luck mate you deserve to go out a winner..

  • bill

I may have looked at you ranting in the huddle and thought blah, blah, blah stop ranting you goggle eyed f*ker, I may have looked at you carting the ball up and going to ground early, but you’ve adapted and improved and cut that shit out, you’ve always been a quality player and you, remarkably, haven’t stopped improving as a player. And you were a laugh in your podcast.

    An ornament to rugby.

  • Barbarian

    Blink, Sharpey, Blink!

    • http://www.greenandgoldrugby.com/ Matt Rowley

Yeah, I found myself trying to out-stare him – not easy.

Luckily we did the podcast remotely, I would have been a mess

  • bill

what is that painting doing? looks like a row of knobends!

  • cyclopath

Sharpie is the Barossa Shiraz of Oz rugby – better and better with age.
    Good luck, big fella.

  • gerard flanagan

You deserve to go out a winner. All that needs to happen now is for the ABs to read the friggin script, but the problem is they ain’t so good at readin’

Win lose or draw you’ve been a great and modest champion in the mould of all the great Australian sporting champions.

Have a beer or twenty on me after the game mate and good luck for Europe.

  • Big Ted

If the other 14 can muster your passion and penchànt for hard work…we’re a bloody shot for sat! All the best sharpey. The vision of you belting out the anthem before every international has been stamped in my memory for ever.

  • The Rant

You’re a champion mate. If I’d have my way you would have captained us since 2008.
Conduct has always been on the money and you’ve been as good an ambassador as rugby could hope for.
I don’t know much. But if you have to look like a walking circumsized wang…you might as well be a 2metre long one :))

All the best in the future and please don’t lose to the poms cos I’ll be in the stands!!!

  • Mick Coogan

Lot of respect from this side of the ditch true battler. Best of luck for you in the future and my regards to the family.

  • ‘Boutbloodytime

    Well done Sharpie,

You’ve done Australia proud every time you’ve pulled on the jersey.

You’ve shown leadership, character & Australian rugby is richer as a result of your contribution, especially over this past season.

Bloody glad you finally got a crack at the captaincy, we need more like you.

All the best for Saturday, the NH tour & your life after rugby.

  • fletch

Sounds like you have had a blast wearing the jersey Sharpie.

You always stepped up and its been good watching you play hard over the years and win your fair share of lineouts and snatch some bloody important ones too.

Good Luck on Sat night – you are all capable of beating these guys.

  • Trys NOT Kicks

Great player and a real decent bloke. Every match line up I am pleased to see Sharpe there and I will miss him once he is gone. An inspirational work rate and a man who didn’t just let the jersey honour him but honored it in kind.

  • jimmy

    Congrats Sharpey,

Mate I don’t believe many of the Wallabies when they say that they take absolute pride in the jersey and consider it an honor to wear it and that they give it all…..but I do when I hear it from you.

Always enjoyed watching you put in mate – all the best for the future.

  • TheYank

Good on ya Sharpie, been watching you play on the wallabies since I began watching rugby over here in the States. If I could pick a adjective to describe your style of play it would be most certainly consistency. Always played at a high level, and this team is definitely going to miss your skills and leadership. Now beat those All Blacks!

  • peterlala

Nathan Sharpe, farewell. Thanks for your great effort in the Green and Gold. Best wishes for the furture.

  • Nutta

You have taken your chances and had a hell of a ride. I envy you.

As much as I envy you I congratulate you on your achievements and thank you for your efforts.

When it’s time, fold your kit and put it away reverently – comfortable in the knowledge you well-repaid the debt of privilege bestowed on you by playing with your whole heart.

  • Scotty

I remember my dad taking me to watch 1st XV games at TSS on a Saturday afternoon – it was when Sharpie was around and the boys had a chant for him come lineout time – “SHARPIE JUMPS THE HIGHEST, ooo ahh, oo ahh”.
geez, that was a long time ago…

  • Pedro

Good luck big fella. It’s been a joy watching you play and give everything for the pride of representing Australia.

Also if they want you to stay in the squad for the Euro tour, don’t feel like you’re letting anyone down by saying no. You’ve done enough already, as a wise man once said: “That’ll do pig, that’ll do.” There’s no shame in wanting to still be able to walk when you’re 40 plus.

  • enid sharpe

Sharpies mum: Thanks guys for all your comments. He is the best – on and off the field.
    An extremely proud Aussie!

    • http://www.greenandgoldrugby.com/ Matt Rowley

You certainly should be proud of him Enid – most importantly he’s a great guy

      Matt

    • Mick Coogan

Behind every hard man there’s an even tougher Mum. On you Enid!

    • H and Faysey

Thanks for the memories Sharpie. You are a true Champion.
We have enjoyed every moment of your Rugy career.
So proud to have known you. Now let the future begin!!!

  • CT Hong Kong

Jeez, if we could just figure out how to bottle the ticker, the passion, the sheer-bloody-doggedness, the respect for the game, the repect for the jersey and his country that Nathan Sharpe has, then somehow find a way to instill that in the current crop of players…….well, the Wallabies would be unstoppable. Australian rugby will be losing a great player. Sad to see you go Sharpie. Thanks for the memories and best of luck.

  • chick

    gotta love mums

  • Ian

The last of a rare breed. I hope the younguns learn a lot from you in the next few games, you have left your mark champ! You will be missed.

    • Ian

      P.S.

Please belt the crap out of those arrogant kiwi bastards!

  • New rebel

Sharpie, mate, you are and have been a fine ax ample of everything I love about this game and our country. A superb tactition, a committed warrior, a loyal team player, but most importantly; a great bloke. I will always remember you as a stand up gentleman. Thanks for the memories.

  • Suckerforred

I know I am going to tear up on Saturday night. I just hope he makes a lap of honor.

See you there Sharpie. May you live forever.

    • http://www.greenandgoldrugby.com/ Matt Rowley

Well, that’d be one locking spot Robbie wouldn’t have to fill for eternity!

  • chuntsah

Simply a champion. As a true servant to the game, a captain of honour and valour, and an inspiration to many. You’ll be particularly missed by the type of West Australian who know a good game of footy when they see one.

    A good human to boot.

  • Alan

What a legend, sadly we’ll not see the likes of him again. A true gent on and off the pitch. Been consistently one of our best wallabies for years now and gave 110% everytime he walked on the pitch

In terms of comparisons, he is destined to be mentioned alongside Eales when assessing our younger locks coming through.

will miss watching him, thanks for the memories sharpie

  • Queenslander

Thanks Sharpie, always put in the big effort against some tough pigs across many years. A fine servant of the game. I put a twenty on you scoring a try this weekend.

  • tbh

We’ll always love you over here in the West, Sharpie. Congrats on a fine career and for being a true gent off the pitch.

Enjoy your retirement, you’ve earned it big fella.

  • Wheatman

Thanks Sharpie for your great rugby career. Have watched many a match with you giving it all, and I’m sure you’ll get the boys up for a win against the All-Blacks. My only disappointment was not being able to watch you play at college (rumour was Reds told him he couldn’t), would have been interesting to see how much that would have improved the Emmanuel team way back then.

  • muffy

Jeeezuz….I’m tearing up and I don’t even know him (personally). But its one of those things where you see someone so regularly you think that you do….and if you see the bloke in the street you would say hey Sharpie and expect a hey muffy back.

Good luck Sharpie, you don’t know it, but you are one of my mates….

    • Jimmy

Mate I’ve seen him in the “street” a few times. It’s best not to make eye contact as your will hurt you neck.

  • Deborah Norton

Sure you can’t do another season? Wallabies need your tenacity and guidance.

  • H and Faysey

Congratulation, well done Sharpie. Thanks for the memories. You are a true champion. It has been an honour to know you, and to witness your success. “Let the future begin”!!!!!

  • Ryan

    legend

  • Drop kick

You’re having a magnificent end to a magnificent career. Thanks for the memories, you won’t be forgotten.

  • Patrick

Keep going mate we know we need you! Can you be off-field captain or something like that at least?

Congratulations and thanks for the memories, you’ve been a true champion; as they’ve all said you just keep getting better.

  • jollyswagman

What to say to a legend like Sharpie?…..

Sharpie, you are the kind of bloke that makes me proud to be Australian.

  • nufz

thanks and best of luck off the paddock.
