14A's score: Scots 64-0 Newington
Hello Propsarespeedy
Yes, its score that the Scots 14As should be proud of, but as we have is discussed, these success are fleeting. Puberty, the arrival of our Pacific Islander Intake, in the coming years, will most likely alternate the balance between the teams. But I hope your 14As, enjoyed their win
The 13As, score would be much appreciated. I could't find it as yet ins tram

it wasn't just him talking it was him yelling at the ref - ref had to show who was in charge!!
Yes, he was yelling that he had the ball and the ref ignored him. Ref blew his whistle and binned him. no discussion. An emotional and not rational response to the incident. The Joeys 1 went and explained the issue. REFS DO NOT GET EVERYTHING CORRECT. This was an error. The decision was poor in his opinion as the ref denied a defenders right to the ball when he was not the tackler and had dominate position, supporting his own weight and hands on the ball. Cherry on top was the Shore 13 who came in from the side and took him away. No wonder the player yelled something! Anyway, didn't have an effect on the result.

Although almost the same situation at joeys a few weeks ago, when a ref made the wrong decision a player argued it and got red carded for arguing the decision...... you judged his character a few weeks ago but are sticking up for this joeys boy?

Hi All

Firstly, Great game of Rugby played between Scots and Newington. Both teams played with spirit and committment and the result could have gone either way although imo Newington were the better team throughout the whole game.

Before I get to the game, I would like to thank the Scots parents and especially the Scots Old Boys on the Balcony form their hospitality. Being told at the BBQ " good luck, you'll need it " and the booing and shouting at the end from the majority of OB's on the Balcony before the last New conversion, makes me even happier to leave BH with a win ( and even sweeter when it's by 1 point at the death ). So, again, Thank you. It was a memorable win for the great unwashed and a very loud and proud car trip home to our single story fibro shack.

I have to start by eating my words. The coach pulled off a master stroke by having J.McGregor at 15 and D.Wright at 10. McGregor was man of the match at 15. His rugby smarts came through esp in the 2nd half. His Decision making against the wind ( kicks to the corners and taking on the line when he had to) was spot on. His Try in the cnr was exceptional. So well done to the caoches.

New Front row. Didn't stop all day. No subs and out on their feet. Big T.Jorgensen trucked it up all day. kept the d close to ruck tight and finished by playing a little bit of halfback near the end. Has really worked on his fitness and well deserved GPS selection. No.3 T.Maclean was unsighted all game. That's because he was in the bottom of everything. Played hard and made his tackles. Lipina Ata GPS 1STS No2. Great game and equal man of the match. Scored a great meat pie in the first half after a patient build up and trucked it up nice and straight. His line out throws have improved and held up the scrum well. Front row 8/10. Has improved and will need to match the Joeys front row in RD2.

New 4,5 played well. J.Veiru trucked it up and made his tackles. L.Bertrams oneof the most improved players. Line outs were good considering Scots tall timber. The last 4min he won the line outs when the game was on the line so well done. Keep up the hard work.

Back row. No6 J.Viliamu GPS 1STS No.6, equal mom. Strong runs, bled for the team and linked well with the backs. No7. M.Hyslop again another unsighted player who did his job and did it well. No8 J.Vaálotu. Trucked it up and made his tackles. Keep working.

No.9 B.Dickens. directed play well, took the right options, didn't overplay his hand and kept the talk up till the end. passes were mainly accurate and unlucky not to be 1,2 GPS team. First game back No.10 D. Wright combined with Dickens and outside backs well. Kicked well, tackled well and let the outside backs do their jobs. unselfish and played smart.

No.12 E.Barton, ran strong and tackled well. WOULD have been a good contest against Cummins. No.13 J McLean played with freedom and was given too much room to move. Was not tested by the Scots backs much, but did enough to shut them down. Plyed well.

11 W.Quinn solid and made his tackles. Took the right options and linked well with 13,14,15. No14. S.Taukamo. Great game. Goal Kicked well under presuure, ran well, tackled and did not over play his hand. If he can grubber kick down the sidelines/corners ala 15 instead of risky chip kicks, he'd be better off. Overall, unlucky to not make GPS 1's.

15 J.McGregor. Schooled Scots much heralded 15 on how to play a smart, tactical game. Ran, kicked and tackled great. Well done.

Overall, New's game plan was well though out and pretty well executed. Used the wind well in the first half to take the points. Played patient footy. Forwards did the job in the middle and backs used their flair. Set pieces had improved and did enough in the scrum against a bigger opponent and line outs to win enough ball. Break downs were pretty even. 2nd half was owned by New's 15 who played it down Scots corner. 27-21 with 4 mins to go. Game on the line. This New team did not panic. Kicked off deep. Closed Scots down in their East corner, won the line outs that mattered and used the battering rams to punch up steadily and patiently until Scots cracked and went in on side of the posts. Pressure kick to win and ball sailed over the black dot towards the Scots Old Boys. The bagpipes were silenced !!!

Thought Scots could have thrown the ball more and used 11,14 and 15. Did not take on the line until the end. Forwards played ok. 4 was very good. 6 was dirty but everywhere. They had a few passengers in the forwards ( won't single anyone out ) but didn't use their beef enough up the middle.

Great win. Good start. Enjoy the holidays. play the rep games. Come out healthy and get ready for Rd2 at HH.

New will gain a lot of confidence out of the win but can improve in some areas but overall, hats off to the coaches and players.

New 2nds lost. 2 tries all but they were not beaten by talent. they beat themselves by not playing smart with the wind. This team can play better.

New 16A's had a very good win and went away with it in the 2nd half. New 10 and 15 are outstanding. Few big boppers in the forward helps.

Enjoy the holidays and see you in 3 weeks

Here is a list of the boys who made the GPS u16 squad. Not sure about other schools but I believe Harry Gianoutsos and Max Soepono from Scots are also a part of the squad.
So they chose everybody? That will make preparing a team easy. CAS took 25 boys, solid mix from all schools and a number playing 1sts.

Such a shame this happens. From my experience with Scots this is a recent trend with parents and old boys in the past normally well behaved and gracious. Always good to beat Scots at the death. Joeys have made this a specialty since 1981 when a field goal on the bell decided the premiership. We walked back to the College that night and had ice-cream for dessert (rare treat)

As a current referee in and about the traps, I am well placed to provide an “insiders viewpoint” on how we treat - and react - to players giving back chat..

So here goes….

First and foremost, and this is important to note as this is either misunderstood, or simply unknown, is that you will not find any law in the Rugby law book that states that a captain - of any rugby team - has the right to speak to any referee about any decision that they make (or do not make) - under any circumstances.

We as referees give the captain of any rugby team the ‘privilege’ to query any decision we make. This is a long standing tradition within our game, and its our way (as referees) of acknowledging the captains role and position in his/ her team. And before any match during the team pre-game chats, we always ensure to say to captains that you may ask one question only (and at an opportune time too) and there will be no debate of any decision made. I always emphasise that its all about respectful interactions, and that the respect is to be shown and expected both ways.

Now during any game mistakes will be made – we know the players do them, and so do we refs – we are human, and as a referee during any game there is so much to view, check, analyse, interpret, decide, etc etc. Our roles as a ref is to make sure we minimise any mistakes we make, and learn from those that we (unfortunately) do.

Without having seen any of the incidents in this discussion, the facts are:
  • As a captain, there is always a right and wrong way to approach and talk to a referee,
  • If the ref has made a bad call – you need to just simply accept it – nothing can turn back the time and make it right,
  • As a captain, seek to understand the refs viewpoint when a decision appears to be a crook one – and at the appropriate time too.

There is nothing in the law book to say that you have to agree with every decision a referee makes, but what you cannot do is voice your displeasure at what you perceive to be are the wrong ones made.

As a general guide to how we as referees handle dissent:

  • Most of us refs used to play, so we ‘get it’. Frustrations do occur in every match (regardless of the grade) and this is a high collision sport we play. Only from experience do we know what to stamp on, and what to let go to the keeper...
  • If a player(s) has been asked to tone down their comments, but chooses not to, a PK usually fixes the issue.
  • If they are slow learners, then a YC is typically shown to the dissenter the next time he does so..
  • if we are directly sworn at by any player – it’s a red card and off you go…

The ref in the Shore v Joeys game typically does Shute Shield level matches, he is very good at what he does, and I am sure he has to deal with far more at that level than any GPS Schoolboy match.

Personally, I would wish players just simply get on with playing, and try to learn from any perceived crook decisions they are on the wrong side of.

And btw: has anyone ever seen any referee reverse his decision after being yelled at?
To date, I am yet to…

Props are People too

GPS plays 2 teams at the schools carnival next week. So 2 squads of 25. Everyone else has one squad. Still, agree it seems OTT to have 50% of the playing population making the rep teams.

This was a famous reversal by a referee. What is even better it happened agaisnt the All Blacks.

Thats not a reversal decision - the decision stayed with the same team - he modified the law book there; and just Romain being the typical balloon-head ref that he was (thank heavens he retired...)

Hi Joker

The Scots Old Boys were pretty bad. No one is perfect and I know you can get carried away, like running onto the field, Joeys vs Riverview, New vs View. But it's not a good look. Anyway, just makes it a lot sweeter. Play on !!

That's great that it didn't have an effect on the result, but it did in the trial when a Joeys coathanger wasn't binned after being warned by the referee which would have changed the result. Great to see your unbiased acknowledgement of this error but not the one a couple weeks ago.
