Australian Bid for 2027 World Cup

I would think they might try a game in Tassie? Didn't one get played there in 2003? Just think one of the beauties of having a WC is chance to take game to the places where rugby struggles to have a footprint, and let the local populatin adopt a team.

maybe drop AAMI Park for the G and hold the final there to pack as many people in as possible
The G sux.

I mean it's good for cricket (and that other game) but for a RWC final? No.

Anyway, mustn't count chickens. I'm booking tickets to Qatar as we speak.

Adelaide has the advantage of being fairly narrow where the MCG and Perth are roundish. Makes for a better rugby ground on that basis.

By 2027 I'll be 51, both kids will be finished school (maybe one in Uni at that point) and I would love to take in a national tour, trying to get to every stadium.

Wife can come if she wants, I guess...

They did, but world rugby wants only 8-10 stadiums used, so it's unlikely Tasmania will make much sense as one of those. Much more value in that approach in Adelaide or one of the regional centres.

True, but I also think it is just a better stadium.

A few exceptions aside, we don't have good designs in Australia. I maintain a particular disdain for Homebush - very expensive, decidedly mediocre.

Make no mistake – Australia believes it is head and shoulders the most suitable country to host the 2027 Rugby World Cup and has shown an unwavering commitment to making sure it happens.
In times like these, RA will learn who its real friends are and has rolled out the red carpet to bring the World Cup to Australia for the first time since 2003.

It has emerged the USA might put its name in the ring for 2027, while there is speculation others could be late wildcards, as Phil Kearns, executive director of the World Cup bid, explained to theHerald.
“We should know by the end of the month who our enemies are,” Kearns said.

“We’ve heard Russia but we think they could be precluded because of their doping ban. We’ve heard Qatar. We’ve heard USA. We’ve heard the Poms [England] might be a sneaky [chance] for 2027 but I doubt it. The South Americans are saying they’re not interested but they could go for 2031. They definitely won’t go for 2027.”

There is a long way to go but even so, RA chairman Hamish McLennan was bullish about Australia’s chances against a potential USA bid.
“I think their Achilles heel is they don’t really have a viable team and [a Union] that has just come out of bankruptcy,” McLennan told theHerald. “There is no point hosting if you can’t field a proper national team.”

Qatar??? Surely this cannot be serious?

They don't appear to be in the top 105 teams in the world rankings so if they were to host it may be a good bet that they would be the worst ever team in a World Cup. I doubt they have a women's program so surely this would also exclude them from applying.

I am just wondering, I actually think Aus is certainty for it at moment, and partly because rest of world knows rugby here needs a hand, but would certainly cause some deep thinking if USA put in a bid.
I still think Aus would get it, but if say NZR signed with Silver Lake, would they not be tempted that it would be worth a lot of money if it went to America? The whole pitch fron Silver Lake is to make the money in US and Asia market, so monetary wise would be better for them to have it there? I not suggesting that, nor saying they would vote for it, but does throw up a nice conundrum.

I do think USA will go fir '31 cup anyway.

I think 6 weeks holiday in 2027 could well be on the cards.

Then I'm hopeful of South America 2031 and doing the same there.

My understanding was USA was more likely to pitch for 2031, which gives them a bit more lead time to establish the game over there. If that turns out to be the case that probably makes everyone's decision a lot easier.

I was of the understanding that SAANZA voted as a block, I thought that was part of the reason Argentina pulled out for 2027.

I can't see Russia getting it, wouldn't be a great look for rugby.

USA rugby are bankrupt so couldn't put it together.

Qatar would make sense from their point of view as they have all the stadia for the football world cup. Not from a rugby point of view, unless they promise a long term investment in rugby.

.

I don't believe so. I heard the reason the Argies pulled out was that they don't have the cash to host it effectively. We were shit scared of them as Gus Pichot has so much clout that there was a view they would win purely because of his popularity with World Rugby delegates.

So, what’s the bid going to cost RA?
bit of a worry that we are going to win it in a walkover.
seems like the risk/reward pendulum is swinging the wrong way.
