What’s missing in this video?

No GravatarHere are the four try scoring opportunities fro Australia from the last Rugby Championship match between the Wallabies and Pumas at Skilled Park.

In each section of play, what’s missing? (there’s a hint in the latest podcast)

Reveal what’s missing…

How many “re-set plays” did you see from Phipps at halfback?

Answer – none!

It may not have always been pretty – but it was fast, so it worked!

The ball didn’t hit someones foot?

  • MaxT

One thing I noticed in the early sections was the lack of runners coming back against the grain (or even straightening). Everyone was running sideways and stealing space.

    A hint: it’s a positive!

    • The Fridge

      Kicks

  • horror-tahs

Richie McCaw illegally slowing the ball down?

  • rugbysmartarse

    James O’Conner?

    • rugbysmartarse

Actual answer – Meerkatting from the halfback

  • Blinky Bill of Bellingen

Straight attacks with a nice dob of off load on the side of the plate?

  • Doctor D

What’s missing? a Flyhalf that doesn’t know how to direct traffic. Look at all the tries (and non tries) and see the value Cooper brings to the role.

You will *never* see Barnes play like that.

    • BloodRed

Very fair point and all too true. For ever “howler” he had he created much more and when his team mates got in on the act and gave him some options the Wallabies looked a different team.

Barnes created the play with a timing & space angled hit that gave the Wallabies shape when they were losing it due to consecutive phases broken play & lead straight into the scoring situation that quickly lead to the McCabe try against a Puma’s defence form basically shot on it’s own goal line.

Barnes overlapping on the Sharpey ‘should have been try’ from the Cooper pass, was in perfect enough timing & lines with that whole play’s scoring look – a timing and backline positional line’s attack, up-setting a defensive line’s co-ordination and then cutting through it’s gap.

i.e. the gap was created just before hitting the line, not at the line or due to simply numbers from phase build ups.

Have you never heard of comas, fullstops or paragraphs or even making sense?

  • bill

    slow ball from the ruck.

  • Nipper

I also noticed some urgency in their realignment, so there were actually attackers running onto the ball with pace when Phipps played that quick ball. Bob Dwyer will be pleased.

I have to admit, I thought Phipps would be a big bust, but he did bring some good things to the side (made some errors too, but we’ll stay positive!).

  • BloodRed

About 10 points from the 2 bombed tries

  • rossco

I dont know the answer but what I do know is that when the Wallabies throw the ball wide and fracture the opposition they go somewhere and it is good to watch.

When they place this bullshit smash it up the middle reminiscent of England circa 2001 they score no tries and they go nowhere, dropping more supporters each week

  • Mike Mac

Quick ball, no kicking, flat passes from 5/8.

    • Mike Mac

Sorry, I mean, those things are what’s happening, and they have been missing in previous games

  • Tangawizi

It’s a clip from the Gold Coast but I can not see a single girl in a bikini?

  • johnny-boy

Timani bludging in the backline ? Or Australian rugby supporters marvelling at Coopers organisation and setting up of tries and thinking, we really should go back to boretah rugby with Barnes or pick an overweight, mentally fragile inexperienced 10 for the next game ……

  • kasi

They all dont give a fend when needed as the defenders in all the cases all had chances to knock the ball out of their hands! Theres no fight ande wanto be agressive….a very needed aspect of attack and protecting the ball……cmon wallabies…..bring back the wallabies of old…..smart and always trying things and running more often than not God bless :D

    About 2 seconds of music.

  • ooaahh

going out on a limb and going to say ‘we are not waiting’ at the breakdown. Positive is fast play.

  • NEW REBEL

What’s missing? Slow ball and chip kicks.

  • Dirty Socks

    Box kicking

  • HardenUp

Do my eyes deceive me or is Barnes being a crash ball runner in this clip?

  • Mickeyb

    KICKING BABY KICKING!!

4 TRIES AND NOT A PUNT IN SIGHT!!

  • Fletch

    jaw dropping cheerleaders

  • Fletch

    highkicking

  • mad italian flyhalf

I know what’s gonna miss in the next couple of season.

The flyhalf that created 3 out of 4 of those try occasions.

He’s infantile, he’s stupid, maybe egoed and selfish whatever… but with him the Wallabies wins (much) more than without.
35% without Cooper, 69% with Cooper.

  • Clive

    “egg hatching” ala Genia

  • bludge

i dont see the toxic environment very clearly?

  • nufz

Whats missing? Confused and frustrated players kicking away chances..

Whats not missing? Rugby players playing rugby and looking like they enjoy it.

  • USARugger

Well for one Barnes’ right food is good and clear of the ball in all those clips!!

My money would be on Genia’s crow-step missing (as is Genia). It’s good and nice when he uses it to draw in an extra defender and then squirt through or put someone else over but when he does it out of every single ruck it just cuts down on the time QC has to work with the ball before a blitz defense hits him.

On another note, this compressed format makes it really obvious how much work QC really does to put the Wobbs into attacking positions and create overlaps/space for his strikers. His reading and passing game are seriously still pretty amazing.

  • Skippy

This isn’t answering the question but just a seperate point. I’m a big McCabe fan… in terms of what he does bring to a side however if you look at the second attacking play from the lineout… he had to turn his back to the defence so he can throw a cut out in the backline off his ‘strongest’ hand.

Sorry… but you can’t be a world class number 12 and not be able to distribute off both hands. First and foremost what you do is throw out the timing of the support players but at the top level the most significant effect will be on the defence who once they see you turn your back can start to drift off you as your no longer a threat to the defensive line with your back turned. The result being… the defence adjusts and moves onto the receivers.

Yes McCabe offers so much and I think he should be moved to 13 and compete with AAC for the 13 jersey and we need either Barnes/Taps or hopefully JOC to be a long term 12 because when Australia plays their best rugby it’s with a 12 who can distribute and 13 who can get over the advantage line… think Gits/Horan/Mortlock etc.

    • johnny-boy

And this is apparently the level of skill Australian backs are meant to aspire too. It’s almost frightening. I can just see Bob Dwyer having an apoplectic fit

  • canuckruck

Aimless kicks are missing. And that is a good thing.

  • AJ

They’re missing the ref’s incessant whistle.
A nice long advantage without pulling the play up…what it is supposed to be all about!

  • Ben

Not sure if anyone has noticed this yet.. but the only reason Phibbs makes the break at the end is because Taff trips the argie from the ruck.
