This one is for you!

“Congratulations to Year 12 TAS boys, Ben Hamparsum & Nick Makeham on making GPS Rugby selections. Ben will start as loose head prop for GPS White team when they play GPS Blue on Tuesday at St Joseph's College. Nick is on the bench for GPS Blue. Ben & Nick have settled into training today at Scots after the announcement of teams last night. Well done boys, enjoy the week of GPS rugby ahead.”

Congrats to TAS on their win over High on Saturday

Two of those New boys playing 1sts and another one playing 2nds. Think how good the 16As would be if they were still in it.
Hopefully, they will reunite in the 1st XV for 2020.2020 will be significant year for both Newington and Kings, as it is the 150th anniversary of the first game of Schoolboy Rugby played in Australia, starting with these two schools. One would hope that both schools celebrate this event with some importance, together with Australian Rugby. Last time in 1970, I believe each team player was given a medallion.

Maybe a televised match would be an appriorate means of recognising the event. Particularly, if both schools are fielding strong 1st XVs based on their performances over last couple of years.

That's super special, hope a big deal is made of it, eg TV coverage, ARU involvement etc.
Here's an ideal chance for the ARU to promote the game.:D

Wow .... I see Darcy Clifton didn't make the President's A team ... I would hate to see how good the centres are that are better than him!

One question ... for the Newington supporters out there ... how is that you guys start off so dominant in 13s and 14s ... and then come the Opens things aren't the same

Take for example this year's Opens Cohort .... unless I am mistaken they were the team to beat in the 13s and 14s ... what has changed? I think Wilson the star 10 has moved to Auggies ... but other than that ... I don't know the individuals other than Bell who was part of the strong 13A and 14As.

Is it a student retention issue , kids dropping out, or is the coaching the issue?

Joeys on the other hand ... I thought they were weak in this cohort ... yet 6 years on, and despite a few trial losses, they are a decent chance in 2018

I was fortunate enough to be at the Centenary Match at Kings in 1970, as many of my forebears attended Newington.

The guest speaker was an Old Newingtonian of some years, who stressed the importance of playing Rugby after leaving school. He and many of his contemporaries had returned from WWI in bad shape, and had greatly benefited both physically and mentally from getting back on the Rugby field. A speech that left a lasting impression on me as a mere 12 year old.

Agree. Hard to comprehend. That said, i think the Pres A 12 - Will Penisini from Kings, has played some 1sts and 13 - Kaeo Weekes from New is definitely in their 1sts. Check out Weekes try in steppa video above. Clifton is playing 2s at Scots.

Not saying Kaeo and Will dont deserve their spots. They totally do. But its still hard to comprehend someone as good as Darcy making 2s. He would surely make 1s in most other years. Is a testament to quality of Kaeo and Will and evidence of great strength in GPS midfiled in this age group.

Good question and from experience I can answer that a lot of factors do change (disregarding which schools have specific rugby programmes). That age group is always unpredictable as a guide to the future. Boys can have size and weight advantages early on but then come back to the pack. That age group also often has a mix of Year 7 with young year 8 boys as well which changes as they get older and the original teams divide as the year 8 boys hit opens earlier. I do think kids dropping out ( usually to play another sport) is huge. You only have to see the change from rugby v soccer team numbers over the years at most schools (along with many more sports on offer) to realise young kids change sports more than before.

I’d rate the centres they have picked ahead of him more highly as well as Koula who plays centre for New but has been picked at 11 for Presidents A’s. There are a lot of very good centres in this age group; the Joeys centres were deadly with ball in hand on the weekend and Austin (picked at 14 for Presidents B’s) plays strongly at 13 for Shore 1st 15. Penisini and Weekes are outstanding though.

Recognising there are no "under-age premierships", listed below is a chronology of how the AAGPS rugby Class of 2018 has performed over the years i.e. finishing top of the table:

2013 - Newington
2014 - Joeys
2015 - Kings
2016 - Joeys

I would not hold your breath for a Kings Riverview report. Neither school has interested enough GnG followers to do a report, despite me asking on numerous occasions.

Looks like we could have a possible candidate though Rod. ;)
Someone who was at the game it would appear.

I heard writers from other schools had to write the Kings and View previews in the season preview - link below, hence the funky (and funny) author's name.

Would be a good time for some actual supporters to step up.
