An interesting game. I felt the Kings Pack was the Dominate factor in this game. In the first half Newington, struggled to get their hands on the Ball. Additionally, sloppy defence allowed the second and third tries to be scored against Newington. Kings really had a tradesman like win, although these tries came from their winger. It was their grinding dominance in achieving possession that ensured their win. Newington for their part will need to ensure greater possession and effective use of their possession. Particularly, against team like Kings who clearly can dominate possession.

Nevertheless, there were pleasing signs for Newington. Their tries came from moving the ball in hand, with good support play. The backs showed a turn of pace, that made numerous inroads into the Kings defence. As all three of tries came from their ability, to attack and penetrate through their backline. At present their backs are their most lethal part of their play. With their Number 9, Billy Dickerson a clear stand out player.

I feel New will enter the GPS season underprepared, they really need a much longer preseason to "Iron out their faults, particularly, in forward dominance. Their backs despite criticism on this site, have shown they are "work in progress" and show real promise.

A very frustrating game for Newington but i did feel that they significantly improved from the last couple of losses. The defense definitely needs improvements on the wings. One important thing to note is that Siteni Takuamo, Drew Williams, Jaydon Villiamu, and Oliver Townsend were absent from this game. With key players missing I think Newington put on a solid performance against Kings.

3rd XV Round 2 Report

Another fascinating round in the 3rd XV competition today which leaves Shore, Kings and Joeys undefeated.

Shore 18 d Riverview 15
An amazing game where Shore came back from 12-5 down to win with a penalty goal from 40m right on the bell. It was a reversal of fortune for Riverview who did exactly the same thing to Scots last week. Shore remain undefeated after two rounds and will be thrilled with this win at Northbridge.

Kings 22 d TAS 17
It was back-to-back wins for Kings overcoming the visiting TAS 1st XV by 5 points. It means TAS have had two losses in the opening two rounds and will struggle to win the shield from here, but are certain to cause teams trouble in the remaining rounds. (I note that TAS has already played their Round 6 game against High which they won easily.) Kings are looking the goods this year and will be tough to beat down the stretch.

Joeys 64 def High 0
As predicted it was an easy win for Joeys at Hunters Hill. High 1st XV trailed 0-40 at half time and put up an improved effort in the second half but still a big win to a confident Joeys side who remain undefeated after two rounds.

Grammar 15 def Scots 0
Another tight game which was 0-0 at half time, but Grammar moved away in the second half to record their first win and give themselves some chance of retaining the Col Windon shield. Scots, like TAS and High, have now had two losses on the trot in the opening two rounds and will be disappointed after good early trial form.

Hello dusk

Good to hear the team will be strengthened with the return of four key players. The gaps that emerged in the New Defence with the scoring of tries 2 & 3, are not an incurable fault. Its a tactical problem, with the team needing to reline very quickly in defence and reading the game, in how shut down not an opponent's attack, but in their play, that leads up to an opponent's attack. This means placing pressure on their inside backs and preventing them to initiate play before, it is given to the wings. However, Easier said than done.

Another facet of improved play for Newington, is a greater dominance in lose play, particularly, at the breakdown. Again, without the ball Kings wouldn't been able to attack. The Kings attack was very effective, but I feel the New attack was more stylish, more nimble and showed real pace. Particularly, on an Individual level, our New players looked, really dangerous. The problem here for Newington, was an absence of a secure platform, from which to launch and maintain the attack. Kings had such a secure platform and won the game accordingly. So securing, recycling and playing with the ball in hand,needs to be a priority for New. The inability by New in this Game to master these tasks, allowed the Initiative to past to Kings, who to their credit,took full advantage of their opportunities.

I think they are cousins. One is son of Micheal and the other the son of Peter. Not sure which is which. When Peter was at New I did athletics with him, he ran one age group up. I’m presuming a good amount of their skills (hand eye coordination, athleticism etc) come from genetics. No doubt the Fittler boy from Scots is an apple which didn’t fall far from the tree either.

The New no 9 is Billy Dickens. 3 year 1sts player and before that played an age group up. Always gets good clean ball out to the back line. Nice humble kid too. No relation just been watching him and New closely for the last few years.

Very good day of rugby at Northbridge as the Silvertails from North Sydney hosted the Battlers from Bellevue Hill........... I believe Shore won the 13as, Scots the 14as, 15as, 16as ........ the seconds was a very close run affair with Shore up by 2-3 tries early and Scots coming back after the oranges to go down i think 26-24 or similar, the Scots boys wont be happy but full credit to the Shoremen.

The Firsts was a good game Scots consistently looked like they may run away with it but the Shoremen would have none of it .......... the Score was always in favour of the battlers but Shore was consistanly at their heels......... a point in the second half came when i think the score was 29-24 Scots and it was all on.......... Scots did not play like a team today that could close out a tight game in the GPS season proper, more of the same basic handling mistakes and fancy moves not working ........... they looked over coached and consistently got white line fever in numerous incursions into Shores 22, they failed to use there significant size and pace advantage out wide ......... twice the Scots winger got the ball early in the first half twice he scored.

There was so much kicking from both sides it could have been one of those games with a round ball, I hope Marcus Blackburn was not watching on Clutch............ one can only imagine how he would have coached with such a talented, large and quick back line ...........

Best on field for both teams was Shore 1 ......... incredible was everywhere, Shore 7 (playing at 8) was an absolute jack in the box reminded me of Charlie Smith from Scots a few years ago.......... Shore 12 was in everything in attack and defence, hard to pick out best from Scots everyone did the job but nobody really stood out............

Best news for all of us here is that it appears Shore Rugby is making a very healthy comeback, i hope these boys can break the drought this year they are very capable of doing so, and it is great thing for the longevity of GPS rugby.......

I really felt he was a stand out player. for Newington against Kings. He is big for a halfback, but strong and provided quality ball, when New did attack. He also scored an excellent try.Very much a GPS rep Player.
Dusk, is he the son of the Rugby Master at Newington.

I’m an old boy from joeys, usually support the boys after a win but today I feel as if it was a cheap win. Joeys boys consistently tackling high with little to no consequences, this isn’t how footy should be played. Few other things in the game I didn’t really like aswell.

Would like to hear thoughts from others who watched the game aswel.

Overall happy with the win but could’ve went either ways, keen for the matchup later in the season.

I don't believe he is the son of the rugby master. He is however the brother to former Newington firsts player Max Dickens

Dusk please stop trying to take the micky.
As a Year 12 student at Stanmore you should know better. The 9 is the nephew of the Director of Sports for Newington.
