If you’re sick of seeing grubber kicks from the Wallabies, close your browser now.

Earlier today I was looking for some footage for another video when I came across this gem from Kurtley Beale in 2010.

At least the 2012 grubber kicks aren’t as bad as this one!

I don’t know what hurts more, the grubbers or agreeing with Phil Kearns

    • Guy

Kearns said at 0.08 secs, and I quote; “Ohhh, Noooo, what”… and then nothing else.

Is there an extra HR mis-typed into your name?

It’s like they’ve been watching too much Mungo-League whereby the 5th tackle quite often results in a bomb or grubber kick as they are out of the limited phases they get – no excuse in Union though, where they should be building pressure through phase play like the Darkness and waiting for the crack to appear in defence.

Fine them for grubber kicking inside the attacking 22. In fact, fine them for grubber kicks full stop. I noticed QC struggled quite a lot to even get touch with kicks – this is an area we are really bad at, so here’s an idea…… don’t kick outside the 22, run it. When inside the 22, kick for the stands – sacrifice a bit of distance to make sure the bloody thing goes out!

My thoughts exactly on the Rugby League comparison.

The difference seems to be that in League that fast player on the wing knows when it’s on. It looks planned & often actually works. ;)

Compare that to KB’s little effort. Did we have a jet shoe player out wide accelerating at precisely the right time? Did our outside player even contemplate KB’s grubber? Did it ever look like working? :(

  • Ooaahh

In answer to the question. The iPad came out! Seriously though, that’s a shocker.

Takes the cake. Could have gone himself. Hope he was pulled straight away…

Kurtley and Barnes will always want to kick before they pass/run.

  • Joe Blow

He just needs to be told to remove the grubber from his repertoire completely for now.
    HOLD ON TO THE PILL!!!
SebV I think you are right with Barnes.
When KB is fit and in form he will generally have a crack if it is half on. What he needs to learn is to take the ball into contact and recycle rather than give possession away when there is nothing on.
They cannot expect to score from every phase.

I know I should have listened to your warning. Gits should have done what Tiquiri did to Sam Norton-Knight which was a HUGE push in the back.

In Beale’s defense he did have a great bomb regather, double grubber to almost score against Wales. That’s the kurtley I miss.

Kafe made some interesting comments on the Rugby Club tonight about the kicking being so often the default ‘go to’ strategy.

Asked why the Wallabies do so much kicking he said “you play like you train’ or words to that effect. And he added that it’s been part of Robbie’s method for years to end each session with some touch footy and general mucking about with such things as chips & grubbers.

Seems the fun bit at the end of the session is the main thing to stick in some players heads. Clearly then Robbie needs to change what he is doing.

More worrying for me is that IF Kafe could spot that from a ‘one off’ casual observation of Wallaby training session, why couldn’t any of the coaches or senior players spot it?

Did anyone hear Kafe last night? Dont always agree with him but when he points out that you play what you practice it makes sense.

His point being that when you watch the backs train they regularly play touch and put in that grubber on the 5th. Keep doing that over and over again in training and guess what happens on the field.

Simple then! NO MORE F’ING GRUBBERS ANY TIME, ANYWHERE! But then Deans could never state anything so clearly.

I have been an avid reading of G&GR for a few years now and have never posted before.
Watching this video – Kurtley is up against a prop, one on one with O’Driscoll marking Giteau. That should be Kurtley’s bread and butter – he should be salivating to take him on.
Just look at the relief on the prop’s face at 00.11s of the video. Says it all.

I just watched an old tribute of Kurtleys. Seen it before, but never noticed the amount of kicks/grubbers that make up his game. It’s an inherent part of his rugby make-up, and if you watch his school highlights, it’s the same. Hmm

    • BloodRed

When he “came onto the scene” at the Tahs his first video highlight was a chip and regather that was followed by the sound of Kearns making his trousers sticky and every other Tah-centric commentator applauded it. It’s been chip kicks ever since when he needs to make things happen and that’s why he is not an option at 10 for the Wallabies.

That was a massive brain explosion

I have personally never really understood all the excitement about Kurtley.

I see his skills every now and again are something worth being excited about, but his mistakes (bad decisions) far outweigh the good. I wouldn’t have him on my team.

Thanks for the re-post. I had missed this on “Australia’s Funniest Home Videos”.

Can we put a “Pay That” tag directly below the video? The video itself deserves it.
