Totally at risk of getting left behind here. No smartphone. No clue. No real inclination to get with the programme either. Just so much stuff that's second nature to humans that I've never even bothered trying and don't give a shit about even though I know I goddamn should.

- Never "downloaded an app"
- Never listened to "spotify"
- Never visited "instagram"
- Never visited "TikTok":- barely even know what that one is.

Let's Discuss Technology, The Future, And You.

Downloaded an app or three but, yeah, Spotify etc are unknown territory for me. Work is becoming increasingly tech-based, partly 'cos our POS software is still DOS-based & will at some point cease to function so they're progressively moving everything over to what are essentially apps that talk to each other. But other than that, my trusty iPad & newish smartphone I still don't know how to work properly, I'm pretty much a trog.

So it's helped bring in revenue for you? All I hear/read is that it provides meagre income to most musicians, writers, producers etc.
No. I just love music lol

But yeah - unless your music is being played in the hundreds of thousands, it’s not gonna make you a lot of money.

My band has one song on Spotify. Raked in about $20 in 2yrs. The retirement plan is not looking great bahahaha

Now I'm wondering what % of the smartphone zombies pushing buttons on their devices and staring intently at the stupid little things aren't just actually thinking "how the fuck do I work this thing anyway....."

Singing for your supper

I remember this was the discussion 20 years ago when Napster was doing its thing: musicians are going to have to make their money through touring again.

I think it's age-related: anyone born this millennium knows what they're doing pretty much 99% of the time, boomers/ GenX are mostly winging or faking it.

Strangely enough I don't really relate social media to the future. The polemic stupidity in extremis drives no future of interest.

I have, as a boomer, returned to study due to me interest in the future. Completed a Diploma in Science a year ago and now doing a double major in Biotech and Biodiversity. I tried math and physics but unfortunately my head imploded at the point I entered the maths of n-dimensional space and trying to peel out real world spatials from beyond 3-d. It's beyond high school maths, but not by much.

I've got a Technics SL-D2 that my Dad bought in 1980 and gave to me several years ago. Still works perfectly. It goes into a NAD PP-1 phono preamp.

I'm an old millennial who has the endless fortune of growing up without computers or the internet, but having them arrive at an early enough age that i'm a native to them. Ask me how they work and you'll get a blank stare, but i'm pretty comfortable using them.

It's funny though. Before I made the leap to smartphones I was so dismissive of them, promised i'd have no need for them. Now, almost 15 years on, I dream of long periods physically disconnected from my phone and the internet.

If you're still a committed luddite, stay that way.
