Everyone’s been wanging on about how much impact the youth of this Australian team made in the impressive win over South Africa on Saturday. Below are a few clips of two guys who I believed were at the centre of that impact: TPN and Bam Bam, aged 24 and 21 respectively.

Taffy was only on the field for 33 minutes and made just 3 tackles – but what corkers they were! I’m not sure I’ve seen anyone put 3 tackles like that together in the same match, let alone in just over 30 minutes. Often people talk about the impact one big hit can make on a teams spirits – but these three during this vital opening phase were damn near the reason the Wallabies won the match.

Many of us had come to wonder what was going on with David Pocock. He had a fantastic S14 but simply wasn’t getting the impact as a sub on the international stage. On Saturday however, he stepped up and took his chance, making more tackles (13) than anyone else on the paddock. As you can see, he was also ever-present at the breakdown and a key reason why the Wallabies were finally successful in this area.

Have they both done enough to cement starting positions for the forseable future?

    TPN was awesome.

The Work by Bam Bam at 2:06 on that video, That tackle was 60 minutes into the game and he covered well over twice the distance fourie had to and he makes a dominate tackle, totally disrupting their ball.

I think these guys were indicative of the increased enthusiasm of the entire team. I just hope it isn’t a one off and they can clean up the blacks and start to believe they can beat anyone.

Another area TPN did well (with his jumpers/lifters) was in the lineouts (bar one or two after he busted his ribs).

He also showed some real toughness in his scrummaging. Even after busting a rib, the Aussie scrum still dominated. Benn Robinson did bloody well, but no LH can be as devastating without assistance from his hooker.

The only recent player i could probably compare TPN efforts to are Jerry Collins.

Those sorts of hits add a real hard edge to our pack.

Completely agreed, James. A tackle every 11 minutes is just fine if they’re like this.

Anyway, speaking of JC and TPN great stuff:

From the same game, phenomenal workrate from Pocock:

Brilliant again Gagger & I have to agree that TPN set the tone for that match, it’s a shame he’s done his ribs as I can’t see him playing in Wellington.

Pocock is quality he’s not really an off the bench impact sought of player so it’s no suprise that is run on debut in the Tri-nations was his best game to date.

He’s proven that he’s the best tackler in the super 14 & he backed that up last saturday.

  • Joe Blow

The other player who was particularly damaging at the tackle was AAC.

He gave Gouger the big ‘welcome on’ the first time Gouger got the ball.

Not sure if these blokes will win in Wellington or not, but they are a chance and they will take the field with confidence.
